Villain Seduces to Rise in Status

Chapter 48 - The Moon is Beautiful

She crashed back down to the earth in a sweeping spray of dirt and glowing debris, her body skidding across the scorched ground.

She came to a halt in a low crouch, her breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.

Her double-sided blade trembled violently in her hands, the tremors born from exhaustion and the lingering vibrations of his overwhelming strike.

The suffocating black Qi slowly receded from Cale’s blade, the massive expenditure of energy signaling the end of that particular exchange.

Zenith looked up through her bangs, emerald eyes glowing with an intensity that had nothing to do with exhaustion. The wild, breathless smile breaking across her face wasn’t the smile of someone about to surrender.

It was the smile of someone who’d just found exactly what they’d been looking for. She knew if she used her full power she could easily defeat him. Hell if she used the spells and other techniques he wouldn’t even stand a minute.

But then again, this guy was here for a sword fight. She understood, even he hasn’t used any techniques or other skills other than his sword and coating the sword itself with Qi. Although his energy was quite ’unique’.

But she knew, there were any and all types of energies in this world, so what if his’ is different.

With a sharp exhale that seemed to come from deep within her soul, Zenith’s Qi roared back to life. It wrapped around her double-sided sword like twin tornados, reforming her aura with a ferocity that suggested she’d just activated something anew. Some reserve of power she’d been holding in check.

She pushed off the shattered earth, leaving a shallow crater in her wake, and closed the distance in a heartbeat.

Cale met her charge without hesitation. The suffocating black aura of his odachi flared back to life, swallowing the ambient light as he swung to intercept. But something had shifted. The initial explosive tempo of their fight, that blinding, frantic pace of the opening exchanges, was already beginning to drag.

CRACK. CLANG. CRASH.

The subsequent exchanges became a desperate, breathless blur—but noticeably slower than before.

The heavy, driving rhythm of their strikes decelerated into something more grueling. Now, they could predict some of each others’ movements, so they completely avoided those ones and started fighting slow but with more precise attacks.

Zenith spun, her emerald and ivory blade carving arcs of light that grew noticeably dimmer with each rotation.

The glow of her Qi, so vibrant moments before, was visibly fading. Cale deflected with a heavy, two-handed block, but his boots slid backward in the dirt, his posture sagging for just a fraction of a second.

The oppressive black Qi coating his odachi flickered, thinning out into wisps of dark smoke that dissipated into the night air.

They broke apart, chests heaving, sweat stinging their eyes.

"Again," Zenith gasped, her voice raw and breathless.

She tightened her grip on the central hilt of her weapon, trying to step forward with renewed determination. But when she attempted to raise the double-blade, her arms trembled violently under the strain.

Cale shifted his weight to advance, gripping Noxis. He lifted it halfway to his shoulder before the tip wavered and dipped heavily toward the grass. His muscles simply refused to fire. The dense, devouring aura around his blade fizzled out completely, leaving nothing but cold steel in his exhausted grip.

For a long, agonizing moment, they just stared at each other across the ruined, scorched earth. The courtyard had become a testament to their clash.

Zenith’s aura gave one final, sputtering spark before vanishing entirely into the darkness. Her shoulders rose and fell with each desperate lungful of air.

Slowly, as if operating on a shared, unspoken wavelength, the tips of both their weapons lowered to the ground.

THUD.

Cale leaned heavily on the hilt of his odachi, using the massive sword as a crutch as he dragged in ragged, desperate breaths of air.

His blonde hair was matted with sweat, his clothes now covered in dust and scorched earth. The golden eye burned with fading intensity, the blue one reflecting exhaustion.

Across from him, Zenith let out a breathless, exhausted laugh—not a sound of defeat, but of satisfaction.

Her legs finally gave out, unable to support her weight any longer, and she dropped straight down into the dirt, entirely spent. Her dark hair fell across her face, her emerald eyes still glowing faintly with the aftereffects of combat.

The night fell quiet once more, save for the sound of their heavy breathing, the occasional crackle of residual energy dissipating into nothingness. Moonlight bathed both warriors—perfectly matched, perfectly drained, both having discovered something profound in the other.

Emma stood silently in the doorway, her expression contemplative, reassessing everything she thought she understood about the man who’d just given one of the their generation’s most talented swordmasters the fight of her life.

’Monster! He’s a fucking monster. He might even beat Eldest Brother at this point.’

The fight was finished.

It could be considered a tie—if one viewed it purely through the lens of swordsmanship and qi expenditure.

But if they fought with full power using all their cards, Cale would be licking the ground in under a minute.

Noxis had consumed half his reserves just to manifest, leaving him running on fumes while she’d been forced to exhaust what remained through sheer technique and endurance.

Both their swords vanished simultaneously. Zenith’s blade dissolved into the air with a shimmer of green and white energy, dispersing like morning mist. Cale’s odachi retreated into his shadow—a ripple of darkness swallowing the blade whole before the shadow settled back into normalcy.

Cale looked up at the beautiful moon hanging in the night sky, its pale light casting everything in shades of silver and grey.

He lifted his hand as if trying to hold the moon itself, his fingers splayed against empty air.

’Heh, I’m still quite weak, huh,’ he thought bitterly. ’This woman—she didn’t even try any underhanded methods. Sigh, fighting too much like nobility has its own downsides too.’

He flexed his fingers, feeling the lingering ache in his muscles.

’Who knew that even after half my qi was consumed just to summon the sword, I still had enough to exhaust her? She’s quite talented too, but I guess my reserves are monstrous. But I still need more. Much more.’

"You!" Zenith called out, breaking through his thoughts.

Cale turned to face her, watching as she pushed herself into a sitting position, still breathing heavily but with a smile plastered across her face. Not a smile of attraction or romantic interest—something far more dangerous for a weak and lazy soul like Cale.

A warrior’s smile.

"You’re good, huh," she said, her emerald eyes gleaming with interest. "You’re as powerful as my family’s knights. Don’t take it to heart—as a sword family, it’s an honor to be at their level at your age."

She paused, gathering her breath before continuing.

"How about it? Should we spar more someday?"

Cale nodded awkwardly, forcing what he hoped was a natural smile. "Heh, alright alright."

But even as he agreed, he could see it clearly in her eyes. The interest burning there wasn’t directed at him—not as a person, not as a man. It was directed at his fighting style, his strength, his cultivation potential. The thrill of combat against someone who could match her.

In her mind, he was a worthy opponent. Nothing more, he could try yes, but it just felt good to keep their relationship only as sparring partners and nothing more.

’She wouldn’t even show attraction towards me, huh,’ he realized, a bitter amusement coloring his thoughts. ’Sigh, women indeed are difficult creatures.’

He nodded inwardly, agreeing completely with his own assessment. Here was Zenith Kastor—beautiful, talented, powerful—and her interest in him began and ended with whether he could provide a good fight. Let him lose to her a few times, and she wouldn’t bat an eye in his direction.

But as he looked up at that pale, distant orb hanging in the darkness, he smiled.
