Chapter 473 - 389: There’s Something Wrong with This World!
...
A few days later, Chen Sheng, holding his Outer Disciple badge, headed straight to the Scripture Pavilion on the west side of the Sect.
The Scripture Pavilion of Pan Sword Sect was a seven-story treasure building, with pale golden restriction runes entwined outside, ancient and majestic!
In front of the pavilion stood two jade lions, guarding the pavilion was an elder, who glanced at Chen Sheng’s badge with squinted eyes. With a point of his withered fingers, the pavilion door opened automatically.
The first floor of the pavilion was spacious and bright, with dozens of rows of neatly arranged bookshelves. The tomes on the shelves were all wrapped in cowhide, their spines etched with titles in red ink, mostly consisting of basic cultivation techniques suitable for Outer Disciples.
Chen Sheng’s gaze swept over the bookshelves, finally stopping at the section labeled "Cultivation Compendium," and he pulled out a roll of the yellowing "Basic Knowledge of Cultivation."
He found a table made of nanmu wood near the window and sat down, spreading out the tome.
The opening words were "Heaven and Earth, black and yellow, the universe is vast, Cultivators, stealing Yin Yang, seizing creations, seeking immortality," the writing powerful and bringing a touch of solemnity to the initiation.
Chen Sheng read word by word, the descriptions of the first two realms "Mystic Illuminating" and "Opening Light" were extremely detailed, listing methods of energy introduction into the body and skills for condensing mana.
But upon turning further, the text suddenly became terse.
"Foundation Establishment: Condensing Qi into liquid, establishing a Dao Foundation!"
"Heart Movement: Seeing through the heart image, stabilizing the Dao Heart!"
Further into Golden Core, Spiritual Silence, Nascent Soul, and other realms, there remained only names, without mentioning even the most basic signs of breakthroughs.
"Indeed it’s basic knowledge, truly basic enough."
Chen Sheng smiled inwardly, his gaze falling upon the Nascent Soul Realm, and in his heart, he had already aligned this worldly realm with the Spirit Realm’s system.
"Mystic Illuminating and Opening Light are just the Ninth Layer of Qi Refining, although there are added Heart Movement and Spiritual Silence realms, the general framework fits, but just has a more detailed division of mental states."
The Spirit Realm is a Grand Thousand World, its rules and principles reflecting the Great Void, hence the cultivation systems of various realms largely fit within the Spirit Realm.
Of course, though they may fit generally, on smaller levels, the cultivation systems in different Small Thousand Worlds inevitably have variations, and sometimes, the emergence of a peerless figure would redefine a cultivation realm.
Therefore, having extra mental state realms is not unusual.
Instead, such detailed division indicates that this realm must have had a master who understood the essence of cultivation.
Chen Sheng nodded, just about to put the tome back onto the shelf, when a tome with a deep blue cover on a rack labeled "Biography" drew his attention.
The cover was inscribed with "The Ten True Immortals of Southern Province" in gold, the four words gleaming with brilliance.
Chen Sheng, intrigued, pulled out the tome, its pages much thicker than ordinary tomes, its cover made of Flood Dragon silk, soft as silk to the touch.
The opening Chapter was "Biography of Red-browed True Immortal," he focused and read carefully, line by line of text entered his vision:
"Red-browed True Immortal, born in Qingzhou of Southern Province, Celestial Grade Wood Spirit Root, started energy introduction at five, understood the perfect truth of Foundation Establishment at Qingyun Mountain at ten, established a perfect Dao Foundation."
"At nineteen, ventured alone into the East Sea Flood Dragon Abyss, slew a thousand-year-old flood dragon, took its reversed scale to refine treasures, achieved Dao Heart Perfection, endured the Myriad Manifestations Heart Tribulation at Jiu Li Mountain’s peak, wrapped in thunder and fire remaining fearless, ultimately refining a High Grade Golden Core, accepted by Suspended Mountain as a True Disciple."
At this point, Chen Sheng’s fingers holding the tome slightly paused.
Foundation Establishment at ten? Golden Core at nineteen?
Such cultivation speed, even in the Spirit Realm is top-tier, in a Small Thousand World, it’s extraordinarily fast, and what’s this Myriad Manifestations Heart Tribulation?
He slightly frowned, continuing reading:
"At sixty-eight, secluded at Suspended Mountain for forty years, invoked Spiritual Silence Thunder Tribulation, subjected to Nine Heavens winds and thunder tempering, accomplished realm-breaking, achieved as Nascent Soul True Monarch, entrusted to handle Folding Halberd Peak."
"At one hundred seventeen, explored the wind tribulation in the Void, with Yin Spirit leaving the shell, roaming Nine Heavens, elevated to Yin Spirit Venerable, ranked among the Supreme Elders of Suspended Mountain."
"At two hundred nine, agreed to duel with White Tiger True Immortal from Heaven Mother Peak at Broken Cloud Peak, both achieved the Primordial Spirit, celestial light descended from Nine Heavens, taking them for ascension."
With a fluttering sound, Chen Sheng unconsciously flipped pages noisily.
This cultivation speed was too fast, Foundation Establishment at ten, Golden Core at nineteen, he could understand, perhaps due to consuming some kind of Treasure Pill.
But Nascent Soul at sixty-eight, Divinity Transformation at just over two hundred, Chen Sheng found it hard to comprehend!
Moreover, Myriad Manifestations Heart Tribulation, Spiritual Silence Thunder Tribulation, Void Wind Tribulation... these names of tribulations he had never heard of.
Normally, a cultivator breaking through Golden Core would simply harmonize Yin and Yang, condensing Dragon and Tiger, where is there a need for "thunder and fire wrap"?
Breaking through Nascent Soul, though involving thunder tribulation, is not akin to "Nine Heavens wind and thunder tempering" so perilous.
As for Yin Spirit Realm, Chen Sheng initially regarded it as a stage after Nascent Soul Great Perfection, breaking the shackles, becoming Seeing Heart and Understanding Nature.
At this stage, Nascent Soul is transforming, yet has not cut through illusions, achieving Primordial Spirit, naming it Yin Spirit seems appropriate.
But upon seeing the Void Wind Tribulation, he felt uncertain, for during this stage no tribulation should descend.
Not to mention that "celestial light descended for ascension."
Even when a cultivator in a Small Thousand World accomplishes Primordial Spirit, they require an Ascension Platform to ascend to the Spirit Realm, without one would have to rely on others.
Never have I heard of such a story as "celestial light for ascension"!
The doubt in his heart grew heavier as he flipped the tome to its continuation, his gaze scanning swiftly over the biographies of other True Immortals.
Qingyang True Immortal, Nascent Soul at fifty-two, Profound Dragon True Immortal, Yin Spirit at one hundred and three, Purple Mist True Immortal, Primordial Spirit ascended at two hundred eighty-seven...
Each True Immortal’s cultivation rate was astonishingly fast, breakthroughs associated with tribulations, achieving Primordial Spirit followed by celestial light for ascension.
Chen Sheng closed the tome, sunlight spilled through the lattice onto his face, half bright, half shadowed.
He had harvested dozens of Small Thousand Worlds, seen mortal worlds lacking Spiritual Qi, and nearly destroyed remnants, yet never encountered such a bizarre world.
Cultivation speed defying logic, breakthrough tribulations unheard of, even ascension methods brimmed with oddity.
Could it be a fabricated city story collection?
Chen Sheng stirred inwardly, stood and moved to beside the bookshelf, pulling out several volumes including "Records of Cultivation in Southern Province" and "Anecdotes of Past True Immortals," quickly flipping through.
Then discovered, the descriptions in other books, all largely similar, one fabricated, it’s impossible for all to be fabricated.
Moreover, even if fabricated, it wouldn’t be done on the basis of cultivation age.
Just then, the elder guarding the pavilion had somehow come behind him, his clouded eyes looking at the tome in Chen Sheng’s hand, speaking softly:
"Young man, though these True Immortal biographies are splendid, there’s no need to be overly attached, our Pan Sword Sect has stood for a millennium, yet has produced only one Nascent Soul True Monarch, the path to True Immortal, is ultimately a mirage."
"I see you’ve not started energy introduction into the body, it’s best to tread one step at a time."
Chen Sheng turned back, nodding slightly at the elder, putting the tomes back onto the shelf one by one, he walked steadily out of the Scripture Pavilion.
Sunlight shone on him, yet could not dispel the doubts in his heart.
"This world, isn’t right."
"Could it be..."
