Chapter 736: What Do You Think People Are?
Chen Ye sprawled painfully on the ground. "Bitch! You dare hit me? You’re finished."
"You bitch, how dare you touch Researcher Chen?" a bodyguard roared, charging forward.
He was promptly kicked away by Yang Qi. "This has nothing to do with you, so stay out of it. This bastard tried to defile a martial artist of the Star Shining Society. He deserves whatever beating he gets."
"How audacious! Who dares to defame and strike my people? Are you seeking death?" an angry voice suddenly erupted.
The man in charge had arrived. It was Wang Cong of Refined Pharmaceutical.
Upon seeing him, Chen Ye and his men immediately began wailing, recounting a heavily embellished version of events. They were careful to omit the part where they had tried to assault the female martial artist.
Wang Cong’s gaze shifted from Chen Ye’s disheveled state to Yang Qi, and he became incandescent with fury.
"It’s you again, kid!" Wang Cong roared. "You opposed us at the Qifei Group, and now you dare strike my people here? Is there no end to this? Do you really think I’m a pushover?"
"I think you need to get one thing straight," Yang Qi said, staring coldly at Wang Cong. "I’m not the one opposing you; you’re the one who keeps opposing me. Did I not tell you? I’m not just with the Qifei Group, I’m also a member of the Star Shining Society. This old fool trying to defile my companion is unacceptable."
"Let me tell you something!" Wang Cong retorted angrily. "It doesn’t matter if you’re from the Star Shining Society or not! We at Refined Pharmaceutical have the Society’s explicit permission to conduct drug experiments at this outpost. If you ruin our experiment, you’ll face the consequences!"
"I wasn’t angry before, but now that you’ve brought that up, I’m furious," Yang Qi yelled. "Who gave you the right to use the Star Shining Society’s martial artists for your experiments? Especially for trials that skip animal testing and go straight to human subjects! Don’t you know that could kill people? What do you take our members for?"
"Heh, you’re asking who gave me the authority?" Wang Cong laughed. "Let me tell you, I’m extremely well-connected. I know a lot of people. Forget using martial artists from the Star Shining Society for experiments; what if I used martial artists from the War God Guard? What could you do about it? It’s their honor! If they help us develop a revolutionary drug, their deaths would be a worthy sacrifice."
SLAP!
Yang Qi strode forward and slapped Wang Cong across the face. "Honor? If it’s such an honor, why don’t you use martial artists from the Wu Family for your experiments? Bastard! You don’t treat the martial artists of the Star Shining Society like human beings. I’d love to see just what kind of traitorous scum gave you permission to do this. Tell him to get his ass out here."
"Who the hell do you think you are, you little shit? You’re really overstepping your bounds," Wang Cong spat, scrambling up from the ground. "You’ve hit me twice now. Believe it or not, I can have your superior come here and personally execute you. To be honest, the person who authorized my experiments here is the Deputy Commander of this very outpost, Wang Ben! Scared now? Bet you can’t afford to offend him, can you? Wang Ben is my uncle."
He wanted to see fear and shock on Yang Qi’s face, but unfortunately, all he saw was cold indifference.
Truthfully, Yang Qi had no idea who Wang Ben was. This outpost was generally managed by its internal members, and he had never visited before. All its operations were handled by Ye Feng and the others.
"Wang Ben, is it?" Yang Qi bellowed. "Call him. Now. If he isn’t here in three minutes, I’ll make sure he doesn’t live to see another sunrise."
"Heh, who’s so bold as to threaten that I won’t see tomorrow’s sun? Here in Thunder City, in all of Jingnan Prefecture, not many people dare to offend our Star Shining Society," a haughty voice announced.
Deputy Commander Wang Ben of the Star Shining Society’s Thunder City outpost had arrived.
Wang Ben was a burly man, and one could tell at a glance that his combat power was exceptional—likely the reason he was appointed Deputy Commander. Unfortunately, it seemed they had overlooked a character assessment.
"Uncle, you’re here!" Wang Cong quickly recounted his creatively altered version of events, finally pointing to his own cheek. "Uncle, I’ve never been slapped in my entire life! This time, he hit me twice! You have to stand up for me!"
"Outrageous! Daring to strike someone like this truly brings shame to the Star Shining Society!" Wang Ben roared. "You, boy! What unit of the Star Shining Society are you from? Report immediately!"
"You aren’t qualified to know which unit I belong to," Yang Qi said, looking coldly at Wang Ben. "As for you, how exactly have I brought shame to the Star Shining Society? Aren’t you the one who is a disgrace? Not only did you allow our martial artists to be used as test subjects, but one of them was nearly assaulted, and you did nothing to protect them. A Deputy Commander like you is a liability. You have no right to remain in the Star Shining Society!"
"Uncle, do you see how arrogant this kid is? He doesn’t even respect you!" Wang Cong hurriedly interjected. "His attitude is appalling! Look at him, he looks like he’s about to attack you next!"
This kid was quite skilled at fanning the flames and deliberately provoking Wang Ben.
Wang Ben’s expression turned exceedingly ugly. He felt slighted and humiliated in front of everyone.
He glared fiercely at Yang Qi. "I don’t care what unit you belong to! Apologize to the scientists from Refined Pharmaceutical. Right now! They are the future of the Dragon Country and our most respected citizens. You struck them, so you must apologize!"
"Deputy Commander Wang Ben, an apology isn’t enough! We want him dead today!" Chen Ye shrieked.
"Shut up!"
The female martial artist slapped Chen Ye squarely across the face. She didn’t care anymore. After what had happened, Yang Qi had saved her, and she had to speak up for him.
Yang Qi sneered at Wang Ben. "Apologize? Hahaha! Are you sure you want me to? I’m afraid you can’t handle my apology. People tend to die."
Wang Ben scoffed. "Kid, stop posturing. Whether I can handle it or not isn’t for you to decide. Kneel and apologize now. Don’t get up until Researcher Chen and his colleagues forgive you!"
"You should think this through carefully," Yang Qi said, his lips curling into a smile as he stared at Wang Ben. "Otherwise, people really will die."
Despite the smile, his eyes radiated a terrifying killing intent that made Wang Ben instinctively take two steps back.
He considered himself a master, yet he had unconsciously retreated from Yang Qi. How was that possible? Could this young man, who looked no older than his early twenties, actually be a top-tier expert? But then he thought, so what if he is? Anyone who dares to cause trouble in the Star Shining Society deserves to die!
"You think I’m afraid of you?" Wang Ben roared, trying to cover up his moment of weakness.
"We’ll discuss the apology later," Yang Qi said. "First, I want to know how much money you took to let these bastards conduct experiments here. Did you report it to your superiors? Does your Commander know about this?"
Yang Qi remembered that the Commander of this outpost was supposed to be Heavenly Slaughter Sword. Heavenly Slaughter Sword didn’t seem like the type of person who would condone this.
