Chapter 757 - 753: A Formidable One
The Sun family’s eldest daughter-in-law was a force to be reckoned with. She went right ahead and told the family’s eldest son she wanted a divorce.
Mrs. Sun grew anxious. She couldn’t bring herself to blame her own daughter, and with no other options, she went to the eldest branch of the family to discuss it.
But after the last time, when the eldest branch had gotten nothing but trouble for their efforts, they wanted nothing to do with the matter and washed their hands of it completely.
Every day, a bitter taste filled Mrs. Sun’s mouth.
On top of that, with the eldest daughter-in-law gone, there was no one left to do the chores. Everything fell on Mrs. Sun. She worked every day, serving the entire family, young and old, while also having to care for her daughter. In just a few days, she had visibly thinned.
At mealtime one day,
Sun Yeshu looked at the table and, seeing no steamed egg custard, immediately grew displeased.
"Ma, don’t you know I need my nutrition now that I’m pregnant? Why didn’t you steam any egg custard for me!"
In those days, few could afford meat. The Sun family was not doing poorly, but even they only had meat once every three or four months. On a daily basis, the only real treat was eggs.
The Sun family raised five chickens, so they got a fair number of eggs each day.
But while there were many eggs, there were even more people. With seven or eight children in the house alone, the fact that Sun Yeshu got an egg every single day showed just how pampered she was.
This was Sun Yeshu’s daily routine.
Every morning, she’d have an egg, drizzled with fragrant vinegar and homemade sesame oil. It was absolutely delicious.
The members of the eldest branch watched as if it were a joke, saying nothing.
After all, the food Sun Yeshu was complaining about belonged to the second branch.
As for the second branch, it had been Mrs. Sun’s turn to make breakfast.
She had been up since just after four, busying herself with preparing a meal for the entire family, feeding the chickens, and cleaning. With so much to do, she had simply forgotten about Sun Yeshu’s egg custard.
Hearing her daughter’s complaint now, she spoke apologetically.
"Ma forgot. How about this, I’ll make it for you tomorrow."
Sun Yeshu wasn’t happy about it, but seeing the sour expressions on everyone’s faces, she could only reluctantly agree.
After eating, Sun Yeshu went out for a stroll.
She hadn’t been outside for the past few days and had no idea what had been going on. She was surprised to see someone planting corn with some kind of black iron frame, and even more so that people no longer needed to carry water to irrigate the fields.
She couldn’t help but ask, "What’s all this? You don’t have to carry water anymore?"
She was asking a neighbor’s wife. The young woman was just about to proudly explain Gu Jiaojiao’s invention, but when she looked up and saw it was Sun Yeshu, she remembered the bad blood between the two of them and immediately glared.
"I’m not talking to you. Go on, get out of here."
Sun Yeshu: "..."
Proud and arrogant, she simply turned and walked away when she saw the woman’s dislike for her.
But everywhere she went, people seemed annoyed with her. The more short-tempered ones even cursed at her outright.
Sun Yeshu had always considered herself the belle of Qingshan Team, accustomed to being fawned over by men. When had she ever been treated so poorly? She couldn’t take it anymore.
"You... you’ve gone too far! What gives you the right to say such things to me?"
This time, she had run into someone with a fiery temper, who was instantly annoyed by her whimpering.
"You don’t even show up for work, and you think you’re in the right?"
Sun Yeshu retorted, "Gu Jiaojiao doesn’t show up for work either! Why are you only picking on me?"
Hearing this, the young woman nearly burst out laughing.
"Someone like you dares to compare yourself to Gu Zhiqing? It’s true she doesn’t do field labor, but have you seen that corn planting machine? She invented it! And the water pump that irrigates the fields, freeing farmers from all that heavy lifting? She invented that too. The threshing ground, the time-and-labor-saving threshing machine—Gu Zhiqing invented all of it."
"Comparing yourself to her? Don’t you dare insult Gu Zhiqing. You’re not fit to touch a single hair on her head."
As farmers, they knew better than anyone how grueling the work was. To put it simply, Gu Jiaojiao’s inventions generated income and freed up labor. More importantly, they represented a path for everyone to prosper and build a better life.
How could just anyone compare to that?
