Chapter 813 - 789: The Corruptor
Mara is a primitive and savage deity, obsessed with bloody hunts and slaughter.
In civilized regions, Mara’s church is largely despised, as its members (usually evil therianthropes) pose a significant threat to local inhabitants; but in the frontier and wilderness areas, those who live by hunting can only reluctantly pay homage to him, even if they harbor fear of his cruelty.
Because hunters live by hunting, believers can obtain some special blessings.
Mara’s believers form "hunting parties," some operate openly during the day, while others only act secretly at night.
And perhaps this is the source of the terror for creatures, as a small slip during day or night can cost them their lives.
Mara’s faith has spread to many planes of existence, thus many like-minded bloodthirsty individuals regard him as their faith.
With invisibility and four tentacles, this corpse in front of him is undoubtedly a creature from another plane; they hold a loyal belief in Mara, and have followed him to this unfamiliar land.
A group of crazed hunters is undoubtedly a cataclysm for humans.
These hunters’ terror is unlike that of insects and beasts; during attacks, humans can more or less defend, retaliating even if overpowered.
But the monster that just died underfoot, its invisibility was exceedingly bizarre; if it weren’t for Chen Feng having the Endless Sword and the Ring of Frost, a typical legend might have long met their end upon close encounter.
To know oneself and one’s enemy, that is the way to ultimate victory.
Chen Feng furrowed his brow, attempting to sift through more information about the enemy.
Mara is an ancient deity, existing since the first beast hunted on the earth. He has always harbored a deep hatred for the Elf Race and has long allied with Ros. For thousands of years, he has tried to usurp the powers of other deities, achieving varying degrees of success.
"Ros?" Chen Feng’s face showed some surprise; he didn’t expect they would ally, but it makes sense as they share similar wicked tastes, both being outstanding in the evil camp, and both having a strong desire to seize other divinities’ power.
A being like Mara, devouring energy from the void no longer benefits him; only by consuming the powers of divinities can he advance further.
Of course, would killing Mara’s avatar enrage Ros? There is no need to worry, because given Ros’ character, she might even wish for her ally to enter a period of weakness, then decisively consume him.
Cooperating with Ros is a dangerous affair, no—with entities of the evil camp, cooperation often carries potential danger, unless the other party is a lawful being, otherwise, before killing their enemy, there is a high chance so-called allies might turn on each other.
Chen Feng stood still, neither saying to leave nor to proceed, leaving Lu Wei and another a bit perplexed, but they understood their roles, realizing Chen Feng had fallen into some state of contemplation, thus exchanging a glance to secure their own guard duties.
Mara’s priests love hunting, particularly enjoying making it as dangerous as possible (whether for hunters or prey), and Mara’s believers strongly promote the joys and benefits of hunting, staunchly resisting the expansion of civilized activities, striving to preserve the wilderness, for which they often instigate plundering and destruction.
Pillage and destruction.
It aligns perfectly with everything happening on this land.
The attire priests wear during ceremonies is made from the pelts and skulls of the most formidable beasts they’ve killed with their bare hands (usually bears or big cats, sometimes owlbears, displacer beasts, or other strange creatures).
Mara’s believers carry hunting horns at their waists and their bodies are filled with hidden daggers: in the lining of shoes and belts, straps on forearms, behind the neck (hidden in hair), or underarms.
When hunting in the woods, they prefer wearing red-brown clothes, usually covered by a mottled cloak of black, gray, green, etc. Those priests wishing to attract attention adorn their necks with necklaces of assorted animal bones, fangs, claws, or pelts.
The bones, fangs, claws, and pelts of prey?
Chen Feng focused on the monkey spirit beside him; those creatures weren’t gutted, more often killed instantly, and every monkey spirit seemed to miss some small piece.
Fingers, ears, or an eyeball.
The various signs indicate that the hunters’ intent in killing monkey spirits wasn’t for food, as they paid no heed to flesh, taking instead only some insignificant organs; perhaps, they preferred the feeling of the hunt over satiation.
Hunters lurk nearby, watching an entire race frolic in the woods; once the monkey spirits mutate, they possess the intelligence of human teenagers, and given enough time, they might develop into a humanoid group not at all inferior to humans!
The main reason humans have become leaders in this land is because of their brains and intelligence.
They possess neither the robust power of beasts nor the ability to fly like birds; yet, through thought, they have forged weapons with steel and powder, can even demolish a mountain in an instant, and through thought, have invented, through centuries of research and millennia-old imagination, iron giants capable of flight.
