Chapter 489: Ceremony? (2)
Chapter 487
Just as Raze said, the moment they walked outside, the cohort laid eyes on a Vanguard member.
Scanning the cohort briefly, his eyes remained on Ray for several seconds before pointing towards the staircase at the end of the hallway.
"Follow me."
And with that, the cohort followed the young man.
Climbing the staircase, they ascended quietly while occasionally looking through the glass windows surrounding the place, which overlooked the other floors.
Though they could see a few people moving around here and there, they could barely hear a word.
Even with Ray’s enhanced hearing, he couldn’t make out what they were saying or even hear the sounds of their footsteps.
’Soundproof.’
They climbed the staircase for a few minutes before reaching a new hallway with dozens of doors leading to only heaven knows where.
Stopping in the middle of the hallway, the Vanguard member turned towards the cohort and began moving from one person to the other, handing them each a key with a number written on it.
After distributing the keys, he pointed towards the doors.
"Whichever number is on that key, that’s your room for the rest of your stay in this base. Inside the room, you will have whatever it is you could need to cater to your needs.
"The layout of the base will be communicated to you so you can know where to and where not to go.
"This base has the third-largest library in Alcatraz, so you could also visit there if you want to."
Thinking for a few seconds to see if he had missed anything, the Vanguard looked at the cohort, his eyes landing on Ray especially.
"Kindly don’t destroy anything. Whatever information you would need will be communicated at the ceremony tomorrow. Bye."
And with that, the young man turned around and walked away, leaving the cohort to stare at each other in confusion.
"Is it just me, or was he staring at Ray funny?" Chloe asked as she looked at the others, who were staring silently at their keys.
"So... I’m guessing we each have our own rooms?" Felix questioned as he looked at the numerous doors.
"Finally, I guess I can remodel my room however I see fit. Now I don’t need to leave my room before I create whatever tech I want to."
Van chuckled excitedly.
Without wasting too much time, he bolted towards the doors and began searching for the number that signified his room.
The others looked at one another for a few seconds before dashing towards the doors to do the same.
They traced the doors for a few seconds when—
"Found mine," Caster announced as he slotted in his key, twisted it, and opened the door before walking inside.
"Aha... mine is here."
Chloe announced before vanishing into her room.
Coincidentally, Trisha and Chloe’s rooms were side by side, so without any ceremony, the Ice Queen vanished into hers as well.
"Why’s my room close to that annoying Legacy’s?" Felix grumbled in annoyance as he stared at his door before looking towards Caster’s.
With a scoff, he pushed the door open and walked inside.
"Found mine," Ray announced before practically disappearing into his room as well, leaving Van and Kai to search for theirs.
The moment he walked into the room, Ray twisted and turned his head as he took in the size of his new abode.
"Wow."
Reaching towards the side of the wall, he flicked the switch to brighten the room some more.
On a normal day, he had no qualms with darkness, but with what he was seeing, he needed to view the room in its full glory.
With the lights included too.
The room was spacious and elegantly furnished, roughly the size of a luxury five-star hotel suite.
A large king-sized bed occupied one side of the room, neatly made with soft sheets and pillows, while a small bedside table rested on either side.
Across from the bed stood a sturdy desk with a modern computer neatly arranged on its surface.
Beside it was a tall wardrobe with enough space to accommodate an extensive collection of clothes.
Near one corner of the room was a medium-sized refrigerator, while a compact cooking area had been built directly beside it.
The kitchenette contained a small countertop, an electric stove, a sink, and several cabinets for storing utensils and food.
The room was completed by a large window that allowed natural light to spill across the interior, giving the otherwise private space a comfortable and refined atmosphere.
A separate door beside the wardrobe led into the bathroom.
Ray scanned his new room with a satisfied smile on his face.
This was luxury to him.
Back in Wall Rose with his family, his bedroom had been barely a quarter of the size of his current room.
Even at the Aspirant Corps, though the room they were given was wide and spacious, he still had to share it with both Kai and Van.
So this was exhilarating for him.
"Huh?"
Something on the bed caught his attention.
Walking towards it, Ray paused for a few seconds, his eyes slowly widening in delight.
A new uniform was waiting for him alongside a new pair of VMS boots. A note had been attached to the uniform.
Though, that wasn’t what attracted his attention.
It was the small box placed a few inches away from the uniform.
"Is-Is this—?!"
Picking it up, he opened the carton box to see a rectangular-shaped device sitting comfortably inside.
Pulling the device out of the box, Ray’s eyes gleamed excitedly as he tapped its surface.
The polished screen immediately lit up with a soft neon glow.
"A fucking phone?! I finally own a damn fucking phone?!"
His shout resounded across the walls as he grinned at the phone like a kid Santa had just surprised.
Turning towards the small note in the box, he picked it up and opened it.
It was handwritten.
Hence, he began reading.
"This is the Vanguard Order. Each member has a phone used to browse the web, where they would see the latest events happening.
"This phone is loaded with all you will need in the Order. You can add whatever else you need.
"There’s an app inside with a danger sign."
As he read, Ray turned towards the phone and spotted the app icon with the danger sign.
Turning back towards the note, he continued reading.
".... Whenever there’s an issue like a gate break or an Aberrant attack, the squad closest to the area will be notified. If that’s you, the app will let you know.
"The phone is connected to your squad members and then back to your Captain in case of an issue. Your personal ear comm device will be delivered tomorrow at the ceremony.
"I will let you figure out the rest of the device yourself, so... enjoy."
