Chapter 599: Nothing to fear
The most shocking part of Elion’s reveal was, of course, the fact that he possessed a dragon bloodline, but the way he had chosen to reveal it had made the reaction far greater than it otherwise would have been.
At the back, Persephone and her daughters were just as stunned.
Much like everyone else, they watched as Dawncrest’s expression went through a wide range of changes.
In the end, Wendy finally spoke, clearly attempting to regain control of the situation.
"Is this true, Duke Dawncrest? Was this all a hoax? Did you attempt to silence an innocent student simply because of a feud he had with your son?"
"O-Of course not!"
Cain immediately shot to his feet.
"He’s trying to deceive you! I don’t know how he obtained a dragon bloodline, but he’s clearly trying to deceive us!"
His voice rose as he pointed toward Elion.
"He’s a demon, I’m telling you!"
Elion sighed.
"Now this is what you call delusional. What’s ironic is the fact that the one to blame for this whole mess is not even here, but I can understand why."
Elion laughed lightly.
"You see, Willian Dawncrest is not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, no doubt; the Duke deemed it was much better to exclude him, just in case he messed up his ’carefully’ laid out plans. Anyway, there’s no need to waste time on speculation. I’m sure the great people gathered here value their time greatly."
He glanced toward the councillors.
"As the Duke himself suggested, let’s simply have one of the Royal Family’s mental specialists verify our truths."
By this point, the people within the court had come to understand one thing. This young man standing before them was quite terrifying.
Now it all made sense.
Why he had remained so calm despite being surrounded by so many powerful figures, with the King himself watching from above.
Why nothing seemed capable of forcing him into a panic.
And, more importantly, why the Vampires had decided that he was worthy of becoming their Prince Consort.
If things really ended in his favour, no doubt, the people gathered here would be keeping an eye on him in the future, for different reasons, of course.
’If anything, he’s an extremely capable young man.’
Queen Persephone thought inwardly, and she wasn’t the only one having such thoughts. After all, they had all felt his strength when he allowed his aura to leak earlier.
A High Mage.
Someone who was supposed to be nothing more than a first-year academy student had already reached the level of a High Mage.
Such a thing was almost inconceivable, and yet, all the proof they needed was right before them.
He was quite easily an unparalleled talent, the kind that any powerful family or faction would not hesitate to pursue.
And now, it was clear for everyone to see that Elion hadn’t come here merely hoping that things would go his way.
He had come very well prepared.
Wendy slowly turned toward the six councillors.
"I believe his suggestion is reasonable; there is no reason to deny him this at least. Just from this display he has shown us alone, the direction of the proceedings has changed remarkably."
One of the councillors, a narrow-faced man with greying hair, leaned back slightly in his seat.
"It would certainly settle at least part of this matter."
Elion’s eyes moved toward him. He had noticed the man before, but hadn’t paid him much attention.
But he didn’t fail to notice the way Duke Dawncrest’s expression seemed to perk up a bit when this man spoke.
That alone was enough to make Elion suspicious.
The Duke cleared his throat, quickly recovering and getting his wits about him. Perhaps he had decided that not all hope was lost after all.
"Councillor Veyron is among the most accomplished mental specialists in the kingdom. If anyone here can determine whether Lady Liora’s mind was tampered with and whether demonic traces remain, it would be him."
’There it is.’ Elion almost smiled. ’So that was their plan.’
He didn’t know if Dawncrest was stupid or what, but this was way too obvious.
Veyron gave a solemn nod.
"If His Majesty and the court require it, I have no objections."
"Neither do I."
Elion’s answer came so quickly that several people looked toward him, but Elion just smiled pleasantly.
"However, since this examination is supposed to settle the matter beyond doubt, I think it would be better if the person conducting it had no personal connection to either side."
Cain froze.
Elion’s smile widened.
"Nothing personal, Councillor Veyron. I’m sure you’re exceptionally capable, but the fact that Duke Dawncrest just suggested that you take up this role is quite... Concerning, to say the least."
Veyron’s eyes narrowed.
"Are you questioning my integrity boy!?"
Elion smiled.
"I meant no disrespect, but considering that Duke Dawncrest’s accusation could potentially ruin my life, I think I’m entitled to ask for someone completely impartial. I am not going to leave anything to chance. I’m sure you understand my concern; the Duke has been weaving lies up to now. What else could he have planned to make sure things go his way?"
Wendy glanced between the two men.
"That is a fair concern."
"It is unnecessary," Cain immediately said. "Councillor Veyron’s position alone should place his integrity beyond question."
Elion raised a brow.
"Then surely you won’t mind someone else doing it."
Cain fell silent.
That silence said more than Elion could have hoped for. Whispers immediately began spreading throughout the terraces.
Elion didn’t even need to say anything else.
Wendy’s expression became more serious as she looked toward Cain.
"Duke Dawncrest, do you object?"
Cain’s jaw tightened.
If he said no, then it would seem like he really had planned something with Councillor Veyron. Elion had pinned him into a corner.
"I simply don’t see why we should waste time finding another specialist when one is already sitting before us."
"Because the accused has raised a valid concern."
This time, the voice came from above, and the entire court quietened almost instantly.
Alexander had spoken.
The King had gone back to resting one arm against the throne while his gaze moved lazily between Elion, Cain, and Councillor Veyron.
"If this examination is meant to settle the matter, then there should be no room for either side to question its legitimacy afterwards."
Cain’s expression darkened.
"Your Majesty, I meant no—"
"I know what you meant." Alexander cut him off without raising his voice. He then looked toward Wendy.
"Call someone directly under the Crown."
Wendy bowed lightly.
"At once, Your Majesty."
Elion’s eyes briefly met Cain’s. The Duke looked as though he had swallowed something bitter.
’Well...’ Elion’s lips curved upward. ’That couldn’t have gone better.’
It seemed like this woman known as Wendy, the one overseeing the proceedings, was simply being impartial, but as far as Elion was concerned, it seemed like she was favouring him greatly, far more than he would have hoped.
Or maybe he was far too used to being treated unfairly, and so he had come expecting the worst, but things unexpectedly ended up going so well for him.
’Ahhhhh... What a great feeling this is.’
Of course, he had not forgotten about the other troublesome figure. Across the court, Liora was considerably harder to read.
She sat completely still, but the way her fingers had tightened against her dress hadn’t escaped Elion’s notice.
For someone who had supposedly been telling nothing but the truth... She looked remarkably nervous.
In any case, Elion decided to pay her no mind. Not long after, a rough-looking middle-aged man eventually returned with Wendy in tow.
His role was briefly explained to him, and judging by the man’s incessant nodding, it seemed he understood exactly what his job was today.
After that, he was introduced to the court as Boris, one of the mental specialists who answered to no one but Alexander himself, though most of those gathered probably already knew who he was. Perhaps the formal introduction had simply been made for Elion’s peace of mind.
Throughout it all, Elion occasionally exchanged glances with Zenith.
She looked incredibly bored.
In fact, she had already yawned several times and looked genuinely tired, even though Elion knew there was absolutely no way she actually was.
Before anything else could be done, however, Elion raised a hand.
"If it pleases the court, I would like to suggest that I be examined first."
A few gazes immediately shifted toward him.
Elion smiled calmly.
"Since I’ve been accused of possessing demonic characteristics, or perhaps having some sort of connection to a demon, it seems only reasonable that we confirm whether any such thing actually exists before moving on."
His eyes briefly moved toward Cain.
"After all, there’s no point wasting everyone’s time arguing over something that can be verified so easily."
Boris looked toward Wendy, then toward Alexander.
The King gave a small nod.
"Very well." Boris scratched at the rough stubble covering his jaw before turning toward Elion.
"Depends what exactly you want checked."
"Everything relevant to the accusation," Elion replied. "Demonic energy, contracts, possession, corruption... whatever else might prove that I’m secretly some demon in disguise."
Several people frowned at the casual way he said it.
Boris, however, merely nodded again.
"Easy enough."
Cain immediately leaned forward.
"And his bloodline."
Boris glanced toward him.
"What about it?"
"The possibility that he’s concealing another bloodline beneath the dragon one." He hissed.
Elion almost laughed.
’He’s really not letting this go.’
In any other case, he might have been right, since Elion did have three bloodlines now.
Unfortunately for him, hiding the incubus bloodline from prying eyes was an easy affair for Elion.
He could still remember that time during the tournament before he escaped, when he was afraid of the possibility of his incubus bloodline being discovered if his body was checked.
At the time, the Harem system had given him an easy escape that he hadn’t hesitated to take.
But now, he didn’t have the same concerns, using the Dragon bloodline to cover up the facts about his domineering strength, while also having Zenith temporarily purge the incubus bloodline using the Philosopher’s stone just in case they decided that Lust demons were technically also evil beings.
Yeah, he had done that just to be one hundred percent certain of his victory. Meaning, Elion had nothing to fear at the moment.
