Chapter 318 - 314: Everyone’s Good Intentions
Chen Ruoyu came out carrying a bowl. It was a little after seven in the morning.
The sun was halfway up in a sky completely devoid of clouds. It was a rare, beautiful day.
Aunt Zhao couldn’t help but remark.
"The weather’s been gloomy for days, but now that Leng Yuan and Jiaojiao are hosting their celebration, the sun has come out. This truly is an auspicious day."
The villagers were all a little superstitious.
It had just snowed two days ago, and the weather had been overcast ever since. But today, a big, bright sun was out, its warmth blanketing everyone.
This was a sign that Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao were blessed with good fortune.
Mrs. Chen thought that made a lot of sense.
"Isn’t that the truth? Gu Zhiqing has a fortunate look about her, and Leng Yuan is very capable. Their lives will only get better from now on."
For once, Chen Ruoyu also nodded in agreement.
Gu Jiaojiao’s personality had improved more and more since she got married. She also felt that Gu Jiaojiao and Leng Yuan’s future would certainly be a good one.
Chen Ruoyu helped wash the bowls and wanted to do more, but Mrs. Chen pushed her out of the kitchen.
"Chen Zhiqing, we can handle things here. Jiaojiao must be bored all by herself in her room. Why don’t you go keep her company?"
"When the guests arrive, you can come out with Jiaojiao."
Chen Ruoyu saw that the vegetables were almost all chopped and she couldn’t help with the main cooking, so she went to Gu Jiaojiao’s room.
In the room, Gu Jiaojiao was sitting alone on the bed, flipping through a book with a composed expression.
Chen Ruoyu walked in, sat on a nearby stool, and couldn’t help but ask curiously.
"Jiaojiao, aren’t you nervous?"
Gu Jiaojiao was the picture of calm.
"I am."
Chen Ruoyu was speechless.
’With that expression, who could possibly tell?’
In truth, Gu Jiaojiao was very nervous. However, she had decided to treat today’s event as a simple business gathering. Once she framed it that way, the wealthy young heiress who navigated banquets with effortless grace was back.
"Just stay calm. It’s only for one day, so don’t be nervous."
Seeing that Chen Ruoyu was a little tense, Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but try to comfort her.
Chen Ruoyu was speechless again.
’Her calmness is infectious. If Gu Jiaojiao can be so composed, then I certainly have no reason to be nervous.’
Chen Ruoyu handed Gu Jiaojiao a pair of pillow covers she had brought.
"Jiaojiao, I never got the chance to thank you for the wild boar incident. This is just a small token of my appreciation."
The kitchen and the surrounding wall at the Educated Youth quarters had been knocked down by the wild boars. The youths had been busy repairing them for the past few days and hadn’t had a free moment to express their thanks.
Gu Jiaojiao accepted the pillow covers and offered a compliment.
"They’re beautiful."
To Gu Jiaojiao’s discerning eye, the design was nothing special, of course. What mattered was Chen Ruoyu’s sentiment, which was far more precious.
In addition to the pillow covers, Chen Ruoyu also gave her two yuan as a gift.
In the village, five mao was considered a generous amount for a casual acquaintance.
But Chen Ruoyu had given two full yuan.
After giving the money, she brought up the matter of the other Educated Youths.
"The other young women in my dorm also want to thank you. They were originally going to come with me, but they were afraid it might be inappropriate. We discussed it this morning and decided that Li Fenggu will bring everyone over at eleven o’clock."
"We’ll just drop off the gifts and leave. We won’t stay to eat."
Chen Ruoyu was afraid Gu Jiaojiao might be angry, so she quickly added, "We didn’t intentionally hide it from you. It only came up last night, and that’s when everyone found out. Please don’t be angry."
She knew it wasn’t right to give such short notice, but they had only found out about the reception last night, since Chen Ruoyu hadn’t specifically mentioned it before. The whole thing was rather sudden.
Seeing Chen Ruoyu’s anxious expression, Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but say, "I’m not angry."
She understood their good intentions.
They could have given their gifts any time, but they all chose today.
They probably considered that Leng Yuan didn’t have many relatives, and she didn’t have any family here either.
If the wedding reception was a quiet, deserted affair, word would get out, and they would become a laughingstock.
’Everyone means well. How could I possibly be angry?’
