Chapter 638 - 630: The Debt of Upbringing
She had no way to refute Tristan’s words, but she couldn’t bring herself to truly abandon Jasmine.
It was just as Jason Lockwood had said. She wasn’t helping Jasmine, but atoning for her own sins.
The deaths of Maggie Monroe and Aria Joyce—it all started with her.
After leaving the hospital, she sat in the car, staring out the window lost in thought. Not long after they started driving, she suddenly thought she saw a familiar figure. She spun around and grabbed Tristan’s arm tightly. "Tristan, I think I just saw my brother."
Hearing this, Tristan stopped the car and followed Mika’s gaze. He saw Archie Lockwood leading a group of subordinates into a hotel. His brows furrowed slightly. After a moment of thought, he said softly, "IS Group is negotiating a major project right now. Let’s go over and say hello. After this, it might be difficult to see him again."
"What do you mean? My brother..." ’Even if he’s negotiating a big project, that shouldn’t mean it’ll be hard to see him again.’
Unable to bear seeing her like this, Tristan reached out and squeezed Mika’s small hand. "I heard some news. Your brother is planning to immigrate abroad with Rory."
"..." Mika lowered her head slightly as tears fell. ’It always feels like I’ve gained love only to lose everything else.’
Tristan pulled her into his embrace, comforting her softly. "Hey, don’t be sad. Even if he immigrates, it’s nothing to be upset about. Whenever you want to see your brother, we can book a flight and go see him right away."
"Mm." ’That might be true,’ she thought, ’but if my brother is immigrating, it must mean he doesn’t want anything to do with his old life.’
’He’s Archie Lockwood, not Archie Summers anymore.’
Tristan and she got out of the car and went into the hotel. A server led them to the private room where Archie Lockwood was.
Howard Rhodes was slightly surprised to see Mika Summers and Tristan Grayson. "Young Master Grayson, Miss Summers."
"Can we go in and see my brother?" Mika asked, nodding with a smile.
Howard Rhodes thought for a moment, then nodded and said respectfully, "Please wait a moment. The boss is in a meeting right now. I’ll need to go in and announce you."
"Okay, thank you for the trouble."
Howard went in and came out a moment later. He made a welcoming gesture. "Our boss invites Young Master Grayson and Miss Summers to come in."
"Okay, thank you."
When they entered, they saw only two people in the private room. One was her brother, Archie Lockwood. The other man looked somewhat familiar, but Mika didn’t know who he was.
Tristan, however, was frowning deeply.
The man stood up, a smile spreading across his face as he greeted Mika. "It’s you!"
"You are...?" Now Mika was really confused.
’He acts like he knows me.’
Tristan had just been holding Mika’s hand, but seeing that this man remembered her, he grew displeased. He wrapped his arm tightly around her waist in a clear display of possession.
A flash of disappointment crossed the man’s eyes. "You don’t remember me? We’ve met before. I even gave you my business card."
"I’m sorry, I really don’t think I remember." Mika patted her head in embarrassment. ’So many men have given me their cards. Back when I used to go to parties with Silas Kent, I’d get a whole stack of them in a single night. There’s no way I could remember every single one. Sometimes, I’d just toss them without even looking.’
Hearing that Mika didn’t remember, Tristan was inwardly ecstatic. ’Good that she doesn’t remember. If she doesn’t remember, it means nothing shady happened between them.’
Seeing the awkward atmosphere, Archie Lockwood cleared his throat, coughed twice, and stood up to make introductions. "Mika, this is Mr. Chase Sinclair, arguably the best lawyer in the country right now."
Then he turned to the other man. "Chase, this is my sister, Mika Summers."
"Ah, hello, Miss Summers." Chase Sinclair extended his hand and eagerly walked toward Mika.
Seeing this, Tristan’s brow tightened. He stepped in front of Mika and intercepted the handshake. "Hello, Mr. Sinclair."
Instantly, Chase’s expression turned cold. He glared at Tristan with obvious displeasure. "Young Master Grayson. A pleasure."
Tristan’s face was equally cold. He withdrew his hand, glanced at Archie Lockwood, and said coolly, "If you’re in the middle of something, my wife and I won’t disturb you. We can have a meal together some other time when you’re free."
"That won’t be necessary," Archie said. "What we were just discussing concerns you two as well. Even if you hadn’t come today, I would have had to ask you to meet me soon anyway. Why don’t you sit down? We can get everything settled at once."
"It concerns us? Brother, is something wrong?" Mika pulled away from Tristan’s embrace, walked to Archie’s side, and asked with concern.
"Yes. Rory and I will be going abroad soon. I plan to leave a portion of my assets to you and transfer the rest to Mom and Dad. It will be more than enough for their retirement."
Hearing Archie’s words, Mika’s eyes welled up with tears. Even though her brother was about to cut ties with them, he was still thinking about everyone before he left. "Brother, you don’t need to worry about Mom and Dad. Tristan and I have the means to support them in their retirement. This is money you worked so hard to earn. You should keep it for Rory."
"Silly girl, your brother isn’t so broke that I can’t support our parents, much less so poor that I can’t provide for Rory. Just accept it, and don’t worry."
"I’ll support my own wife. My mother-in-law and father-in-law are my responsibility too," Tristan cut in. "Archie Lockwood, if you’re leaving, then just leave. The Grayson family isn’t short on your money." He hated accepting things from others, like the company they received from Silas Kent as a wedding gift.
’Accepting something from someone means being indebted to them for life.’
Besides, if there was one thing the Grayson family didn’t lack, it was money.
"You have no right to refuse," Archie retorted. "This money is a dowry for my sister and a retirement fund for my adoptive parents. It’s a responsibility I must fulfill. The Grayson family may be wealthy, but that’s *your* family’s money. It’s not the same as this gesture from me."
Chase returned to the table, straightened a stack of documents, and placed them in front of Mika. He smiled and said, "Miss Summers, please take a look. If there are no issues, you can go ahead and sign."
"Mika, you know what happened with the Lockwood family. It’s impossible for me to ever go back to Mom and Dad. Even if you don’t want this, you can’t make this decision for them. Let this settle the debt I owe them for raising me for more than twenty years. Please, don’t make this difficult for me."
Mika froze, looking at Archie Lockwood in disbelief.
’So in the end, he’s really going to cut all ties with us.’
Tristan watched Mika hesitate. He glanced at the unwavering resolve in Archie’s eyes and knew his mind was made up. No one could change it. ’But to repay the gift of being raised with money... that’s just too cruel,’ he thought.
