Chapter 51: There’s Another Woman’s Scent in This Room!?
Oh, right… Yalis had mentioned earlier that her father wasn’t home.
Which meant—for now—Lin Wei could afford to be a little reckless.
The thought made him chuckle as he stood and ambled toward the door.
He had, after all, promised to accompany her on an adventure through the labyrinth, but sneaking out in the middle of the night? That was a bit much, no matter how you looked at it.
“She’s supposed to be a Saintess, but she’s got just as much fire as those rookie adventurers,” he muttered to himself. “Does the Holy Church even know how to train talent? In the end, it’s all that useless Pope’s fault!”
Still grumbling, Lin Wei opened the door, about to call out “Yalis—” when the sight before him made him freeze in place.
Long, silver-gray hair, intricately braided and styled. A face so familiar, so beautiful, radiating a sanctity that dared not be profaned.
She stood tall and graceful, every angle flawless, perfect from any perspective.
But it was her eyes—those golden, soul-piercing eyes—that truly stunned him. Before that gaze, it felt impossible to hide anything. This is… my wife.
“Veya?”
He hadn’t expected to see her here, not at this hour.
For several seconds, Lin Wei could only stare, dumbfounded. Then, acting on instinct, he stepped forward, wrapped his arms around her waist, and swept her back into the room—his face breaking into a wide, delighted grin.
“What are you doing here?”
He’d been planning to go looking for Veya himself.
Unfortunately, as a member of the Holy Church, it wasn’t exactly safe for him to wander the Holy City just to find her. For someone with his background, that would be practically walking into a trap.
So he’d forced himself to put the thought aside, never expecting she would come looking for him instead.
Thank goodness he hadn’t called out Yalis’s name just now. Lin Wei’s heart skipped a beat in relief.
If his wife had caught even a hint of another woman’s name, given her possessive streak… things would have gotten ugly, fast.
Back when they lived in Aurens Town, even the slightest approach from another woman never failed to provoke a reaction from Veya—never what you’d call calm.
“I heard from a colleague that an adventurer from Lotai had arrived in the capital,” Veya said coolly, dusting off her hands as she signaled for him to let go. Instantly, she slipped back into her chilly, unapproachable Saintess persona.
Her eyes swept over Lin Wei, scanning him from head to toe. Only when she was sure there wasn’t a scratch on him did she finally—almost imperceptibly—let out a sigh of relief.
The truth was… when word of the goblin disaster reached the Holy Church, and she learned Lin Wei was caught up in it, she’d nearly dropped everything and rushed back immediately.
But the protective ring she’d given him hadn’t triggered, and the report had noted that Lin Wei had returned to Lotai without a hair out of place. After thinking it over, she’d forced herself to wait until today.
Now, seeing him here—he really was safe.
Of course, it made sense. The ring she’d given him was imbued with her own specially prepared power.
Unless a Demon Lord himself appeared and struck him down in an instant, that ring would keep him alive until she could reach him.
But now… finally, she was with him.
Veya did her best to hide her joy, forcing herself to sit calmly on the edge of the bed, though excitement bubbled just beneath the surface.
She took a slow, secret breath. The room was filled with his familiar scent—a comforting, intoxicating presence that instantly soothed her heart.
She wanted nothing more than to throw herself onto the bed and roll around with him, but the cool, untouched sheets told her he hadn’t even had a chance to sleep here yet.
Well then, she’d simply have to soak up his warmth directly.
“Sit over here,” she said, patting the edge of the bed and motioning for him to join her.
As Lin Wei drew closer, his scent thickened in the air, making her almost instinctively want to melt into his arms and drop every guard.
But… but right now, she was supposed to be the aloof, dignified Lady Veya.
She couldn’t let herself break character—not if she wanted to keep him in check from now on.
“What is it?” Lin Wei, of course, had no idea about the little battle raging in her head.
He sat down beside her without a care, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her gently closer.
Veya’s elegant brows knit the moment he touched her. She shot him a look full of mock disdain, but didn’t actually resist, letting him hold her as he pleased.
She took a long, deliberate breath—secretly inhaling deeply.
Three whole seconds passed before she composed herself and spoke.
“Did the goblin disaster scare you?” she asked, her voice cool, a sardonic smile tugging at her lips—masking her concern with a veneer of indifference, as if to say, I knew this would happen.
“I told you not to run off on your own, didn’t I? Did you listen to a single word?”
“It was one thing to mess around near Aurens Town, but the moment I’m not looking, you sneak off to some faraway labyrinth for an adventure.”
“You nearly got yourself killed in that goblin disaster, didn’t you? If Miss Iresha from the Hero’s party hadn’t happened to save you, I’d probably be looking for a new husband right now.”
Veya couldn’t help but feel a wave of gratitude for her earlier decision. Good thing she’d sent the subjugation squad out ahead of time—who knew what could’ve happened otherwise?
“But didn’t things turn out fine in the end?” Lin Wei replied, scratching his head with a sheepish grin. Even when his wife scolded him, her words never had much bite.
“Back up north, I got plenty of adventuring experience. Even with the goblin disaster, I knew how to get away if things went south. Besides, if it weren’t for that, I never would’ve met Miss Iresha.”
“If not for her, I wouldn’t have made it to the capital so easily—or be here with you now.”
“Hmph… Then you’d better thank Miss Iresha properly next time for saving you!” Veya reached out and pinched his cheek, giving him a fierce warning.
Still, as long as he was safe, there was no point in dragging it out. Besides… she wanted to soak up more of his warmth.
“I’ll definitely thank her next time,” Lin Wei promised, their faces now only inches apart. He could already feel the gentle fragrance radiating from his wife.
Truth was, he’d actually been the one to save Iresha, but now wasn’t the time to argue over credit. Instead, he deftly caught hold of Veya’s hand, closing the distance between them.
He leaned in, trying to steal a kiss before she could notice.
But just then, Veya—her expression still stern—suddenly frowned and took a quick sniff.
Her eyes narrowed in suspicion as she stared at Lin Wei, then abruptly let go of his hand and began pacing around the room.
Lin Wei was left utterly baffled, staring at her in confusion, clearly having no idea what had just happened.
“Uh… Veya? What’s wrong?”
Veya didn’t answer. She just kept prowling around the room, searching for something.
When she reached the desk by the window, her already icy eyes grew even colder—like a winter storm about to freeze the world.
Suddenly, she spun around, her voice so frigid it could have been carved from ancient glacier ice.
“There’s another woman’s scent in this room.”
Her gaze was sharp enough to cut. “While I was gone… what exactly did you do?”
“…???”
Lin Wei nearly broke out in a cold sweat.
That look in her eyes—chilling, merciless—sent a wave of guilt surging through him, even though he hadn’t done anything wrong.
Technically, a woman had been here earlier. He’d invited Yalis over during the day to help draft a written agreement.
But how in the world did Veya notice that? Was she some kind of bloodhound? Her senses were terrifyingly sharp!
And come to think of it… Yalis had been sitting right there at that desk, writing. Was a woman’s sixth sense really this scary?
“Earlier, a maid brought up some supplies for me,” Lin Wei said, scrambling for a plausible excuse.
“What, are you suspecting me? You think I spent the day doing something shameful with another woman in my room?”
Right now, the last thing he needed was to make excuses—he had to find a way to explain himself to her, fast.
Instead of wasting time with explanations, what he really needed was to shatter her doubts completely and snap Veya out of her suspicion.
With newfound resolve, Lin Wei strode toward her, his expression righteous and unwavering. Under her scrutinizing, doubtful gaze, he simply scooped Veya up and carried her straight to the bed.
“Words alone aren’t going to convince you, are they? And honestly, I’m too lazy to explain the whole story. So I’ll just prove it to you—with action. You’ll see for yourself whether I’ve done anything to betray you these past few days!”
How else could she be sure unless he showed her?
Wait—what is he planning?!
It finally dawned on Veya, and panic flashed across her face. Seeing Lin Wei’s mischievous grin, she instantly understood what he meant.
“Wait, I believe you! I believe you, Lin Wei—let me go, don’t—!”
She still had to return to the Holy Church later. Collapsing here was absolutely not an option.
She’d only come to soak up a bit of his energy—she’d never intended to have all her strength drained away!
But it was already far too late.
“No can do,” Lin Wei replied, firmly pinning both her hands as she tried to wriggle free, her eyes wide with mock terror. “I said I’d prove myself, and I keep my word. If I said nothing happened during the day, then I’ll make sure you understand that—personally.”
He leaned in, his grin devilish as he delivered his final, dramatic verdict.
“Prepare yourself, Lady Veya—your doom has come!”
