Chapter 235 - 234: Complained About Again
The nose reconstruction and upper lip repair surgery for the little amnesiac girl, An’an, began at 8:40 AM and concluded around 3:20 PM.
The surgery took half an hour longer than Yan Feifan had estimated.
The delay was primarily because Yan Feifan, striving for a perfect outcome, spent too much time shaping the tip and wings of the nose.
After a brief rest following the surgery, Yan Feifan, Wang Chuan, and Yu Suye had to act out a few scenes under Xiao Man’s direction, like actors on a set.
They posed for shots of various work activities—discussing the surgical plan, making rounds, and preparing for surgery—to provide Xiao Man with footage for editing.
After watching a few of the clips, Yan Feifan was surprised to find he was quite photogenic.
On camera, he didn’t even look that thin.
As soon as Xiao Man and the film crew left, Yan Feifan dropped the act.
He kicked off his shoes and flopped right onto the sofa in the director’s office, all decorum forgotten.
"Hey, why’d you take your shoes off?" Wang Chuan asked, a look of disgust on his face.
"My feet don’t stink. I just showered in the locker room."
Just as Yan Feifan finished his defense, the melody of "Jasmine" began to play.
He was about to get up when Yu Suye handed his phone to him.
"It’s your sister."
The moment Yan Feifan answered, his sister’s ecstatic voice burst from the phone.
"Feifan, the money from Baining Medical Technology came through!"
"Whoo-hoo! Six million! We’re rich!"
"Six million! Even with conservative investments, that’s two or three hundred thousand a year in returns. That’s more than my entire annual salary!"
"My dear brother, I can finally quit and just let you take care of me."
Yan Feifan mercilessly shot back, "You say that as if you’re some kind of ambitious hard worker right now."
Yan Ziruo’s sly chuckle came through the phone. "Well, what can I do? I have a genius, ambitious little brother to support me."
"A girl like me has no worries, so I don’t need to be ambitious."
"Oh, Feifan, about dinner tonight... if we invite Mrs. Su, we’d be hosting two separate parties at one table. That would seem disrespectful to both Song Yi and Mrs. Su."
"But it wouldn’t be right to just leave Mrs. Su at home, either."
"Feifan, can you ask Su Ye if her mom has plans tonight?"
Yan Feifan looked at Yu Suye, who was sitting on the sofa across from him. "Su Ye, does your mom have plans tonight?"
Yu Suye nodded. "She does. She’s having dinner with that Lu Yao tonight to feel out what he’s thinking."
Yan Feifan grunted in acknowledgment and spoke into the phone, "Sis, her mom has plans tonight, so you don’t need to worry about it..."
Not long after hanging up with his sister, Yan Feifan got a call from Zheng Libin at the police department.
"Mr. Yan, Xue Jisheng was extradited back to the country this morning."
"The government will be announcing it at a press conference this evening."
Zheng Libin added with a sigh, "It’s a good thing the funds he swindled were mostly from banks, corporations, and wealthy business owners."
"If he’d raised money from the general public, we might be seeing people jumping off rooftops tonight."
Yan Feifan asked, "Was all the money squandered?"
"There’s probably next to nothing left. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have fled the country."
Zheng Libin then asked, "Mr. Yan, about my colleague, Wang Zenglin... when can he get his surgery?"
"It’s hard to determine a specific time for the surgery just yet."
Yan Feifan replied, then explained, "His surgery isn’t urgent, and he’s also been diagnosed with fairly severe cirrhosis. He needs to get his body into better condition first."
He then thought of something else. "Mr. Zheng, I’m planning to learn how to drive, but the process of getting a license takes too much time."
"Is it possible for me to practice driving on my own and then complete all the licensing exams in a day or two?"
Zheng Libin’s voice came slowly through the phone. "Mr. Yan, as for the driver’s license exams, I can probably pull some strings for you."
"But let me be clear: we can arrange for you to take all the tests at once, but the standards for passing cannot be lowered one bit."
"That’s for the safety of others on the road, and for your own, Mr. Yan."
Yan Feifan said confidently, "Mr. Zheng, there’s no need to lower the standards. The stricter, the better. I’m confident I’ll pass!"
"I’ll contact you when I’m ready..."
After he hung up with Zheng Libin, Wang Chuan’s curious voice piped up. "You’re learning to drive?"
Yan Feifan sat up. "Frankly, I don’t trust my sister’s driving. I’d feel a lot better if I were the one behind the wheel."
Wang Chuan smiled. "Knowing how to drive does make life more convenient. You’re a quick study; you’ll probably pick it up in three to five days, tops."
After a short pause, he asked, "Now that An’an’s surgery is done, have you picked your next case?"
"The orphanage just sent over a new batch of files on children with disabilities."
Yan Feifan grunted. "I’ve already looked through the new files. There’s a girl with microstomia caused by burn scar contracture."
"She’ll be the next one."
Just then, Yu Suye cleared her throat pointedly.
Yan Feifan shot her a look. "As for the girl born without thumbs, you’re going to have to wait."
"Pick a different case for now."
Yu Suye grinned slyly. "There’s a little girl whose right hand is deformed from burn adhesions. I’ll take her."
Wang Chuan couldn’t help but chuckle. "You two... one of you is in charge of the plastic surgery center’s charity program, and the other handles the one funded by public donations. You’re quite the perfect pair."
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes but didn’t bother to argue.
The three of them continued to rest, chatting idly.
At 5:30 PM, Yan Feifan received an unexpected call from Dr. Fu Dongqiu of Huashan Hospital.
As soon as the call connected, Yan Feifan asked with some concern, "Dr. Fu, is there a problem with the patient from yesterday’s surgery?"
"No, not at all. His post-op exam results are excellent."
Fu Dongqiu explained, then added apologetically, "It’s just... we didn’t handle the communication on our end very well, and it’s led to a problem."
"What kind of problem?" Yan Feifan asked, confused.
Fu Dongqiu sighed. "The patient’s family is questioning your age and your credentials. They’re saying that for them to be charged such a high expert consultation fee, we must have conspired to cheat them."
"So the patient filed a complaint against us."
"Mr. Yan, I’m terribly sorry. This was our failure, and now it’s causing trouble for you."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "oh." "Dr. Fu, do I need to return the consultation fee?"
"No, absolutely not!"
Fu Dongqiu quickly explained, "All our procedures were fully compliant and documented. You earned that fee, fair and square."
"It’s just that because of the family’s complaint, someone from the Health Commission might want to ask you a few questions."
"I’m calling just to give you a heads-up."
"And again, I deeply apologize for our mistake and for the trouble this has caused you..."
After hanging up, Yan Feifan briefly recounted the conversation to Wang Chuan and Yu Suye.
Wang Chuan sighed. "The doctor-patient relationship is so strained these days. Patients don’t trust doctors. The moment there’s the slightest issue, they suspect the doctor and the hospital of having ulterior motives."
"And we doctors have to be so careful, always walking on eggshells, afraid to take any risks."
"It’s tough..."
