Chapter 253: Who’s smiling now, you fat fuck?
The circle moved because it had to.
Not because it was graceful.
Not because anyone had practiced it.
Because standing still meant dying.
Boots crushed fresh snow as the survivors rotated around one another in slow, deliberate steps. Every few seconds somebody shifted places to cover another’s blind spot. Rifles barked. Hatchets rose and fell. Knives disappeared into skulls before being ripped free again.
The infected never stopped coming.
They crashed into the formation in uneven waves, laughing through broken jaws and shattered teeth as though the slaughter itself amused them.
"LEFT!"
Bill’s voice boomed over the chaos.
Saul reacted before he’d even finished speaking, burying the blade of his fire axe into an infected’s collarbone. The impact twisted the creature sideways instead of stopping it. It reached for him anyway.
Cherie stepped in without a word.
Her knife punched through its eye.
She shoved the body away with her shoulder before it could fall against Saul.
Neither of them acknowledged the other.
Neither thanked the other.
They simply returned to the circle.
Harry worked opposite Bill.
His wounded shoulder had soaked through with blood hours ago, yet he never slowed. Every recoil from his rifle made his jaw tighten, but he kept firing in measured bursts instead of emptying magazines in panic.
"Reloading!"
Hale immediately stepped across to fill the opening.
A baseline infected lunged.
Hale met it halfway, smashing the butt of his rifle into its nose before driving his hunting knife beneath its jaw.
Blood sprayed across his sleeve.
He shoved the corpse back into the others.
"Move!"
The formation shifted again.
Like gears grinding inside a broken machine.
Messy.
Ugly.
Working.
Inside the circle...
Terri stood with the others who couldn’t fight.
The elderly.
The wounded.
The children who had somehow survived this long.
Her hand stayed clamped over her mouth.
Every scream outside the circle made her flinch.
Every gunshot made her shoulders jump.
She hated this.
Not because she was scared.
She’d accepted being scared days ago.
She hated standing still.
Everyone around her was bleeding.
Everyone around her was exhausting themselves.
Even Harry had a shoulder hanging together by luck and stubbornness.
Even Saul had lost his brother less than an hour ago.
Even Bill...
She watched the older man split another infected’s skull with the edge of his axe before kicking the body away without breaking stride.
He looked exhausted.
He looked furious.
He kept fighting anyway.
"DON’T LET THOSE FUCKERS BREAK THROUGH!"
Bill buried the axe into another infected’s neck.
It collapsed twitching.
"KEEP THE FORMATION STEADY!"
Aubrey looked at him.
Just for a second.
So did Hale.
The realization still felt unreal.
Half an hour ago...
They’d been prisoners.
Now they were trusting Bill to keep them alive.
And Bill...
Was trusting them to do the same.
Another infected slammed into the perimeter.
Harry shot it twice.
Cherie caught another trying to slip between Bill and Saul.
Axes.
Knives.
Bullets.
The circle held.
Then—
It cracked.
One of Bill’s men cried out as an intelligent infected barreled through the front line. It hit him low, wrapping both arms around his waist before driving him backward into the snow.
His rifle spun from his hands.
It skipped once...
Twice...
Sliding directly into the center of the circle.
Right to Terri’s feet.
Time seemed to slow.
The infected climbed on top of the man, clawing for his throat.
The man grabbed its wrists with both hands.
His arms shook violently.
"GET IT OFF!"
Nobody could reach him.
If anyone stepped out...
Another opening would appear.
Bill saw it immediately.
His eyes flicked toward the rifle.
Toward Terri.
Then back toward the infected.
He couldn’t move.
Nobody could.
Terri looked down.
The rifle stared back at her.
Heavy.
Cold.
She remembered the last time she’d held one.
She’d nearly dropped it.
But just then— she remembered Hale crouching beside her after one of his...training sessions with her.
"You don’t have to become us."
"You don’t have to be strong."
"You don’t even have to be a good shot."
"Use the thing nobody else has."
"Use your brain."
Her fingers closed around the rifle.
She raised it.
The infected and the man were almost on top of each other.
No clear angle.
No clean shot.
Her breathing quickened.
She exhaled.
Adjusted three inches.
Compensated for where the infected’s weight would shift if the man bucked upward again.
The man screamed.
He pushed.
The infected instinctively leaned forward.
Exactly like she expected.
Terri squeezed the trigger.
The bullet passed so close to the man’s cheek that he felt its heat.
It entered through the infected’s forehead.
The creature immediately went limp.
Its body collapsed across him.
Silence.
Then—
"What the hell?!"
The man shoved the corpse aside.
"You little fuck!"
He scrambled to his feet, staring at Terri.
"That could’ve hit me!"
Terri never answered.
She wasn’t looking at him anymore.
She was looking beyond the circle.
Toward the valley.
Toward the fat infected.
It still hadn’t joined the fight.
It watched.
Every wave.
Every death.
Every adjustment.
Like a scientist observing an experiment.
Terri’s breathing slowed.
"...No."
Her voice barely escaped above a whisper.
Her eyes widened.
"No..."
Pieces began fitting together.
The way the infected moved.
The intervals.
The pauses.
The lanes they deliberately left open.
The valley.
The terrain.
The smell.
Her head slowly lifted.
"...Oh my God."
She knew what it was doing.
And more importantly...
She thought she knew how to stop it.
Before anyone realized what she intended...
Terri shoved the rifle back into the stunned man’s hands.
Then ducked between two survivors.
"What the—?!"
One of Bill’s men reached for her.
His fingers missed.
"HEY!"
"What the hell do you think you’re doing?!"
Terri burst through the opening.
Straight toward the horde.
Aubrey turned just in time to see her sprint into the snow.
"TERRI!"
Her heart dropped.
The infected immediately reacted.
Three broke away from the assault, converging on the terrified girl.
Terri’s face had gone pale.
She looked like she might throw up.
But she never stopped running.
She slid beneath the grasp of the first infected as its fingers closed on empty air.
Rolled beneath the swing of another.
Scrambled back to her feet.
Every movement looked terrified.
Every movement...
Had been chosen before she made it.
Aubrey took an involuntary step forward.
"We have to get her!"
Bill caught her shoulder.
"Leave her."
Aubrey rounded on him.
"Are you insane?!"
Bill never looked away from Terri.
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"Look at her."
Aubrey did.
Terri wasn’t running blindly.
She was counting.
Watching.
Measuring.
Bill’s grip loosened.
"That girl’s not panicking."
He watched her weave through another gap.
"...She’s solving something."
Far across the battlefield...
The fat infected stopped smiling.
Just for a moment.
—
Terri’s boots slipped twice before she caught herself.
Every breath scraped at her lungs.
Her heart hammered so violently she thought the infected would hear it over the laughter.
One nearly did.
It lunged from her left.
She ducked instinctively.
The thing’s fingers skimmed the top of her head before its momentum carried it straight into another infected charging from the opposite direction.
They collided.
Both hit the ground.
For only a second...
Neither got back up.
Terri froze.
Her terrified eyes stayed on them.
"...What?"
Behind her—
"TERRI!"
Aubrey’s voice cracked through the valley.
Terri didn’t answer.
She was watching.
One infected shoved another aside.
A third immediately ran into both of them.
Not because they were stupid.
Because they weren’t looking at each other.
They were looking...
Past each other.
Past everything.
Toward one destination.
Toward one command.
Toward—
Her eyes shot to the fat infected.
It hadn’t moved.
Not once.
It simply watched.
Its head turned slightly.
Almost imperceptibly.
Then the infected adjusted.
Not all at once.
In waves.
Left flank.
Center.
Right.
Like traffic responding to signals.
"...No..."
Another laugh echoed across the valley.
Immediately, the infected nearest the sound shifted.
Not randomly.
They created space.
A lane.
Terri’s breathing slowed.
She wasn’t seeing monsters anymore.
She was seeing a pattern.
A system.
A network.
The fat infected wasn’t controlling hundreds of minds.
It was controlling movement.
Flow.
Like a conductor leading an orchestra.
"...Oh my God..."
She whispered it to herself.
Bill had been wrong.
No...
Not wrong.
Incomplete.
The infected weren’t just working for it.
They were depending on it.
If their movement broke...
Everything else would.
She looked around.
The valley wasn’t empty.
Bodies.
Broken wagons.
Discarded backpacks.
Jackson’s corpse.
Several dead infected.
A snapped pine nearly twenty feet long.
Everything lay exactly where it had fallen.
Random.
Chaotic.
Until...
It wasn’t.
Her eyes widened.
Every obstacle had been naturally avoided.
Every wave curved around them.
Never through them.
Because flowing around an obstacle was faster than climbing over it.
The infected had unknowingly built themselves...
Roads.
Terri suddenly smiled.
It wasn’t confidence.
It was recognition.
"I don’t have to stop them..."
She turned.
"...I just have to make them stop each other."
Bill saw it immediately.
"...The hell..."
Harry glanced over while reloading.
"What now?"
"She’s not running."
Harry frowned.
"What?"
Bill never took his eyes off Terri.
"...She’s measuring."
Terri sprinted toward the fallen pine.
Three infected peeled away after her.
Perfect.
She reached the trunk.
Instead of climbing over it—
She shoved.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
"...Come on..."
Another shove.
The frozen log rolled barely an inch.
Enough.
She grabbed a broken branch and jammed it underneath like a lever.
Then threw her entire weight onto it.
The pine rolled.
Not much.
Just enough to angle itself across one of the invisible lanes.
The first infected reached it.
Rather than jumping...
It stumbled.
The one behind never slowed.
It crashed directly into its back.
A third hit both.
A fourth tripped over them.
Within seconds...
The lane clogged.
The infected behind kept running.
They didn’t scatter.
They couldn’t.
They continued following the same path.
Body slammed into body.
Laughing turned into snarling.
Snarling became tangled limbs.
Terri didn’t wait.
She was already running again.
Another lane.
Another obstacle.
Jackson’s body.
She grabbed one wrist.
Immediately gagged.
The dead weight nearly pulled her into the snow.
"Oh God..."
She swallowed hard.
"I’m sorry..."
Then dragged him.
Not far.
Just enough.
She left him sideways across another path.
The next wave hit him at full speed.
One infected tripped.
Then five.
Then fifteen.
The pile grew.
Movement slowed.
The wave behind crashed into the pile before it even realized it existed.
Harry lowered his rifle.
"...What the hell is she doing?"
Bill answered without hesitation.
"She’s changing the terrain."
Another lane collapsed.
Then another.
The valley no longer looked organized.
It looked...
Clogged.
Like arteries filling with plaque.
The fat infected noticed.
Its smile faded.
For the first time since anyone had seen it...
Its eyes moved rapidly.
Calculating.
It barked out another strange laugh.
A new command.
The infected responded.
Too late.
The lanes were already blocked.
Bodies had become obstacles.
Obstacles became walls.
Walls created bottlenecks.
Every correction created another collision somewhere else.
The entire herd began fighting itself for space.
Bill couldn’t help himself.
A laugh escaped him.
Low.
Disbelieving.
"...Jesus Christ..."
Harry looked between Terri and the collapsing formation.
"...She didn’t attack them."
Bill slowly shook his head.
"No."
His eyes stayed fixed on the terrified girl sprinting through the snow with tears streaming down her face.
"...She attacked the way they think."
Another infected reached for Terri.
She screamed.
Dropped to her knees.
Slid beneath its grasp.
Came back up stumbling.
Still crying.
Still terrified.
Still running.
She hadn’t stopped being afraid.
She’d simply refused to let fear do the thinking.
Far below...
The fat infected finally moved.
Not toward Bill.
Not toward Aubrey.
Toward Terri.
Its smile was gone.
