Chapter 473 - 471: Stop Contacting Me
When he first woke up, he was terrified. He thought some unknown woman had picked him up and taken him to her home. Luckily, Xue Yang showed up just in time. That was a close call.
After returning to his school dorm, Cui Hao immediately took a shower, changed into a fresh set of clothes, and went to work.
He was caught by Yu Kexin the moment he arrived at the company.
"Cui Hao, didn’t you go drinking with the boss yesterday? How did it go?" She hadn’t slept well last night, her mind preoccupied with the matter. She had come to the office early today but hadn’t seen either of them for half the day. Now, she had finally managed to corner Cui Hao.
"What do you mean, ’how did it go’?" Cui Hao feigned ignorance.
"I’m asking how the boss is doing."
Why is this guy dropping the ball at a critical moment? Isn’t he usually pretty clever?
"Don’t worry, he’s perfectly fine. Eating well and sleeping soundly."
Yu Kexin rolled her eyes. "That’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking how the boss and the boss’s wife are doing."
"They’re great. Extremely great. Incredibly great."
Great. He had already been subjected to their public displays of affection first thing in the morning, so much so that he’d practically fled back to his dorm.
Yu Kexin was speechless. For a moment, she couldn’t tell if Cui Hao was being truthful or not.
"Stop overthinking it. What could possibly go wrong now that they’re together?"
Hearing this, Yu Kexin finally relaxed. She really didn’t want any problems to arise between the boss and his wife.
"Alright, I’m still not sober from last night. I need to go to the office and catch up on some sleep." With that, Cui Hao returned to his office.
Meanwhile, Wu Xiaoya woke up in her shared apartment. She washed up, got dressed, and prepared to head to work.
As soon as she opened her door, she saw Chen Ying sitting on the living room sofa, looking utterly exhausted. It seemed she had been sitting there all night.
Wu Xiaoya jumped in shock and quickly asked, "Ying Ying? What happened? Why are you sitting on the sofa?"
She walked over and sat down beside Chen Ying, gazing at her with concern.
Chen Ying turned her head woodenly to look at Wu Xiaoya. "Xiao Ya, did you already know that Xue Yang’s girlfriend is the heiress of the Lin Corporation?"
She couldn’t believe her best friend had deceived her. How could she not have told her something so important? She just couldn’t understand why Xiao Ya would keep this from her.
Hearing the question, Wu Xiaoya stiffened and instinctively avoided her gaze. "I probably... didn’t know for much longer than you did."
In truth, Wu Xiaoya had only just found out herself. But she knew that with Chen Ying asking like this, she would never believe a word she said.
Chen Ying’s face turned pale. "Xiao Ya, am I supposed to believe you?"
Just as I thought...
"Ying Ying, you and Xue Yang were never together, so it’s not a big deal. I heard you’ve been doing quite well at Lin Corporation recently. Keep up the good work," Wu Xiaoya said casually.
She didn’t understand. Chen Ying had clearly moved on, so why was she still hung up on Xue Yang? Did she really think he would break up with Miss Lin and then come back to her?
Chen Ying sneered. Keep up the good work? How am I supposed to keep up the good work now? After going around in circles, this was how her story ended. She thought she had found the best path for herself, but in the end, she was still within Xue Yang’s reach. Worse, she was now under his girlfriend’s control. It could have been anyone’s company, but it had to be his girlfriend’s.
Seeing Chen Ying’s expression, Wu Xiaoya had a bad feeling. "Ying Ying, don’t tell me you’re thinking of leaving Lin Corporation. Please don’t do anything foolish. Giving up your career for a man isn’t worth it."
"At this point, is there any reason for me to stay? Do you think his girlfriend would make things easy for me if she knew I was at Lin Corporation? Or do you think Xue Yang wants to see me at the office every day? That’s when my real suffering would begin. It would be better to leave right from the start."
"Ying Ying, I think you’re overthinking it. They’re not those kind of people," Wu Xiaoya soothed.
From what she had seen of Lin Xi, the girl didn’t care about anyone besides Xue Yang.
However, Chen Ying’s eyes widened as she stared at her in disbelief. "Xiao Ya, have you completely taken their side now? Do you not care if I live or die?"
A wave of hurt rushed through her. Having been sleepless all night, Chen Ying was now on the verge of collapsing.
Wu Xiaoya hurriedly explained, "Ying Ying, you’re getting the wrong idea. That’s not what I meant. If you met Miss Lin, you’d know she’s a genuinely good person."
Perhaps this was why she hadn’t told Chen Ying about it right away. She knew Chen Ying would overthink things and get the wrong idea.
It was one thing for other people to praise Xue Yang’s girlfriend to her face. But for her own best friend to do it... Chen Ying felt like she was going to lose her mind.
Wu Xiaoya finally realized her mistake and quickly apologized, "I’m sorry, Ying Ying. I didn’t mean it."
"Xiao Ya, I always thought we were best friends. That we were in the past, would be in the future, and always would be. I thought that even after we graduated and started working, or even when we both had families and children of our own, we would still be the best of friends. But now I see that’s not true. We will eventually lead our own lives and find new friends..."
Listening to Chen Ying’s words, Wu Xiaoya opened her mouth to speak but found that no words would come out.
Seeing Wu Xiaoya’s silence, Chen Ying grew even more disappointed.
"Xiao Ya, maybe... we shouldn’t contact each other anymore."
After saying this, Chen Ying turned and left. In that instant, tears finally streamed down her face. Yet she fought to hold them back, not wanting Wu Xiaoya to see her in such a vulnerable state.
"Ying Ying..."
Until Chen Ying disappeared from view, Wu Xiaoya couldn’t manage a single word to ask her to stay.
She was definitely going to stay by Xue Yang’s side. Based on the current trend, her position would only become more important, so there was no way she could leave. But if she didn’t leave, it would be incredibly difficult to face Chen Ying and share things about her work. Every promotion and raise would feel like she was flaunting it. Perhaps... not seeing each other anymore wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
Wu Xiaoya composed herself, picked up her bag, and left for work.
Before heading out, she called a moving company to help her pack her belongings. Then she went on a rental website to look for a new apartment.
Soon, someone called, saying they had a suitable place and asking if she wanted to view it.
"I’m about to go to work. Can I see it afterward?"
"Of course, of course. I’ll contact you after you get off work," the agent replied.
The agent’s voice sounded like that of a very young man, probably new to the workforce. Having worked at Xue Yang’s company for so long, Wu Xiaoya could roughly judge a person’s age and personality just from their voice.
