Devil Equinox

Chapter 61 - 61: HIDDEN CATALOGUE II

Exhausted, I lay on my bed and went back to that memory. I had been taken back to an undisclosed location in Downtime City. I couldn't describe where I had been taken with Mynde and his subordinates.

"Captain, I am going to talk to you for a bit," General Mynde told me. The vehicle I was in which was a grey 4x4 Jeep Wrangler which was modified to have blacked out tinted bullet resistant windows, an armoured chassis, fitted with all terrain bullet resistant tires and swapped out the original 3.6L Pentastar V6 with an all powerful 4.0L V8 turbo-charged engine, stopped in a dark building and then the lights lit up the whole building.

"We are here," General Mynde announced.

"Where is 'here'?" I asked him. He ignored the question and stepped out of the vehicle as well as the other men who were inside with us. I stepped out into a well-lit garage, and the other Jeeps just entered.

Following Mynde we entered a dark room filled with server racks, switches and the main hardware the servers. The room was chilled to keep all the servers operating maximum performance, withhold overheating slowing down their processing speed and impeding the data transfer happening between this server and other computers outside the building. Inside where a few people conducting maintenance on an isolated server.

We continued through the room into a hallway, which was pretty wide and had doors that led to different rooms, and they had clear signs of what lay behind them; however, we weren't going in there. A room ahead with floor to ceiling glass as walls and blinds to hide what happened in that room. Mynde walked into the room, and I entered after him and seat at the closest chair at the large, oval shaped meeting room table that he wanted me to seat in. He stood in front of the room. "Chris, we are going to be awaiting your temporary team to arrive." He said breaking the silence in the room.

The men who were with us stood guard at the entrance of the room, while two more entered to close the blind to have a private meeting in the room. "How have you been by the way, Chris?" he had asked me, and I knew it was meant for me but why did he use that name.

"I have been better," I responded bitterly. "Mynde why are calling me Chris?"

"Well, Captain isn't really the best name choice for oneself, so, I am giving you a common name for this operation that you will be doing with other members of Kevin's team, after I brief you on what you need to know. Oh! By the way Captain, you must keep the use of your powers to a minimal, we don't want others to know about it and spreading word. Could be dangerous or harmless but the fact is once the government catches wind of this out will be out of my hands,"

"I understand, Marvin," I told him, my eyes set on his.

"You never once used my first name, why the change?" his eyebrows furrowed, his smile disappeared and his eyes narrowed.

I guess the situation may have escalated but that was not the case, his hand resting on his pistol in its holster on his right hip. The air grew thin and hard for any man to breathe. I only stared at him, not showing any signs of movement or retaliation of any kind and he took notice, he studied my body language, and he removed his from the pistol.

"You know, one day you are going to endanger more than yourself with that attitude of yours in front of the wrong people. As for now, it doesn't matter." He spoke.

Footsteps short and heavy, long and light, fast-paced and vice versa approached the room. One of the guards opened the door for several men and women to enter the room. My companions had arrived, and they were disciplined but they got on the general's bad side on first impressions.

"I can excuse you all for not arriving at the communicated time, but what the fuck is this shit show! No actual composure of being a soldier, that's not how it works here. That's besides the point, what you are here for is a briefing and some fucking half-assed lecture from an old geezer such as myself. Let's get straight to the point. Of recent there has been concerns about some officials flying over the Pacifica Ocean off the coast of Las Meneda, - 40 kilometres southeast of this city – over an unnamed island here. Now, it came to our attention that this island may possibly be infested with demons that have not been able to leave the island for unknown circumstances. As you are aware, this is a suicide mission where you have to go and destroy the island and its inhabitants altogether.

"This is a perilous mission and some if not all of you may die during the course of this mission. In any case we are not reliable for such casualties, and in any case that you are left behind, I am sorry this, but you have served your purpose, and we would respect it. Now, since that is known, let's get on to worst case scenarios. Since this is not conducted by the government, anyone that is captured by the government will in fact be abandoned by both us and your employer, Secure Corp, we will avoid any and all involvement in this mission.

"Why are you all here? You are to go to that island, kill anything that crawls and wipe it of the map with the necessary bombs needed that will be provided upon departure and you shall place them in any area of the island of your choosing. Anyone human you find alive there you can bring them or put them out of their misery, it is all up to you. As for this man, who will be in your hands and your custody during this mission. Trust him or not it is all up to you, he will make sure that this mission is complete. And now get your fucking assess and meet at the designated rendezvous point for your departure."

Hours later, I found myself in cuffs again with even more individuals who were already there and Kevin as well in the cargo plane. Late in the dark stormy night, the plane experienced severe turbulence but the pilots managed to keep the plane from taking a dive and dip into the sea before reaching our destination. I closed my eyes once in a smoke-filled plane, with two highly explosive atomic bombs procured by the general and placed into the bomb in secure transportation boxes.

"ETA: two hours to destination," announced the pilot over the microphone.
