Chapter 692 - 688: A Blessing of Milky Candy
Da Hu was long accustomed to Gu Jiaojiao’s generosity. Whenever they went to play with Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang, they often got to eat candy she gave them, so it wasn’t strange at all.
Following Gu Jiaojiao’s instructions, Da Hu gave one piece to each child. The ones who received candy were thrilled. Some ate it on the spot, while others tucked it into their pockets, planning to go home and share with their younger siblings.
But every child who received a piece of candy grew to like Gu Jiaojiao.
After Da Hu finished handing out the candy, he announced with an air of importance, "All of you, make sure to help Gu Zhiqing out. This is her first time gathering pig feed, and she doesn’t know anything."
All the children answered in unison.
Then, everyone scattered.
Off to the side, Gu Jiaojiao covered her face.
’So I’m being looked after by a bunch of kids now.’
Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang didn’t leave. They stayed beside Gu Jiaojiao to gather pig feed. Gu Jiaojiao’s speed truly couldn’t compare to Sweet Girl’s. After working for just a little while, her back ached so terribly that she couldn’t help but sit down to rest.
Seeing that Gu Jiaojiao was already exhausted and out of breath after working for such a short time, the other children around them couldn’t help but shake their heads.
’This Gu Zhiqing is so fragile. With a constitution like that, if she were in one of our families, she’d get a whooping eight hundred times a day.’
Grumbling was one thing, but as the children gathered pig feed, they still occasionally stuffed a handful into Gu Jiaojiao’s basket.
With a handful from one and a handful from another, Gu Jiaojiao’s basket was soon full of pig feed.
Even after her basket was full, Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t in a hurry to turn it in. Instead, she continued further up the mountain. Whenever she spotted medicinal herbs along the way, she would casually pick them.
Once she had gathered a good amount of herbs, Gu Jiaojiao finally went to turn in the pig feed before taking the herbs home.
She was still unaware that Zhang Tianming had come to the Qingshan Team. The pig feed was gathered on the hillside, while Leng Yuan was working in a different area.
She turned in the pig feed and was about to head back when a hurriedly approaching Chen Xiaoli stopped her.
"Jiaojiao, the county leaders are here! They commended your husband and even gave him a commendation banner. They’re going to eat lunch at your house. The team leader told me to let you know that you don’t have to report for work—just go home and prepare a good lunch."
Gu Jiaojiao raised an eyebrow.
’Something this good is happening?’
Although she didn’t know which leaders had come, she was more than happy to get out of work, so she agreed immediately.
Chen Xiaoli shot Gu Jiaojiao an envious glance.
She had always thought Leng Yuan was quite capable. Without parents to protect him, he had not only found a job for himself, but also managed to live a better life than most people in the village.
There was another family in the village—two brothers—in a similar situation to Leng Yuan’s.
They had been driven out by their aunt and uncle and had nearly starved to death. Fortunately, the village helped them out a bit.
The grain the two of them earned was enough to support themselves, but the same aunts and uncles who had supposedly cut ties with them still came over to mooch off them every few days. The two brothers had no other choice but to borrow grain from the production team and pay it back after the summer harvest.
Because of their situation, both brothers were already thirty and still hadn’t been able to find wives.
’It just goes to show, you have to be tough,’ she thought. ’Take Leng Yuan, for example. When his aunt and uncle came to mooch, he wouldn’t argue with them directly. He’d let them take his things, but then he’d go over to their house and beat up all of his cousins. Not only that, he’d make the people who took his stuff return every last bit of it.’
’With a man like Leng Yuan, even without parents to back him up, girls were still willing to marry him.’
’It wasn’t that no one was interested in him back then; he just rejected them all.’
’Many people had muttered that with his circumstances, he was lucky anyone was interested at all, yet he was still being so picky.’
’But in the end, he married a beautiful, delicate wife. With a face like Gu Jiaojiao’s, no one for miles around could compare.’
As for any farther than that, Chen Xiaoli had never been.
So she wouldn’t know.
