The Milf's Dragon

Chapter 242. The Rejection - First Blood

The news arrived via encrypted Tribunal communication channel.

A bridge tier being had been killed.

Not in accident. Not in self-defense. Deliberately. Forcefully. By Tribunal operatives working under the authority of Investigator Valorin.

Keris Vorn delivered the message to Owen and Lord in person, appearing in Drak’thar’s Palace courtyard as evening fell. Her expression carried something Owen had not seen before: Anger. Directed at her own faction.

"They called it a failed recalibration attempt," Keris said, her voice clipped and precise. "A being who had transitioned to bridge tier status began experiencing rejection symptoms. Valorin’s team was authorized to attempt forced recalibration back to traditional tier system. During the procedure, the being’s body rejected the restoration. Valorin claims it was an accident."

"But it was not," Lord said. It was not a question.

"No," Keris confirmed. "The autopsy shows deliberate disruption of the being’s power structure at critical moments. The rejection was induced. The being’s death was intentional."

She looked at Owen directly.

"The reshaping has its first casualty. And it was not an accident. This is organized resistance now. Not just disagreement with policy. Active opposition with lethal force."

---

The dead being was named Shar’vel.

She had been a merchant, classified Tier 3 five-stars under the old system. But her actual power structure did not match the classification. The systems that the tier system had force-fitted her into were constantly at war with her actual nature. Living under that misclassification was causing slow degradation. Her CE pathways were developing chronic inflammation. Her cognitive abilities were being suppressed by the forced structure.

When she learned about bridge tier status, she volunteered immediately for transition.

The transition had been successful. For six months, she functioned as a bridge tier being. Her chronic pain disappeared. Her cognitive abilities returned to baseline. She was, by every measure, healthier and more functional.

Then Valorin’s team arrived.

The official report stated that Shar’vel began showing rejection symptoms — her bridge tier nature destabilizing, creating physical distress. The recalibration team was attempting to restore her to tier system classification to prevent her death.

The actual sequence was documented by witnesses who had hidden recording devices.

---

THE RECALIBRATION (Reconstruction from Testimony)

Location: Processing center in mining colony

Time: 14:00 local time

Participants: Shar’vel (bridge tier being, merchant) vs. Tribunal Recalibration Team (6 operatives, 1 specialist)

The recalibration specialist was named Kovass. He carried devices designed to force beings back into tier system classification. The devices worked by projecting a standard tier system mold — a power structure template — directly into the being’s consciousness.

Normally, the process was gradual. The mold was introduced incrementally, allowing the being’s power structure to readjust.

Kovass was not using the normal procedure.

He activated the device at maximum intensity.

The mold was forced into Shar’vel’s consciousness like a hammer driving a nail.

Shar’vel’s bridge tier nature, which existed partially in suppressed reality, tried to exist in two states simultaneously — fitting the tier system mold while maintaining bridge tier structure. The conflict was immediate and devastating.

Her body went into convulsion.

Her consciousness began fracturing.

The operatives in the room recognized something was wrong. One attempted to stop Kovass. Kovass activated a second device — a power dampener that prevented intervention.

Shar’vel was held in the conflict state for seventeen seconds.

Seventeen seconds of consciousness existing in a state of absolute contradiction. Being forced to be two incompatible things at once.

On the eighteenth second, her power structure collapsed.

Not adapted. Not restored. Collapsed.

Her body followed moments later.

Kovass powered down the devices and made his official report: "Failed recalibration. Being’s power structure too divergent for restoration. Casualty resulted from procedure complications."

---

Owen read the detailed testimony in the Palace’s private chamber.

Gorvax was present. Seri was present. Yuki was present. They read together in silence.

When Owen finished, he looked up.

"This is not accident," he said flatly. "This is deliberate murder disguised as medical procedure."

"Yes," Gorvax said. "And it is the first. There will be others."

"Why," Yuki asked. "What does Valorin gain from killing someone who was successfully transitioned."

"He gains precedent," Gorvax said. "He gains proof that bridge tier transition can fail. He gains a body to point at when he argues that the reshaping is causing deaths. And he gains confirmation that his faction will follow orders to commit violence in service of stopping the reshaping."

"Lord needs to know," Owen said.

"Lord already knows," Gorvax said quietly. "He felt her death. Every bridge tier being felt it. There was a pulse across the cosmic substrate when her consciousness collapsed. Every being who has transitioned to bridge tier felt that moment."

Owen understood immediately. The cosmic substrate was how bridge tier beings were connected to each other. It was how they could sense each other’s wellbeing. Shar’vel’s death would have been felt like a sharp pain by every bridge tier being in the cosmos.

"What is Lord’s response," Owen asked.

"He is considering his options," Gorvax said. "And hoping that you will provide council on how to respond to deliberate violence in a way that does not escalate into outright war."

---

The first resistance combat occurred five days later, in a different colony, in a different sector.

A Tribunal enforcement squad arrived to arrest a bridge tier being who had fled recalibration. The being’s name was Vel’thas. He was a scholar, classified Tier 2 one-star under the old system but actually a bridge tier being whose power structure transcended the tier system entirely.

Vel’thas understood what was happening. He understood that being arrested meant recalibration. He understood that recalibration, based on what happened to Shar’vel, meant death.

He ran.

The Tribunal squad pursued.

Vel’thas was not a warrior. He was a scholar. But he understood power on an intellectual level that gave him advantages in combat.

THE FIRST COMBAT: VEL’THAS vs. TRIBUNAL SQUAD

Location: Salt flats outside colony

Time: Late evening

Combatants: Vel’thas (bridge tier being, scholar, non-warrior) vs. Enforcement Squad (6 operatives, 1 disruption specialist)

Vel’thas’s bridge tier nature allowed him to exist in multiple states simultaneously. But his existence in multiple states was not something he could control consciously — it was his natural baseline. He experienced reality layered. When he moved, he was moving through multiple layers of reality at once.

The enforcement squad used standard tactics: Flanking maneuver, coordinated strikes, synchronized CE deployment.

None of it worked against a being that existed partially in dimensions they couldn’t perceive.

Vel’thas threw a strike at one operative. The operative tried to dodge. But Vel’thas existed in three spatial positions simultaneously. The operative dodged into one version of the strike while two other versions hit from different angles.

The operative went down.

A second operative tried to land a power strike. Vel’thas was there and not there. The power passed through empty space. Then Vel’thas solidified behind the operative and struck.

Second operative down.

The remaining four operatives adapted. They spread out, no longer trying to coordinate. Individual awareness became more important than synchronized tactics. They began predicting where Vel’thas would manifest and positioning accordingly.

Vel’thas realized: "They are learning my pattern."

He escalated.

He stopped trying to fight and started trying to escape. He used his bridge tier nature to partially phase into suppressed reality while maintaining enough presence in current reality to interact with it. He became semi-transparent, semi-solid, existing across the dimensional boundary.

The operatives tried to track him. But tracking something that was partially phased out of reality was nearly impossible.

One operative tried to use an anti-magic disruption field. The field activated, covering a twenty-meter radius. Beings inside the field had their powers suppressed, forced back into standard tier system structure.

Vel’thas, caught in the disruption field, suddenly became fully solid.

He existed in only one reality now. Only one spatial position. Only one state.

The operatives converged.

Vel’thas, suddenly vulnerable in a way he had not been moments before, tried to fight back. But four trained operatives against an isolated scholar in disruption field was not a fair fight.

Vel’thas was about to be subdued when the disruption specialist made a critical error.

The specialist received a communication that the higher-level operatives were requesting immediate backup. The specialist diverted attention for a fraction of a second.

Vel’thas seized the moment.

He discharged all his available power in a single burst — not a controlled attack, just a pure release of energy. The burst disrupted the disruption field generator.

Field collapsed.

Vel’thas, now able to exist in multiple states again, became impossible to track. The operatives lost him in the chaos.

Vel’thas escaped into the desert, half-phased out of reality, leaving the enforcement squad with four wounded operatives and no capture.

---

The third incident happened simultaneously.

In a different location, a different bridge tier being was captured during recalibration attempt.

This being did not resist. Did not try to escape.

This being accepted recalibration.

And died the same way Shar’vel had. Consciousness held in contradiction state until power structure collapsed.

The pattern was becoming clear.

---

Owen received the reports in Drak’thar’s war room.

Gorvax stood at one end of a tactical map, marking the locations of incidents.

"Three deaths so far," Gorvax said, his abyss-black eyes tracking the map. "All confirmed deliberate. All using the same recalibration procedure. All executed with Valorin’s authorization."

"Why hasn’t Keris stopped this," Owen asked.

"Because Valorin is claiming they are sanctioned medical procedures," Gorvax said. "The Tribunal’s bureaucracy moves slowly. By the time Keris files official challenges, more deaths will occur. Valorin is moving fast enough that paperwork cannot keep pace."

"And the beings who are fighting back," Owen asked. "Like Vel’thas."

"Are considered escaped prisoners now," Gorvax said. "There is a bounty. Multiple factions are mobilizing to capture them. Valorin has framed them as destabilized bridge tier beings whose transitions failed and who are now dangerous."

Owen understood the strategy. It was elegant. It was also working.

Every bridge tier being killed by forced recalibration added fuel to the narrative that bridge tier transition was dangerous and unstable. Every being that resisted recalibration and fled added evidence that the transition created unstable, violent beings. Valorin was building a case through bodies and propaganda.

"We need to respond," Owen said.

"How," Gorvax asked. "Direct military response plays into Valorin’s narrative. He can claim that bridge tier beings are violent and dangerous. Doing nothing allows more deaths. Neither option is acceptable."

"Then we respond diplomatically," Lord said.

Both Owen and Gorvax turned. Lord had entered the war room silently. The child stood at the map, studying the marked locations with the focused intensity of someone understanding something crucial.

"We reach out to the bridge tier beings being targeted," Lord continued. "We offer protection. We create sanctuaries for those who want to transition but fear recalibration. We provide alternatives to death."

"That requires resources," Owen said. "Facilities. Protection forces. Infrastructure."

"Then we build it," Lord said. "Across the cosmos. Multiple sanctuaries in multiple territories. We show the cosmos that bridge tier transition can be safe if it is done with care and consent rather than force."

Gorvax nodded slowly.

"That is the correct response," the ancient being said. "You are learning what it means to reshape without destroying. To offer alternatives without forcing change."

---

The refugee camp was established on neutral world, in zone that had no primary power faction claiming authority. It was meant to be safe.

Valorin’s team arrived with no warning.

Location: Refugee camp processing center

Time: Mid-morning

Combatants: Owen (hybrid form) + camp guards (8 humans, 2 low-tier beings) vs. Valorin assault squad (12 soldiers, 1 lieutenant, 1 disruption specialist)

The assault was coordinated and brutal.

Valorin soldiers moved through the camp with military precision. They were not trying to kill indiscriminately. They were trying to extract specific bridge tier beings who had registered for transition.

The camp guards tried to defend.

They were outmatched immediately. Soldiers were better trained, better equipped, better prepared. The guards fell back toward the processing center where the refugees were being evacuated.

Owen was in the Palace facility when the alarm came through.

He felt it through the connection he maintained to the camps — a sudden surge of violence. Refugees in danger. Guards being overwhelmed.

He transformed to hybrid form and moved through the dimensional portal that connected Drak’thar to the refugee camp network.

He arrived in the center of combat.

Valorin soldiers were pushing through the last guard line. The disruption specialist was setting up a field that would interfere with bridge tier beings’ ability to manifest their multiple-state nature.

Owen placed himself between the soldiers and the refugees.

"Leave," Owen said. His voice was calm. His form was not.

The lieutenant assessed Owen quickly. Hybrid form. Obvious power signature. But only one combatant against twelve soldiers and specialized support.

"Stand aside," the lieutenant said. "This is authorized Tribunal operation."

"No," Owen said.

The soldiers advanced.

Owen did not want to kill them. These were operatives following orders. But he would not let them reach the refugees.

He raised his hand and activated temporal distortion.

A fifty-meter radius zone suddenly entered temporal flux. Time inside the zone moved three times faster than time outside.

The soldiers moving into the zone found themselves suddenly operating in accelerated time. Their movements became sluggish relative to each other. Their thoughts became difficult to coordinate. It was like moving through thick liquid.

Owen moved at normal speed within the distorted zone.

He struck the first soldier — not killing, just disarming. Moved to the second. Disarmed. Moved to the third.

The soldiers tried to advance against the temporal distortion but found their movements became increasingly sluggish. Actions that should take one second took three seconds. Coordination became impossible.

The lieutenant realized the situation and ordered retreat from the distortion zone.

Soldiers pulled back to normal-time areas outside the fifty-meter radius.

Owen released the distortion.

The lieutenant reassessed the situation. Owen was powerful enough to create impossible combat conditions. The soldiers were effectively helpless against his temporal manipulation. Continuing direct assault would result in casualties without success.

"You are delaying the inevitable," the lieutenant said. "Valorin faction has orders. We will return. We will succeed."

"Not while I stand," Owen said.

The lieutenant ordered tactical withdrawal.

Soldiers pulled back, gathered their wounded, and retreated.

Owen watched them leave, understanding what had just happened.

The resistance was not going to be stopped by dialogue or compromise.

The resistance was going to require force.

---

That night, Owen sat with Yuki in Drak’thar’s courtyard.

"People died today," Yuki said quietly. "Four refugees were captured before we could protect them. They are in Valorin custody now."

"They will be recalibrated," Owen said. It was not a question.

"Yes," Yuki confirmed.

Owen felt the weight of that reality. His attempt to create peaceful sanctuary had prevented some deaths but not all. Some beings would still die because he had not moved fast enough, prepared thoroughly enough, thought strategically enough.

"What do we do," Yuki asked.

"We prepare for war," Owen said. "Not because we want it. But because it is coming whether we accept it or not. And we need to be ready to defend the people we are trying to save."

Gorvax appeared in the courtyard as if summoned by the decision.

"The reshaping will be violent," the ancient being said. "There was never a chance it would be peaceful. Order built through force can only be changed through force. The cage did not voluntarily open. It was broken."

"How many will die," Owen asked.

"Unknown," Gorvax said. "But the answer is: More than zero. That is the cost of freedom."
