Chapter 485 - 458: Power and Restraint
Tang Jinglun looked at his older brother with some surprise; he hadn’t received any news of these matters beforehand.
Tang Jingwei’s public disclosure was not just to reassure everyone, but also to showcase his own official connections, while subtly telling everyone that his younger brother was far less skilled than he was.
Tang Jingwei didn’t spare his brother a glance and said calmly, "I believe Jinglun has the ability to handle Huayuan’s crisis and lead Huayuan out of its predicament. I hope everyone gives him more confidence, more time, and more room to grow."
Everyone heard that Tang Jingwei’s words, while outwardly supporting Tang Jinglun, were actually mocking him for his lack of maturity. Jinglun felt indignant but didn’t dare to disagree openly.
After the meeting adjourned, Tang Jingwei did not leave immediately, and Jinglun understood, remaining behind until it was just the two of them in the conference room.
Tang Jinglun got up, went to his brother’s side, and refilled his thermos cup with hot water.
Tang Jingwei asked, with a dual meaning, "Has it cooled down?"
Tang Jinglun replied, "I’ve added hot water."
Tang Jingwei said, "The tea leaves inside have lost their flavor; it’s better to throw them out and start fresh."
Tang Jinglun certainly understood what his elder brother was implying. He nodded, picked up his brother’s teacup, emptied it, and replaced the tea leaves.
He respectfully placed the freshly made tea in front of Tang Jingwei, who sniffed the tea aroma and whispered, "The same cup, same water, and same tea leaves, yet different people brewing yields entirely different flavors. Why do you think that is?"
Tang Jinglun replied, "It might be due to the mindset," slyly suggesting that it was entirely his brother’s own doing.
Tang Jingwei laughed, "You’re increasingly seeing things from all angles; I found it was right to leave Huayuan to you."
Tang Jinglun smiled but said nothing. No matter how displeased his brother was with him, he wouldn’t replace him now. No one was willing to step up to manage this mess at least until Huayuan Group completed its debt restructuring.
Tang Jingwei said, "As the CEO of Huayuan Group, you’re focusing excessively on the development of Health. Everyone chose you for this position to oversee the whole picture, not just to develop a part. Health alone won’t save Huayuan."
Tang Jinglun dared not refute, knowing that if Huayuan’s debt crisis continued to worsen, everyone would eventually falter. At this moment, if his brother didn’t step in to mediate, he would struggle to gain official support, although he believed his brother wouldn’t let things continue unchecked. Yet, for now, he had to relent: "Brother, my perspective is still too narrow."
Tang Jingwei said, "Let Zhao Feiyang take responsibility for Health."
Tang Jinglun frowned. His brother was negating all his efforts in Health, thereby narrowing his power.
Tang Jinglun felt a bit unwilling, "Brother, Zhao Feiyang indeed has capabilities, but if given too much power, he might become hard to control."
Tang Jingwei said, "Jiayue Department Store can add two more directors; I think Pei Lin and Tianyi are suitable."
Tang Jinglun pressed his lips together. In terms of controlling Zhao Feiyang, his brother and he were no different, both using Pei Lin to check Zhao Feiyang. In other words, Pei Lin was Zhao Feiyang’s weakness.
Tang Jinglun didn’t hold shares in Jiayue Department Store, and while Huayuan Group and Jiayue Department Store’s real owner was Tang Jingwei, the latter had a much better operation. Bringing Pei Lin into the board was to better control Zhao Feiyang, and allowing Tang Tianyi on Jiayue’s board was for future succession planning.
Tang Jinglun couldn’t interfere with his brother’s decisions and said softly, "Brother, Dongzhou is pushing hard; several projects are awaiting funds. Your thoughts..."
Tang Jingwei responded, "Aren’t you aware of Huayuan’s situation? Currently, not to mention there’s no money, even if there were, it would be seized by the banks. However, I’ve thought of a plan. Jiayue Department Store can make an asset exchange with Huayuan Group, using equity swap to inject capital into Changxing."
Tang Jinglun stared wide-eyed at his brother, finally understanding his brother’s strategy. He was shifting high-quality assets to Jiayue Department Store through asset exchange, then transferring Jiayue’s marginal or loss-making properties to Huayuan, further worsening Huayuan’s financial situation.
Tang Jinglun didn’t believe his brother’s idea would be approved, realizing that if he could see through it, the experts at Zhongjiao Exchange surely could as well.
On the twenty-seventh of the twelfth lunar month, Tang Jinglun specifically went to Dongzhou to personally organize and hold the end-of-year summary meeting of Huanyan Health.
This meeting first announced the new leadership team, and after much turmoil, Huanyan Health returned to its starting point.
The company’s two-pronged policy remained unchanged, but it clearly established Zhao Feiyang’s leadership position at Huayuan Medical Group, ending Tang Jinglun’s earlier plan to separate Huanyan Health.
The specific management work of Huanyan Health was entrusted to Pei Lin.
This meant that while Zhao Feiyang gained higher authority, he also had to accept restrictions.
Huanyan Health has newly appointed a vice president named Wu Fajun. Although his educational background is not impressive, his work capabilities are exceptional. The management objectives and development plans he drafted were strongly recommended by Pei Lin, and Zhao Feiyang also considered Wu Fajun to be a rare talent after reviewing them.
More importantly, this person was not appointed by the group, making him relatively easier to control.
The Young Master of Huayuan, Tang Tianyi, not only became the new director of Jiayue Department Store but also took on an additional position. He has been assigned to Changxing as the Deputy Director of Changxing Hospital, under the pretense of learning and gaining experience by staying close to Zhao Feiyang. Zhao Feiyang found this arrangement rather troublesome but couldn’t refuse it.
Tang Jinglun stated at the meeting that his focus will be shifting to the group’s overall operations, with Zhao Feiyang taking the lead on the healthcare business.
He also announced another significant decision from the headquarters: Pei Lin has been nominated as a director of Jiayue Department Store.
This news even caught Zhao Feiyang by surprise. The position of director at Jiayue Department Store was originally promised to him by Tang Jingwei, but it ultimately fell to his wife.
Though Zhao Feiyang and Pei Lin are family, their relationship hasn’t reached the level of complete trust. Zhao Feiyang realized that Pei Lin is like a sword hanging over his head, and the Tang Brothers’ approach to employing him is no exception; they want him to contribute without giving him their full trust.
The newly appointed General Manager of Huanyan Health, Pei Lin, spoke after Tang Jinglun. She first expressed her gratitude to the group’s top executives and directors for their trust, then thanked all her colleagues at Huanyan Health, but notably did not thank her husband Zhao Feiyang. Mentioning Zhao Feiyang in such a setting could be seen as unwise, as everyone was aware of their relationship and believed Pei Lin’s position was entirely because of Zhao Feiyang.
The senior management from Changxing who were invited to attend the meeting mostly felt disdainful. They all thought Pei Lin was not deserving of her position and that Zhao Feiyang was being blatantly shameless by creating a family-run business.
Xu Chunliang also received a notification to attend the meeting today. Seeing the spirited Pei Lin, he was somewhat impressed; this woman has an extraordinary psychological resilience.
Just a couple of days ago, she was tearfully begging him for help. Now, she has suddenly transformed into the general manager of Huanyan Health and even became a director of Jiayue Department Store. Didn’t she say she would withdraw completely from Changxing for Zhao Feiyang’s sake? Instead of withdrawing, she has become even more involved.
Xu Chunliang glanced at Zhao Feiyang, noticing his unusually calm demeanor. He expected Zhao Feiyang to be quite upset, yet despite being the head of Huayuan Medical Group, Pei Lin had already made her way into Jiayue Department Store’s board.
Xu Chunliang pondered whether this couple was playing a coordinated game with him to reap benefits, a scenario not uncommon in reality.
Based on the current situation, with Yang Mufeng’s murder, Pei Lin seems to be the biggest beneficiary. Could she be involved in this matter?
After the meeting ended, Tang Jinglun was the first to leave the conference room.
Zhao Feiyang saw him to his car. Tang Jinglun shook hands with Zhao Feiyang and said, "Feiyang, from now on, I’ll leave matters here in your hands."
Zhao Feiyang replied, "Thank you, President Tang, for your trust." Deep down, he understood that they never truly trusted him.
Tang Jinglun said, "My brother nominated two people: Tianyi and Pei Lin. I originally thought it was you. My brother said your position was too sensitive."
Zhao Feiyang smiled, "I now only want to manage Changxing well and not let everyone down."
Tang Jinglun nodded, "In the future, discuss matters with Pei Lin more. I have other things to do, so I’ll be going." Without lingering, he got into the car.
As Zhao Feiyang watched him leave, his smile gradually disappeared. What did Tang Jinglun mean by his last sentence? Did it imply that he needed to report to Pei Lin on his actions?
Pei Lin kept the leadership team of Huanyan Health behind for a small meeting, where she formally introduced the company’s new vice president, Wu Fajun.
Everyone applauded in welcome, and Wu Fajun bowed to everyone, saying with a smile, "I am new here and look forward to learning a lot from all you seniors." He handed out his business card to everyone and then extended an invitation. He had reserved a table at Cuihu Chunxiao for tonight, inviting everyone to gather informally before the holidays to better acquaint themselves.
Pei Lin supported the idea, insisting everyone must attend and mentioning that anyone who didn’t attend would have their holiday bonuses deducted.
As Xu Chunliang was about to leave, Pei Lin asked him to come to her office.
Once inside her office, Pei Lin handed him a prepared red envelope.
Xu Chunliang laughed, "What’s this? A hush money?"
Pei Lin’s heart skipped a beat, but her expression remained steady. She softly replied, "Holiday bonus, our entire team receives one."
Xu Chunliang accepted the money with peace of mind, estimating it was about ten thousand based on its thickness.
Pei Lin said, "I have revoked all penalties against you, according to the system, you should return to work tomorrow."
