Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 699 - 698: Sorry

Lo Jun was now primarily teaching Yan Feifan using case studies.

He passed his knowledge to Yan Feifan through discussions and examinations of representative, typical, or special cases of neurological diseases and nerve damage he had accumulated throughout his career.

For one, this method was highly efficient, allowing a large amount of knowledge to be imparted in a limited amount of time.

Yan Feifan used his ability to simulate and reenact scenarios in his world of consciousness, allowing him to virtually experience the examination and treatment process for each case and thereby commit it to heart.

Another reason was the lack of time.

The time Yan Feifan had allocated for neurosurgery was almost completely hijacked by the intraspinal tumor puncture and injection procedures.

He didn’t have any extra time to shadow Lo Jun through actual neurosurgeries, learning through hands-on practice and observation.

Lo Jun had no other choice.

There were too many patients with spinal tumors flocking in from all over the country, and every day, people would show up trying to use their connections.

The two spinal tumor surgeries per week simply couldn’t be stopped.

However, Yan Feifan had already put the word out.

He had announced that since the new company—a joint venture by Baining Medical Technology, Baiyulan Medical Technology, and Shenlan Automation Research Institute—would be launching a surgical robot for intraspinal tumor procedures by the end of the year, he would stop accepting new patients in the new year.

As it stood, Lo Jun had already scheduled Yan Feifan’s surgeries at a rate of two per week all the way to the last week of December...

A little after twelve noon, Yan Feifan finished his morning studies and went to Staff Cafeteria No. 1 for lunch.

In truth, the small restaurant in the Little Red House had a much better dining atmosphere.

However, that restaurant primarily catered to the foreigners receiving treatment in the Little Red House and their families. The food was a sort of East-West fusion that didn’t quite suit Yan Feifan’s palate.

Yan Feifan got a meal, found an empty table with Duan Yu, and sat down. He had barely taken a few bites when he sensed someone sitting down beside him.

He looked up to see Li Yun from the relevant authorities. A rather lavish-looking meal sat on the table in front of her.

She took a bite of each dish, then shook her head. "Mr. Yan, this food looks decent, but the taste... it leaves much to be desired."

Yan Feifan chuckled. "It’s cafeteria food made in huge pots for hundreds of people. As long as it’s clean, hygienic, and edible, that’s good enough. You can’t expect it to be delicious."

"Is there something you need?"

Li Yun took a sip of soup and continued, "About that Berry Hackman. We’ve investigated her for the past few days and haven’t found any issues."

"But we can’t rule out the possibility that she’s extremely deep cover, or that she could be recruited by another person or organization in the future and become a problem."

"Whether you keep her or not is your decision. We won’t interfere."

Yan Feifan nodded, and Li Yun continued, "As for that spy ring from Japan, our in-depth interrogation revealed that their knowledge of you is limited to peripheral and publicly available information."

"As long as that pair of ’guinea pigs’ doesn’t leak any secrets, your research project is safe."

This made Yan Feifan breathe a sigh of relief. "They won’t be able to get much useful information out of the ’guinea pigs’."

"That’s excellent news!"

Li Yun ate a few more bites, then said softly, "Mr. Yan, my superior asked me to tell you that you should avoid doing things like what you did at Qiandao Lake, risking your life to save someone."

"’A person of great value shouldn’t tread lightly into danger.’"

Yan Feifan said with amusement, "How did I become a ’person of great value’?"

"Besides, I only went up to grab that venomous snake because I was confident I could handle it. I can’t just stand by and watch someone die, or let someone else who isn’t confident do something so dangerous, can I?"

Yan Feifan immediately followed up, "Have the police finished their investigation? Was that guy trying to harm his wife?"

Li Yun grunted in affirmation. "It’s been confirmed. The man owed over a million in high-interest loans and online debts from betting on sports. He bought that Silver Ring Snake in the countryside before coming to Qiandao Lake for the trip."

Yan Feifan nodded. "That’s good. I guess you could call it karma; he reaped what he sowed. At least I didn’t end up accidentally killing a good person."

At this, he couldn’t help but touch his right cheek.

The bruise there had mostly faded.

Growing up, Yan Feifan had often been "hit" by his older sister, but that was just playful roughhousing between family, and it never really hurt.

That punch, however, was the first time in his life he had been truly and viciously punched by someone.

Li Yun tried to persuade him again. "Mr. Yan, the health and lives of thousands upon thousands of patients depend on you now. Your well-being is naturally precious. In the future, you must think thrice before you act. Don’t be impulsive."

Yan Feifan fought the urge to roll his eyes and replied perfunctorily, "I’ll be more careful in the future."

Li Yun could naturally tell that Yan Feifan hadn’t taken her advice to heart. She had no choice but to give Duan Yu a deep, meaningful look...

Although Li Yun found the hospital cafeteria’s food disgusting, she didn’t waste it. Eating even faster than Yan Feifan, she cleaned her plate and was the first to leave.

After lunch, Yan Feifan went straight to the trauma surgery department. He met up with Chen Yu and Yu Suye to perform a post-operative check-up on the phalloplasty patient from the United States.

Although it was only the fourth day post-op and many tests couldn’t be performed yet, the existing results were still satisfactory.

At the very least, the few improved details they had incorporated into this surgery—based on the results of the previous two patients—were showing positive effects.

Chen Yu said with full confidence, "By continuously improving based on feedback, I estimate we can perfect the phalloplasty procedure and bring it to maturity in a year at most."

Yan Feifan reminded her, "That will require a sufficient number of ’guinea pigs,’ and we’ll need to receive feedback data from their real-world experiences."

Chen Yu chuckled. "Oh, there will certainly be a steady stream of ’guinea pigs.’"

"I have good news for you both. That American organization that came to inspect the hospital a while back has decided to donate one million two hundred thousand US Dollars to our surgical research."

"Combined with the R&D funds we’ve applied for, that’s enough to recruit ten to twenty ’guinea pigs’."

Yan Feifan chuckled. "Money makes the world go round..."

For the rest of the time, the three of them discussed how to advance the project, after which they received some experienced guidance from Chen Yu.

After Yu Suye officially transferred her employment to the Affiliated Hospital, Chen Yu began to groom her as her successor.

In Chen Yu’s own words, although Yu Suye was far from being on Yan Feifan’s level, she was still vastly superior to her other students and well worth the extra investment of time and effort.

As quitting time approached, Yu Beihua, Zhu Jian, and Li Tianlin came to find Yan Feifan and tell him their choices.

Yu Beihua wanted to be a neurosurgeon.

Li Tianlin wanted to specialize in trauma repair.

As for the quiet Zhu Jian, he chose to become a plastic surgeon.

’Plastic surgery, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, and there’s still cardiac surgery...’

Yan Feifan looked at the three of them and said, "You don’t have to limit yourselves to the fields I’m currently involved in. As long as it’s a surgical specialty offered at our hospital, you can choose it."

Li Tianlin said with a grin, "Teacher, my dream is to become a top sports injury repair specialist."

"That way, I can befriend famous sports stars and make money off them. How great would that be?"

Yu Beihua also explained, "Teacher, I’ve always wanted to be a neurosurgeon."

Zhu Jian said slowly, "I like turning ugly things into beautiful things."

Yan Feifan let out a soft "Oh" and said, "Alright, I understand your respective choices."

"I’m a bit busy for the time being. You all can study on your own for now."

The three of them replied in unison, "Yes, Teacher..."

Seeing that it was past closing time, Yan Feifan and Yu Suye left the trauma surgery department together, planning to head straight home.

"Mr. Yan, Mr. Yan..."

Hearing the shouts, Yan Feifan stopped and turned to find Liao Zili’s father, Liao Guilin, hurrying after him.

"Mr. Yan, your reputation is truly well-deserved! Zili said the mysterious leg pain that has troubled him for three years is gone, completely gone."

"He says his right leg feels like it’s been completely reborn. It feels incredibly light."

Yan Feifan smiled, and Liao Guilin continued, "As for our previous agreement, double the cost of his prior treatments..."

"I did the math. Over the past three years, Zili spent a total of over one point three million on his leg."

"Double that... I’ll round it up to an even three million."

"Mr. Yan, I’ll have the money transferred to your charitable foundation’s account tomorrow."

"Thank you, Mr. Liao!" Yan Feifan said politely.

"Mr. Yan, it’s only right. No need for thanks."

Liao Guilin hesitated for a moment, then said with an awkward expression, "Mr. Yan, you are also a top-tier plastic surgeon."

"You may have heard that a while ago, my exasperating older son injured his face in that cruise ship capsizing incident at the mouth of the Yangtze River."

"Mr. Yan, I’d like to ask you to perform reconstructive plastic surgery on his face."

Liao Guilin quickly added a promise, "As for the surgical fee, Mr. Yan, you just name a number. I won’t argue one bit."

Yan Feifan gave a dry chuckle and said, "I’m sorry, Mr. Liao, but I don’t have time to take on any unscheduled surgeries right now."

"There are many world-class plastic surgeons in the United States. For someone like you, contacting one or two of them surely wouldn’t be a problem."

He then cut off Liao Guilin, who was about to speak again, "Mr. Liao, that’s all. I have to get home now."

"Goodbye..."
