Chapter 434 --433
Chapter 434: Chapter-433
Julian saw them move out of the corner of his eye. A bitter, empty smile touched his lips as he straightened up, pulling away from Elara and leaning back into his grand chair. He picked up his wine glass with a completely steady hand, his nonchalant mask sliding back over his face like a steel shutter, cutting off the raw emotion from a moment before."Look at that," Julian murmured smoothly, his baritone voice returning to its lazy, effortless purr. "Your dogs are getting restless, Your Highness. You should probably go give them their orders before they ruin the banquet."
He turned his head away, staring out at the crowded ballroom with cold, hollow eyes, completely shutting her out.
Elara looked from Julian’s rigid profile down to her two commanders. For the first time in her life, the silence in her mind wasn’t beautiful. It was heavy, cluttered, and completely disrupted by the quiet, broken prince sitting right beside her throne.
Elara did not look down at the commanders for long. Her eyes pulled back to Julian, her mind attempting to run an automated diagnostic on the information he had just provided. In her previous life, and certainly in this one, human emotion was usually a secondary data point—something to be managed, bypassed, or integrated into an administrative budget.
But looking at Julian’s rigid profile, the strange tightness behind her ribs expanded. It wasn’t an error code anymore. It was a physical weight.
"The commanders do not require orders," Elara stated, her voice maintaining that unpolished, simple tone he had demanded. "They are performing their guard parameters. But your statement regarding... belonging... contains a logical inconsistency."
Julian didn’t turn his head. He kept his eyes locked on a pair of dancing diplomats in the center of the floor, his fingers casually tracing the silver rim of his goblet. "Does it?" he murmured, his tone smooth, empty, and entirely nonchalant once more. "Do enlighten me, Your Highness. I’m always eager to learn where my northern intellect falls short of your imperial standards."
"You said you wished for one person who belonged to you," Elara said, her words direct, lacking the buffer of legal jargon. "But a political treaty cannot govern ownership of a person. My arrangement with the commanders is separate from the state registry. It does not alter your status as my fiancé. It does not reduce your security."
Julian let out a quiet, dry sound that might have been a laugh if his chest wasn’t burning. He finally turned his head, his ice-blue eyes looking at her over the high collar of his doublet. The fake, charming smile was still plastered on his lips, but his eyes were completely dead.
"You really don’t get it, do you?" he asked softly, his baritone voice a lazy purr. "You think I’m worried about my status? You think I’m afraid of losing my head or having the treaty cancelled? Elara... I don’t care about the registry. I don’t care about Clause Four."
He set his glass down with a tiny, precise *clink* against the dark walnut wood.
"I was sent here as a spare piece," Julian whispered, leaning back slightly, his posture perfectly relaxed as if they were discussing the weather. "My father didn’t need me. My brothers wanted me gone. I came to this freezing court expecting to find an enemy, or a tyrant, or a politician. Instead, I found you. A woman who doesn’t even feel the winter wind. And like a fool, I thought... if I could just make you look at me, if I could just be the one person who kept you company in this giant graveyard of a palace, it wouldn’t matter that my family threw me away."
