Chapter 197: Fight the Golems (4)
Chapter 195
A grunt escaped his lips.
Then, purple shards flared out, crashing violently into the face of a beast.
Ducking below another incoming hit, a lock of blonde hair would have fluttered through the wind if it wasn’t for the sturdy bandana holding it back.
Spinning on one foot, Kai bashed his leg into the rocky torso of a third beast before using that very surface as a launchpad.
Spinning mid-air, the boy crossed his hands in front of his face, which were encased in thick crystal gauntlets just in time.
A heavy punch landed on the shimmering surface, the impact causing the boy to crash into the golem standing directly behind him.
The beast broke his fall, but it was ready to break him immediately after.
This sudden threat forced Kai to punch the massive hand opening toward his body, sending it away with a sharp strike.
Then, in one fluid motion, he bashed his fist into the singular eye on the beast’s head, causing it to crumple to the ground almost instantly.
Landing on the earth with a slight huff of air, he glared forward to see two more beasts staring daggers at him.
With furious sounds that resembled an avalanche of rocks falling down a mountain, they rushed forward with increasing speed.
Within moments, they were before the boy again, a descending kick coming from above.
All Kai did was spring off from the ground to the side, cleanly evading the heavy blow.
Mid-air, purple crystal spikes shot out with a forceful bang, burying themselves deep into the beast’s eye and causing it to crumple to the ground like the others.
’How do archers do this?’
He landed on the ground before dashing forward again, his momentum unchecked.
’... Hitting a moving target is huge work.’
A kick from a beast whipped through the air toward his face.
This forced the boy to immediately bend down low.
The leg, which was as thick as a tree trunk, crashed into the air above his head with a dull, heavy thud.
Springing back to his feet after a smooth twirl, he bashed his gauntleted hands into the limb, flinging it away with a little strain.
Speeding forward, he kicked off the ground with his fists raised high above his head, about to deliver a debilitating strike to the beast.
Only for the golem to lift its hands above its head, blocking Kai’s strike with ease.
But that was a tactical mistake; the crystals surrounding his hands fell off and transformed into small, sharp shards that dug deep into the beast’s forearms, causing dust to flow out from the punctures.
The golem was in visible pain and it angrily swung its leg from below.
Kai felt the shift and aimed to block, but the beast cleverly switched from a kick to a punch directed at his abdomen.
His midsection was partly reinforced with crystals, but the strike was nonetheless incredibly painful.
His body flew through the air with blood spritzing from his mouth in a fine red mist.
He ricocheted off the rocky terrain, dust clinging to his clothes before he angrily hit the ground, dragging himself to a sudden halt.
Almost instantaneously, he launched forward again with a soft, defiant smile on his face.
Despite the dust and dirt clinging to his body, he still looked as if he were glowing.
His skin was remarkably smooth and beautiful; coupled with that serene smile, he looked like someone blessed by a goddess of beauty despite the surrounding filth of battle.
If Ray had been paying any attention right now, he would have been absolutely furious at the unfairness of this sight.
Sliding under the beast’s kick, crystal daggers materialized in his grip.
He sent them biting into the beast’s legs, slashing at the stony surface, but it still wasn’t enough to totally break through the rugged exterior.
’Damn it. If only it had flesh, this would have been much easier.’
The golem spun around almost instantly, its leg shooting toward Kai’s face again.
But the boy had already anticipated the move; hence, he bent down low to the extent that his face was nearly touching the ground.
Springing back up with a forceful push, he hurled the daggers forward, sending them speeding through the air toward the creature.
Seeing this, the golem immediately crossed its massive hands across its face, shielding its one weak point but receiving damage from the impact nonetheless.
As it tried dropping its guard, Kai was already before it, a crystal spike rocketing toward the eye in an attempt to end things once and for all.
However, before the spike could strike, a tunnel of intense flames rushed forward and melted the eye instantly, causing the beast to crumple to the ground in a heap.
"Wha—?"
"And that’s one more kill added to my collection." An arrogant voice from the side caused Kai to turn around.
Orange hair.
That haughty look on his face.
The smug smile and the way he carried himself as if everybody were beneath him.
’Berg.’
Kai scowled immediately as he saw the legacy approaching.
Without hesitation, he yanked the beast core from the dead creature’s rocky corpse before Berg could reach it.
"What did you do that for? That was my beast," Kai demanded with a fierce glare.
Berg smirked as he watched Kai hold the beast core up, the sunlight reflecting on the surface and further adding to its shine.
"Oh, really? But I killed it, so it’s technically mine."
Kai was beyond furious.
His hands were now tightly clenched, his knuckles slowly turning white from the strain of his temper.
But the next second, he took in a deep breath, calming himself down as he looked at the other two beasts he had already defeated.
"Tsk. You can keep the credit," Kai scoffed as he began stomping away from the scene.
’... It’s just one stupid core. No use fighting over it and expending energy I’m supposed to use in battling actual beasts.’
As he was leaving, a wide, mocking smile remained on Berg’s face.
He spoke over his shoulders calmly:
"By the way, I’m not supposed to tell you this, but since you care so much and I want to see how competent the Larsons truly are, I’m gonna give you a hint."
Kai wasn’t even listening to the nonsense the legacy was spouting as he got back to searching for the beast cores in the rocky remains of the golems he had killed.
Regardless of the lack of attention, Berg continued:
"... I want you to try and save your silver-haired friend, if you can."
Kai froze.
His hands hovered over the rocky corpses on the ground, a neutral look masking his sudden internal alarm.
He slowly turned his head around to see Berg smirk at him with chilling confidence.
"That’s right. He’s not going to make it back to the Corps alive, and that’s a promise."
