Chapter 411 --411
The room was perfectly quiet again, the heavy air slowly dissipating as the palace ventilation carried away the scent of sweat and agitation. Elara held the quill with a steady hand, her signature flowing across the bottom of the Northern treaty brief with the exact same fluid, precise curves she always used.
Her mind was completely, beautifully clear. There was no lingering echo of Mahir’s hurt, no secondary thought about Ken’s cold compliance. There was only the paper, the ink, and the undeniable efficiency of a well-executed plan. The roller coaster of her life had offered another turn, and as always, she remained the only one entirely unbothered by the ride.
The heavy click of the door mechanism signaling Ken and Mahir’s exit left the office in a state of absolute, sterile quiet. The lingering scent of iron and musk slowly dissolved into the scent of old parchment and ink.
Elara didn’t pause. She flipped the page of the Northern Coalition’s portfolio, her eyes scanning the detailed provisions concerning the shared border garrisons. Her emotional detachment wasn’t a choice; it was a physical state of being. She didn’t feel a lingering sense of victory for putting Mahir in his place, nor did she feel the subtle prickle of guilt that a normal person might experience after systematically stripping a dedicated companion of his dignity. To her, the interaction had been a routine calibration—a necessary adjustment to ensure the gears of her household ran without friction.
A few minutes later, the side door to the office clicked open.
Demerti stepped back in, carrying a fresh tray of tea. He didn’t look at Elara directly; instead, his eyes immediately darted to the surface of her desk. His gaze locked onto the light, pale gouges left by Mahir’s claws. He let out a breath he seemed to have been holding since he heard the door slam from the outer corridor, his shoulders dropping slightly as he realized no blood had been spilled.
"I encountered Instructor Ken and Instructor Mahir in the courtyard," Demerti said, his voice quiet as he carefully set the tea down on the edge of the desk, far away from the official documents. "Mahir looked... remarkably focused on his duties. He didn’t even look up when the guards saluted."
"He was experiencing an operational error regarding his rank," Elara replied, not looking up from her reading. "I corrected the parameters. He will perform his duties with a higher degree of efficiency now that the boundary has been redefined."
Demerti pressed his lips together, a familiar expression of exhausted resignation crossing his features. He reached down, using a small cloth to wipe a stray speck of dust from his auxiliary desk before sitting down. "You have a unique method of managing staff, Master."
"I manage reality, Demerti. Sentimentality reduces productivity." She turned another page. "Have the domestic nobles finalized their speaking order for the imperial court tomorrow morning?"
"Yes," Demerti said, his tone shifting back into professional alignment. "Minister Harrison will introduce the foreign envoys. He intends to present the proposals as a collective petition from the council, arguing that your marriage is a matter of absolute national security to prevent any future succession disputes. They are trying to create a narrative where refusing the alliance makes you appear hostile to the empire’s long-term stability."
"A transparent strategy," Elara observed, her voice entirely flat. "They want to force Samuel into a position where he must either order his own sister to marry or appear weak before the entire court. They expect me to react with hostility, which would further validate their narrative that I am an unpredictable element."
She dipped her quill back into the inkwell, her movements completely unhurried.
