Chapter 238: A walk Among the Jackals.
Thoren stood by the window on the second floor, looking down at the street below. After a few hours of rest, his body had relaxed, and all the previous tension had been wiped away.
Although the owner of the Gila Fiend Inn was unfriendly, his Inn was up to the desert standard. Of course, it was also very costly.
To have a proper bath and a clean room, it cost him close to fifty silver coins. To any ordinary awakener, that was a huge amount of money, but to him, it was nothing.
"I should check out this town," he whispered under his breath. "Something is wrong with it."
He knitted his brow in deep thought. "Why can’t I find it on the map?"
He had tried to locate the town’s position on the map he bought from the camp merchant, but he could not find it anywhere. It was as if the Jackal Town was not part of the Bleeding Desert at all.
To confirm his suspicion and to find out where he truly was, he needed to explore and perhaps buy a more updated map.
Also, his Hemal Shards were no longer effective. He needed to buy fresh ones if he was going to leave the town safely.
With that plan in mind, he left his room and descended to the lobby. The sturdy, well built Inn owner raised his Jackal head and stared at Thoren for a moment before he returned to his own dealings.
Thoren also did not care about him in return.
He could not understand why the Jackal Beastman was so cold toward him, but he did not care anyway.
Walking out of the Gila Fiend Inn, Thoren looked at the somewhat bustling street and took a deep breath as he joined the pedestrians.
His silver hair swayed gently in the hot desert wind.
Many Jackal Beastmen glanced at him when they walked past him. Some even stopped completely to look at him. This puzzled Thoren greatly, but he did not stop moving forward.
After walking for a few minutes, he arrived before a medium sized store. He saw many awakeners coming in and out without any hesitation. Without hesitating, he walked inside the store himself.
The lobby was crude and dirty, with dust covering every surface.
Behind the counter, a Jackal Beastman was attending to the awakeners while speaking the human language. Though he was not fluent and made many mistakes, the awakeners did not find it difficult to understand what he was trying to say.
Beside him, a beautiful human woman was also attending to the customers. She had a leash on her neck, and her dress was a bit too revealing for comfort.
Walking to the counter, the young woman smiled at Thoren and asked him a question.
"Sir, welcome to our establishment. How can we help you?" Her face was full of forced smiles.
But deep in her eyes lay deep pain and profound sorrow.
Thoren did not dwell on her suffering. "I need a map," he said simply.
"You have come to the right place," she continued with her rehearsed script. "We have three types of maps. The low grade map, the middle grade map, and the high grade map."
"Which one would you like to buy?" she asked politely.
"Show me the high grade map," Thoren demanded without any hesitation.
When the Jackal Beastman heard Thoren asking for the high grade map, he turned his massive head and looked directly at Thoren.
His fiery eyes blazed with sudden anticipation and greed.
Shush!
He pushed the woman roughly to the side and stood before Thoren, blocking her completely.
Ah!
The girl fell to the ground hard, with a sharp scream escaping from her throat. Listening to her cry, the Jackal Beastman turned his head and glared at her with menace.
"Behave," he said in a stern, threatening voice.
Hmm.
Instantly, the girl trembled with fear and shut her mouth completely. Without waiting for the Jackal Beastman to speak again, she was already back on her feet with a forced smile plastered on her face.
"Sorry about that," she said to Thoren apologetically. "I am just too clumsy today."
Thoren did not speak, nor did he have any change in his expression. "So, what is so special about the high grade map?" he asked instead.
Returning to business, the Jackal Beastman ignored the girl completely and flashed his savage, long serrated teeth at Thoren.
"Human. Map. Complete," he said quickly and opened a hidden compartment from under the counter. He fetched out a rolled map and placed it on the counter.
"You look. See," the beastman said, gesturing for Thoren to examine the map.
Understanding his intention, Thoren took the map and unfolded it carefully. Looking at the detailed desert map, he was pleased inwardly.
Compared to the crudely drawn map he had bought at the human settlement, this one was a much higher grade. It captured many more details of the surrounding area.
More importantly, he managed to find the location of the previous human settlement on it without any difficulty.
Just as he had guessed, it was hundreds of miles away from the Jackal Town.
"How much?" he asked directly.
After a couple of minutes, Thoren left the store after completing his transaction. He spent only sixty silver coins for both the high grade map and two fresh Hemal Shards.
He picked a random direction and began to explore the rest of the town. He saw many inhuman things during his walk, but he never let them affect his expression.
Without understanding what was truly going on, he decided that he would rather be a silent spectator for now.
Suddenly, he halted in his tracks and looked back behind him.
The narrow mud road only contained a few people, with fewer shops lining the sides. A few human slaves walked on the road, their heads bowed low.
After staring for a few seconds, Thoren shook his head and continued his stroll as if nothing had happened.
A minute later, two figures came out of their hiding spot and breathed a deep sigh of relief.
"Do you think he detected us?" one of them whispered nervously.
"Impossible," his colleague shook his head with confidence. "Our stealth skill is one of the best in this town."
"That is true," his friend responded, but his voice lacked genuine confidence. "We should return and report the situation to the others."
"Agreed," the first man said.
With that silent agreement, the two vanished from their spot like shadows swallowed by the sun.
