But despite the emperor’s massive size, it retracted its blade and swung again from a different angle, then again from another, each strike coming in rapid succession with a second between them.
Eduardo parried the first strike and deflected the second, despite the overwhelming force behind each blow.
After the last deflection, there was a brief opening as the Emperor retracted its sword to prepare another strike.
It was in that moment that Eduardo brought the Kirisame around in a clean horizontal slash as reddish aura extending outward in a crescent-shaped arc.
The arc slammed directly into the corner of the Emperor’s ribcage, striking the exact point where Lucien was positioned within the protective cage of bone.
The damage dealt left a crack on the ribcage and Emperor roared in what sounded like pain, then swung its blade down again with even greater force than before.
The sword struck the ground and sent up a massive cloud of dust and debris that obscured everything in a twenty-foot radius around the impact point.
When the dust began to settle, Eduardo was revealed standing on the flat edge of the Emperor’s blade itself, balanced perfectly on the surface while the weapon was still pressed against the ground.
Lucien’s eyes widened in shock.
Then the butler launched himself forward, running along the blade’s edge, sprinting up its length before stepping onto the Emperor’s massive forearm.
At a certain point along the forearm, Eduardo kicked off and propelled himself through the air directly toward the ribcage.
He drew his left fist back, reddish aura condensing around it, and then drove that fist forward into the ribcage with everything he had.
The impact was catastrophic.
The force behind the punch didn’t just strike the bone, it traveled through the ribcage, bypassing the protective structure and reaching Lucien directly within.
Lucien was blown out of the ribcage, crashing hard on the ground. The summon itself, having taken such a devastating blow to its core structure, lost its balance.
The massive construct staggered backward and began to fall.
Lucien had just managed to raise his head from the ground, his vision swimming as he tried to orient himself after the impact.
And then he saw his own summon—all fifty feet falling backward toward him.
In that moment, his hand shot out, and he undid the summoning immediately. The Emperor dissolved into specks of bluish light just before its massive body would have crushed its summoner into paste.
Lucien barely had a moment to process what had just happened before a figure appeared directly in front of him.
Eduardo grabbed Lucien by the throat, lifting him off the ground with his right hand alone.
The summoner had blood by the side of his face, and his feet were several inches above the rubble as Eduardo held him suspended in the air.
The butler had his fangs fully visible as he spoke in a voice that sounded like a bestial growl.
"Where is it?" Eduardo demanded, his grip tightening slightly. "Where is the Nummus Absolutio?"
"Lucien!" Donovan’s eyes widened in alarm as he registered what was happening. An immediate surge of adrenaline flooded through him, and he turned his full attention toward the group of werewolves surrounding him.
One of the cousins had circled behind and locked both arms around Donovan’s neck from the rear, attempting to choke him into submission with a grip that tightened with each passing second.
Donovan’s hands shot up and grabbed the cousin’s forearms. In one explosive motion, he wrenched the werewolf off his back, slammed him violently into the ground with enough force to crater the earth beneath them, then flung the body away like a discarded ragdoll.
The cousin’s form hurtled through the air directly toward Percival and the other cousin, who had just recovered from being thrown back earlier and were charging forward again in a coordinated dash.
All three bodies collided in a tangle of limbs and momentum, crashing to the ground in a heap.
Donovan didn’t waste a second. He turned and launched himself toward where Eduardo had raised Lucien in his grip, his powerful legs propelling him through the distance in one desperate leap.
Lucien saw Donovan coming and his mouth opened as though to scream for him to stop—
But without even turning to face the incoming werewolf, Eduardo simply swung his left hand outward in a casual arc, the blade moving through the air with such clean precision.
The sword cut clean through Donovan’s neck while his body was still sailing toward them, severing his head from his shoulders in one effortless motion.
The headless corpse continued forward for another meter from sheer momentum before crumpling to the ground in a lifeless heap.
And the severed head bounced once against the ground and rolled to a stop several feet away.
"Tch." Lucien clicked his tongue in frustration as he found himself, face to face with the butler once more.
"Don’t make me ask you again," Eduardo said, his voice cold and devoid of any emotion. "Where is it?"
Lucien remained silent, his jaw clenched tight as he glared up at the butler m.
Eduardo sighed, then grabbed slammed him backward into the ground with enough force to drive the air from his lungs.
Then, he drove his blade downward through a non-vital section of Lucien’s torso, just below the ribs on his left side and continued pushing until the weapon buried itself completely into the earth beneath him.
Lucien’s scream filled the air as the steel pierced through his body tissues. His entire body convulsed in agony, his hands shaking violently as they reached up and tried desperately to grab hold of the sword that had been used to pin him down.
Eduardo stared down at him for a moment, with cold reddish eyes.
Then he vanished in a blur of motion, leaving Lucien nailed to the ground and writhing in pain. He had gone to take care of the rest.
