Chapter 558 - 658: Townsfolk
"They're just a bunch of lucky unfortunates," Tian Chuzhen said indifferently!
"Lucky unfortunates?" Tian Chu was bewildered upon hearing this. How can one be both lucky and unfortunate?
Tian Chuzhen smiled without explaining, maintaining an aura of a peerless master.
Seeing that Tian Chuzhen was not going to explain, Elder Huo took on the task.
"Do you still remember those people from the tribe that perished on this continent thousands of years ago?" Elder Huo began.
Of course, Tian Chu remembered; it was written in the sect's historical codex. How could he not?
"Of course, I remember! After the people of that tribe died, it caused an upheaval. They opened the gate blocking the evil qi from the extreme western lands, resulting in nearly half of the continent being eroded by the evil qi, leading to devastation!" Tian Chu said.
"Yes, these so-called lucky unfortunates refer to someone who received the legacy of a deceased member of that tribe. But because we lack much evil qi here, he needs to create evil qi to cultivate, and it seems there were some issues with the legacy, leading to some problems in cultivation," Elder Huo explained.
"What kind of problems in cultivation?" Ye Tianfan asked instinctively, but immediately regretted it, knowing he had overstepped, especially given his lower status.
Fortunately, Elder Huo did not mind, knowing Ye Tianfan was a junior they all favored, so Elder Huo smiled as he answered Ye Tianfan's question.
"According to Elder Taichu's investigation, that person directly cultivated away his own body, leaving only a primordial spirit filled with evil qi. Moreover, the evil qi in the primordial spirit continues to dissipate. She can only sustain her fading life by absorbing evil qi faster than it dissipates, but the speed of dissipation will increase until the entire primordial spirit is fully dissolved!"
Seeing that no one blamed him, Ye Tianfan's courage grew. Under Tian Chu's somewhat dazed look, he asked again, "Is he still in Copper Gong Town? Considering the abundance of evil qi there!"
"Copper Gong Town? She's no longer there. She forcefully possessed one of those people. Without doing so, she would have dissipated even faster, though this only temporarily slowed her dissipation," Elder Huo said.
Ye Tianfan stopped speaking at this point, even though he had many questions he wanted to ask. Everything has a limit, and if he exceeded it, those seniors would surely get angry!
"Senior Brother Taichu and other senior brothers, what should we do about the townsfolk? The countless people in Heaven-Reaching Town cannot just be left to transform into demons or become substitutes for them!" Tian Chu said after Ye Tianfan ceased his questions.
Tian Chu had been concerned about the original residents of Heaven-Reaching Town before his arrival, but he suppressed this worry upon entering its vicinity. Once safe, the concern resurfaced.
"Those hostages! Sigh!" Tian Chuzhen, upon hearing this, had an expression of deep worry on his previously calm face. He also longed to save those townsfolk.
Before arriving, Tian Chuzhen had used the Heaven-Viewing Mirror to observe the situation in Heaven-Reaching Town. The results showed that some townsfolk had turned into demons, a small group were used for experiments, another small group became replacements, and the majority became conduits for evil qi.
Apart from those who became demons and experimental subjects, the rest were technically alive but living worse than death, enduring inhuman torture.
Those who became conduits for evil qi were particularly tortured 24/7 while being treated. The torment twisted their minds, which in turn generated the evil qi needed.
The torture was so excruciating even Tian Chuzhen felt pain just watching; imagining the townsfolk's endurance was unimaginable.
"Speak up, Senior Brother Taichu. What should we do about the townsfolk? Are we really not saving them?" Tian Chu pressed, thinking Tian Chuzhen wanted to deal with the lucky unfortunates first before rescuing the townsfolk.
Though having not seen the townsfolk's current state, Tian Chu knew they must not be faring well, likely enduring inhuman tortures.
Tian Chu's sense was accurate; the townsfolk were indeed enduring inhuman tortures.
"We will certainly save them, that's beyond doubt. But there's no way to do so now. We can't act rashly until we've figured out how to solve the problem with those people. Otherwise, the ones getting hurt will be us and the townsfolk, not those evil ones," Elder Huo said directly. "If there were fewer people involved, we could attack with force, but there are just too many lives at stake!"
"Elder Huo!" Tian Chuzhen frowned upon hearing this and looked at Elder Huo, who had turned to him. "Regardless of the number of people, we must rescue them. We can't ignore them because of numbers. Even if only one townsfolk is threatened, we should do our utmost to rescue them."
After hearing this, Elder Huo fell silent, for his bottom line differed from others. Elder Huo wouldn't sacrifice ten people to save one.
"How terrifying, Elder Taichu and Elder Huo are about to fight!" Old Monkey grinned as he watched the drama unfold.
"Shut up, Old Monkey!" Elder Huo said somberly, glaring at Old Monkey. He was aware his bottom line differed from theirs, hence he tried to avoid discussions on this topic, but today he couldn't help being drawn into it.
In actuality, Tian Chuzhen's bottom line wasn't quite as he stated. If only one townsfolk was in trouble, they'd rescue them but not at the cost of their own lives.
Moreover, Tian Chuzhen also said they'd do their best. If even their best efforts couldn't rescue them, they'd give up. After all, Tian Chuzhen wasn't a hot-headed youth; he was the leader of a sect and had to consider the safety of his disciples, not just his reputation.
The major difference between someone like Tian Chuzhen and Elder Huo is that the former would try and make an effort, whereas the latter would abandon the cause after weighing the pros and cons.
