Chapter 296 296: A Skull Separated in Two
Looking at the two dead kinsmen who died without even seeing the incoming attack, the last Jackal Beastman howled loudly in terror before turning around to flee desperately.
The Jackal Beastmen were savage creatures who loved bloody battle and violent slaughter.
However, that courage only existed when they could actually see their enemies clearly.
Against unseen killers lurking silently within darkness, battle lost all meaning completely.
Swish.
Just as the fleeing Jackal Beastman reached the ruined exit, his body suddenly collapsed violently onto the ground.
His corpse rolled forward several feet before finally stopping motionlessly.
Dark blood splattered heavily across the ruined stones beneath him.
A thin crimson line slowly appeared from the center of his forehead downward.
Then horrifyingly, his skull separated into two halves while brain matter spilled messily across the ground.
Death came instantly.
Silent and merciless.
In another distant section of the ruins, two Jackal Beastmen sprinted frantically through the destroyed streets as though death itself chased directly behind them.
Their weapons were gone already.
Their breathing sounded chaotic and uneven.
Fear and panic covered their beastlike faces completely.
Whoosh.
Howl!
As though sensing his death approaching suddenly, one of the fleeing Jackal Beastmen released a miserable scream before collapsing heavily upon the ground.
The second Jackal Beastman did not even glance toward his fallen companion afterward.
Instead, he pushed his speed toward the absolute limit desperately.
He leaped over shattered rubble piles swiftly while scaling broken buildings without hesitation.
His movements were quick and decisive.
Survival remained his only thought now.
At the corner of a ruined street, Thoren emerged quietly from the darkness.
He stared calmly toward the fleeing Jackal Beastman before narrowing his eyes thoughtfully.
Then slowly, he shifted his gaze toward another ruined street nearby.
Miserable screams echoed continuously throughout the ancient ruins.
Some cries sounded muffled while others ended abruptly midway.
Soon afterward, sickening thuds followed repeatedly as corpses crashed lifelessly against the ground.
Thoren could already imagine the ongoing slaughter vividly inside his mind.
However, his expression remained cold and indifferent throughout everything.
He continued walking forward calmly without stopping once.
Several seconds later, the ruins returned completely toward their previous dead silence once more.
Everything became quiet again.
Heavy silence blanketed the ruined city eerily.
Only the cold desert wind moved quietly through the broken structures.
Thoren stopped walking eventually.
His deep blue eyes shifted slowly toward the corpses scattered across the ruined streets nearby.
Then calmly, he raised his hand slightly.
[Undead Summon.]
[Bone Manipulation.]
Dark undead energy spreads rapidly outward like shadowy mist.
One after another, the fallen Jackal Beastmen corpses trembled violently before slowly rising upright once more.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Their lifeless eyes ignited suddenly with eerie soul fire while their broken bodies stood motionlessly beneath the moonlight.
Now, they no longer belonged among the living.
They had become undead servants beneath Thoren's control.
Without hesitation, the newly summoned undead Jackal Beastmen marched directly toward Thoren in perfect formation.
Within less than a minute, more than twenty undead Jackal Beastmen stood silently behind him.
Above them, two undead Sanguine Vulture Spawn circled quietly through the night sky.
Their blood red feathers sliced silently through the air while their sharp eyes scanned the surroundings continuously.
After walking several more minutes through the ruined city carefully, Thoren finally stopped before a small hidden tunnel entrance.
Looking toward the tunnel quietly, Thoren narrowed his eyes slightly before understanding dawned gradually upon his face.
"So that is how," he whispered softly.
Earlier, he continuously wondered how the Jackal Beastman Chief managed entering the ancient ruins safely.
After all, Thoren himself only succeeded because of the undead Sanguine Vulture Spawn helping him bypass the violent winds surrounding the ruins.
Without aerial support, entering this place safely should have been nearly impossible.
But now, everything finally made sense.
The Jackal Beastmen somehow created or discovered another hidden entrance directly beneath the desert dunes.
That solution genuinely surprised him slightly.
Considering the terrifying sandstorms and violent winds rampaging constantly around the ruins above, tunneling beneath the desert truly remained the only practical option available.
Still, creating such a tunnel required tremendous manpower and patience.
Ordinary awakeners could never accomplish something like this successfully.
Only a powerful settlement like the Jackal Beastman Town possessed enough workers and resources for such a massive undertaking.
Without hesitation, Thoren stepped directly into the hidden tunnel afterward.
The tunnel itself remained extremely narrow.
Only one individual could walk through comfortably at any moment.
Whoosh.
The Illusory Floating Lantern appeared instantly above Thoren's head once more.
Its eerie green light illuminated the dark tunnel walls clearly.
With calm steady steps, Thoren advanced deeper into the tunnel confidently.
Several minutes later, he finally emerged from the opposite end hidden beneath another massive dune.
The tunnel exit remained concealed perfectly beneath layers of sand and broken stone.
Without careful inspection, nobody would ever notice its existence naturally.
Standing quietly beneath the moonlit desert sky, Thoren slowly raised his head while observing the endless Bleeding Desert stretching outward before him.
Then gradually, his gaze lowered toward the fading footprints left behind upon the sand.
A faint dangerous smile appeared slowly across his face afterward.
"I hope you run quickly enough to inform your master," he muttered coldly beneath his breath.
The escaping Jackal Beastman likely believed himself fortunate for surviving the massacre earlier.
Unfortunately, that assumption remained entirely wrong.
Thoren intentionally allowed that final survivor escape deliberately.
First, he needed to discover how the Jackal Beastmen entered these ruins safely.
Second, he required someone delivering a message directly toward the Jackal Beastman Chief personally.
Nobody plotted against the Grim Reaper and survived peacefully afterward.
Now that his plan already entered motion, Thoren no longer felt rushed leaving the area immediately.
Instead, he shifted his attention calmly toward the blinking system notification hovering before his eyes.
[Experience Gained +1500]
[Summoned Entities: Experience Gained +750]
[Spirit +1]
Looking toward the notifications, satisfaction flashed briefly across Thoren's eyes.
Immediately afterward, his attention moved toward his updated level statistics.
[Level: 9 (19,950/25,000)]
"Hmm? Less than six thousand experience points remaining before another level up," he murmured thoughtfully.
A faint look of anticipation surfaced gradually upon his face.
Thinking about his eventual return toward the Jackal Beastman Town, Thoren could already envision the tremendous amount of experience points waiting ahead.
Even though excitement filled his thoughts, he did not forget to assign his remaining attribute points immediately.
Following his original plan strictly, he allocated every available point directly toward his constitution.
[Constitution 44 (+10) -> 54]
The instant his Constitution crossed beyond the fifty point threshold, a warm current surged powerfully throughout his entire body.
The sensation felt incredibly refreshing.
His muscles relaxed instantly while the lingering soreness within his joints disappeared completely.
Even his breathing became lighter afterward.
Clearly, the improvement remained substantial.
Feeling the strengthening changes occurring within his body, satisfaction filled Thoren's heart quietly.
Then slowly, he lifted his head toward the distant direction of the Jackal Beastman settlement.
The bloody red moonlight reflected quietly within his eyes and a dangerous smile appeared gradually across his face afterward.
"I hope you are prepared for my return," he whispered softly into the hot bleeding desert.
