I stomped over to the dining hall, finding the team sitting around a table eating breakfast. My anger cooled momentarily as they all gave me happy smiles, glad to see me out of bed. Also, Raylan’s new ears were worth a smile of their own as they twitched back and forth, sticking up through his dark hair. Realizing I was hungry again, I grabbed some food and joined them. Then I disregarded Lydia’s instructions and joined the Squad.

Jayce immediately made me the Squad leader again, which made my eyes water slightly with gratitude. After assuring everyone that I felt much better, I shared my suspicions about Thompson. To my disappointment, no one was shocked by my genius deduction.

<We already suspected the same thing, CQS Az,> Zaire told me. The awkwardness of my new Class name distracted me for a moment as he continued. <We’ve had a week to think about it, and now that we know the dungeon closed when Thompson died… it seems to be the logical conclusion.>

<Have you talked to any of the instructors?> I asked.

<We have not,> Zaire confirmed. <We were waiting for you to wake up first. Healer Lydia had been claiming that you would wake any day now for five days straight. We were becoming worried.>

<We should talk to Mason,> I said immediately. <He always looked out for us. I’m sure he didn’t know this was happening, he would have stopped it if he did!>

<Could he really have done anything? Thompson is in charge of the Academy, after all,> Jayce pointed out.

<Trust me, if Mason wants something, he’ll get it. Thompson definitely couldn’t stop him. He killed the matriarch! I bet he could beat Thompson and Trite with one hand tied behind his back!>

<Az, you do realize that the strongest person doesn’t always make the decisions, don’t you?> Tara asked.

I gave her a blank stare. What is she talking about?

For some reason, the rest of my team broke out laughing as Tara shook her head sadly.

Maybe it's all the corruption making everyone act strange…

It wasn’t long before Mason walked in, followed by someone I didn’t recognize. I immediately used Identify.
