Chapter 389: Maximum intensity
Maximum intensity — the cloak’s fire expanding beyond his body’s surface and pushing outward in all directions, the flame meeting the magma ring.
Fire and magma meeting — the two heat sources interacting at the boundary, the combined thermal output producing something between the two that was hotter than either alone.
The magma ring cooled at the contact surface — the fire heating the magma to the point where the surface layer solidified faster than it would have solidified naturally, the thermal equilibrium between the Veil’s fire and the magma’s own heat producing a crust on the magma’s surface that the fire had paradoxically created by being hotter than the magma’s surface temperature.
The magma ring developed a solid crust.
A surface Klin could stand on — or cross.
He stepped onto the hardened magma crust.
It held.
He crossed the ring — his Flame Veil’s continued contact with the magma surface maintaining the crust through the same paradoxical cooling effect, the fire that should have melted the magma instead hardening its surface by equilibrating the temperature.
He was through the magma ring.
Inside the crystal perimeter.
Ten feet from Cyrus.
Cyrus saw the crossing and began establishing the Core Layer.
The fifth and deepest — the establishment process the longest of the five, the Core Layer requiring the full connection depth that the previous four layers had been building toward.
Ten seconds to establish.
Klin was ten feet away.
The Flame Veil burned at maximum — the sustained cost running, the fire reserves depleting at the rate the maximum-intensity Veil demanded.
He charged.
Cyrus raised stone pillars — the Surface Layer still active, the terrain alteration responding while the Core Layer established in the background, the pillars rising between them.
Klin crashed through them — the Flame Veil burning the pillars on contact, the fire conducting into the stone faster than the pillars could stop the advance, the charge carrying through the breaking terrain.
Seven feet.
Crystal spires — the Crystal Layer still active.
Klin drove his Flame Veil-covered shoulder through the nearest spire.
The spire shattered — the crystal construction meeting the maximum-intensity Veil, the fire’s thermal energy exceeding the crystal’s tolerance at sustained contact, the spire breaking rather than deflecting when the contact was prolonged rather than momentary.
Five feet.
Cyrus’s stone armor met the advance — the crushing pressure of the Stone Layer active in the armor encasing his body, the physical density between him and Klin’s approach.
Klin swung.
A Flame Veil-covered fist at the stone armor — the fire at maximum intensity, the contact between the Veil and the armor surface sustained.
The armor surface scorched at the impact point.
Cyrus felt the hit through the armor — the Stone Layer absorbing the majority of the force but the thermal energy at sustained Veil contact conducting into the stone and heating the interior.
Three feet.
The Core Layer arrived.
The ground beneath the arena shook.
Not a tremor — the specific targeted seismic expression of the Core Layer establishing fully, the arena floor responding to the deepest connection Bedrock Authority could make. The stone under both fighters vibrated — not collapsing, not cracking, the vibration of something enormous expressing itself through a medium smaller than the expression wanted to be.
Cyrus pressed both hands to the stone armor on his own torso.
The Core Layer’s gravity expression — localized gravity inversion around his position, the deepest technique, the gravity around him shifting from the arena’s standard orientation to a compressed field that pulled everything in a five-foot radius toward Cyrus’s center with force that exceeded standard gravity significantly.
Klin at three feet felt it immediately.
The pull — his body being drawn toward Cyrus’s position against his own momentum, the gravity field stronger than his charge’s forward drive, the inversion pulling him in rather than letting him continue through.
His feet left the floor.
Not flying — being pulled, the gravity inversion drawing him toward Cyrus’s center while the arena’s standard gravity pulled him down, the two competing forces lifting his feet from the stone as the Core Layer’s pull exceeded standard downward gravity.
His Flame Veil was still burning at maximum.
At three feet, being pulled toward Cyrus’s position, the Veil’s fire was heading directly toward the stone armor on Cyrus’s body.
Cyrus extended the stone armor forward — his armored forearms reaching out to intercept Klin’s Flame Veil-covered body before the gravity pull could bring the maximum-intensity fire into contact with his chest’s armor breach.
The armored forearms met the Flame Veil.
The fire scorched the forearm armor surfaces — the sustained contact between maximum-intensity Veil and stone armor producing the thermal stress that had been building across the fight, the combined exposure across multiple exchanges accelerating the rate at which the armor surface was conducting heat inward.
But the forearms held.
The gravity inversion held Klin at arm’s length — close enough for the Veil to be in contact with the armored forearms, not close enough for the fire to reach the chest armor’s penetration breach.
Klin looked at Cyrus’s face at arm’s length.
At the stone armor on the forearms conducting heat inward.
At the Core Layer’s gravity holding him in place.
He released the Flame Veil.
All of it — the cloak’s maximum intensity dropping suddenly, the sustained fire cost stopping, the fire around his body going from maximum burn to nothing.
The heat at the forearm contact points dropped.
In the same instant he fired a Crimson Lance from point-blank range — his palm pressed against the armored forearm surface, the Lance firing directly into the stone armor from the inside of the contact point rather than from range.
Point-blank Lance.
The compression force entered the armor from inside the contact — from the position where his palm was pressed directly against the stone, the Lance not needing to penetrate from outside but firing into the armor’s interior from the pressed contact point.
The armor cracked.
Not from thermal stress — from the point-blank Lance’s compression force firing into the armor’s interior structure from inside rather than against its exterior. The force direction wrong for the armor’s design, the stone designed to resist force from outside, the internal point-blank Lance finding the orientation the armor hadn’t been built for.
