Summoner Online: I Became the Tutorial Boss with a 999+ Villainess

Chapter 123: A message from above.

The message arrived at dawn.

It was not delivered by a merchant, nor by a rider bearing the royal crest.

It came through the communication crystal that Sanovere had installed in the Throne Room three weeks prior, the one keyed specifically to diplomatic channels with the Kingdom of Traona.

The crystal pulsed with a sharp, insistent blue light that cut through the dim glow of the dungeon torches like a blade through fog.

Sanovere was the first to notice.

He had been reviewing supply manifests at the obsidian table when the pulse began.

Without a word, he set the parchment down, adjusted his cuffs, and walked to the crystal pedestal at the far corner of the room.

He placed his palm against the surface and closed his eyes.

The message was short.

When he opened his eyes again, the faint, professional smile that normally rested on his face was gone, replaced by something far more focused.

He turned and walked directly to the First Floor corridor.

...

Kai was on the balcony overlooking Valdris when Sanovere found him.

The city had grown considerably in the weeks since its founding. The outer wall was now complete, a towering ring of reinforced stone and dark iron that encircled the settlement like a clenched fist.

Inside, the streets had taken shape, and the buildings that lined them were no longer the skeletal frameworks of a construction site but real structures with roofs and doors and purpose.

Skeleton workers moved in disciplined columns along the main avenue, hauling timber and stone toward the northern district where Teriam’s latest project was underway.

A cluster of beastkin civilians were gathered near the marketplace, sorting dried goods under the watchful eye of Ren, the wolf beastkin who had been appointed as Civilian Liaison.

It was a city that was beginning to look like a city.

Kai was watching all of it with the quiet intensity of a man who knew it could be taken from him in a matter of weeks.

’The wall is up. The patrols are running. The ward system that Lyra and Carlotta built covers most of the tunnel network. But none of that matters if Harken brings eight thousand soldiers to my doorstep while half my defensive infrastructure is still untested.’

He tapped his finger against the railing.

’I need the Elder Dragon awake. I need the scouting mission to the Ashveil Mountains to produce results. And I need Aldren to keep being stupid long enough for his sister to catch him, because the last thing I need right now is an inside man feeding my defense plans to the enemy in real time.’

"My Lord."

Sanovere’s voice came from behind him, calm but carrying a weight that Kai recognized immediately.

He did not turn around.

"What happened?"

"A diplomatic communication from the Kingdom of Traona. Sent directly through the royal channel."

"From Desmond?"

"From the King himself. It bears the royal cipher."

Now Kai turned.

Sanovere stood at the entrance to the balcony, his posture rigid. In his hand, he held a small, folded piece of enchanted parchment that still glowed faintly with the residue of the transmission spell.

"Read it."

Sanovere unfolded the parchment and read aloud.

"To the Sovereign of the Jaun Land, the Shadow of Victims. The Nexus Empire has issued a formal declaration of territorial reclamation over the southeastern provinces of the Kingdom of Traona, including all lands adjacent to and encompassing the Jaun Land. This is not a declaration of war, but a demand for the surrender of sovereign territory, backed by the explicit threat of military action should the Kingdom refuse. His Majesty, King Desmond Altair the Third, requests an immediate audience with the Shadow of Victims to discuss the joint response to this declaration. The matter is urgent. Time is not on our side. Signed under the Royal Seal of Traona."

Silence.

Kai stared at Sanovere for a long moment, his glowing golden eyes unreadable behind the dark mist that formed his features.

Then, internally, the real Kai spoke.

’Territorial reclamation. That is a fancy way of saying give us your land or we will take it by force. The Nexus Empire is not declaring war because they do not need to. A formal declaration would trigger the Hero Association’s intervention clause. But a territorial reclamation demand is a political maneuver. It puts the burden on Traona to either comply or be the ones who refuse, which gives the Empire a justification for invasion without tripping any of the continental treaties.’

He exhaled slowly.

’Smart. Ruthlessly smart. Whoever is advising the Emperor knows exactly how to work the system. They are not just coming with soldiers. They are coming with lawyers.’

He looked back at the parchment.

"When was this sent?"

"Less than an hour ago. The transmission was marked as priority one."

"And the declaration itself. When did the Nexus Empire deliver it to Traona?"

"The message does not specify, but based on the urgency of the King’s tone, I would estimate it was received within the last two days. Desmond would not have contacted us this quickly unless the threat was already at his doorstep."

Kai turned back to the balcony and stared out at Valdris.

’Desmond is scared. That much is obvious. The sovereignty agreement we signed was built on the assumption that the Nexus Empire would take months to mobilize. But Harken has been in position for six weeks, and now the Empire is making political moves to justify the invasion. The timeline just collapsed.’

He gripped the railing.

’And Desmond is asking for a meeting. Not sending demands. Not threatening. Asking. Which means he has realized something that his pride would never have allowed him to admit a month ago.’

"He cannot survive this without us," Kai said aloud.

Sanovere nodded.

"That would be my assessment as well, my Lord. The declaration of territorial reclamation effectively nullifies Traona’s northern defense strategy. If the Empire frames the invasion as a legal reclamation, the border fortifications become irrelevant. They will march straight through under the pretense of claiming what they say is already theirs."

"And the other kingdoms on the continent?"

"Will do nothing. Territorial reclamation disputes between empires and kingdoms are historically treated as internal affairs. No outside power will intervene unless the conflict spills across their own borders."

’Which it will not, because the Nexus Empire is too disciplined for that. They will take what they want from Traona, strip the region of its dungeons and mana resources, and withdraw before anyone else has a reason to get involved.’

Kai closed his eyes.

’Unless someone gives them a reason to reconsider.’

He turned back to Sanovere.

"The King wants a meeting."

"He does."

"He expects me to come in person."

Sanovere tilted his head slightly.

"The message is addressed to the Shadow of Victims. Given the severity of the situation, I believe Desmond is hoping for a direct audience. He would not have used the royal cipher for anything less."

Kai was quiet for a moment.

’Do I go? As the Shadow of Victims, walking into Throneguard would send a powerful message. It would tell Desmond, the Dukes, and every spy watching the palace that the Nameless Dungeon takes this threat seriously enough for its ruler to leave his territory. That carries weight.’

He paused.

’But it also carries risk. If I leave Valdris right now, with Harken’s scouts still probing the borders and the Elder Dragon sleeping beneath my feet, I am leaving the dungeon without its strongest defender. And if the Empire has agents inside Traona’s court, which they do because Aldren has been feeding them information like a buffet, then showing up in person tells them exactly where I am and exactly when my dungeon is vulnerable.’

He made his decision.

"I will not go."

Sanovere’s expression did not change, but his eyes sharpened with interest.

"You wish to send an envoy?"

"I wish to send Carlotta."

A brief pause.

"Again, my Lord?"

"She handled Desmond once before. She knows the court, the layout, the personalities involved. And more importantly, she has already established herself as my voice in Throneguard. Sending someone new would signal uncertainty. Sending her again signals consistency."

Kai turned fully to face Sanovere.

"But this time, she will not go alone."

Sanovere’s thin smile returned.

"Ah."

"You will accompany her."

The smile widened, just slightly.

"My Lord, I am honored."

"Do not be honored yet. Your role is not diplomatic. Carlotta will handle the negotiations. Your job is to observe."

"Observe?"

"The court has changed since Carlotta’s last visit. The sovereignty agreement shifted the balance of power inside the palace. The princess has been gaining influence. The prince has gone quiet. And when a man like Aldren goes quiet, it does not mean he has stopped."

Kai’s voice dropped.

"I want you inside those walls with your full intelligence network active. Every servant who moves at an unusual hour. Every messenger who arrives without a seal. Every whispered conversation in every corridor. I want to know what Aldren is doing, and I want proof."

Sanovere bowed at the waist.

"You suspect the prince has already made contact with the Empire."

"I do not suspect it, Sanovere. I know it. The question is not whether he has betrayed Traona. The question is how deep the betrayal goes, and whether Desmond has any idea."

’Because if Desmond does not know that his own son is feeding intelligence to the enemy, then this meeting is going to be a lot more complicated than he thinks. And if the princess is already suspicious, which I believe she is, then the court is one wrong move away from tearing itself apart at the worst possible time.’

Kai walked past Sanovere and entered the Throne Room.

"Summon Carlotta immediately. Then prepare yourself. You both leave before sundown."

"As you command, my Lord."

...

Carlotta arrived in the Throne Room in under four minutes.

She had been on the Second Floor reinforcing the ward network with her ritual teams when the summons reached her. The speed at which she appeared suggested she had dropped everything the moment she heard the words Lord Kai is calling for you.

She entered through the main doors, her long black hair still slightly disheveled from the work, and crossed the room with the kind of purposeful stride that only someone deeply devoted to the person sitting on that throne could manage.

She dropped to one knee.
