Chapter 65: Plan
Su Zimai kept her head down, not saying a word for a long time.
The store was still full of clinking glasses and cheerful chatter. The guests wore the joy of an all-night party after getting off work, while only the two at the bar remained frozen in silence like a still from a movie. The waiter had stopped bringing dishes; plenty of sushi still sat untouched on the table.
Ke Qirui raised her defined right hand to prop up her cheek and asked sideways, "You full?"
"Yeah."
"You okay?"
"I'm fine... we're meeting Blue Arc in a few days. If he really is my brother, I’ll definitely recognize him." Su Zimai's voice was a little hoarse.
"Not necessarily." Ke Qirui shook her head. "Blue Arc usually wears a helmet while working with the Association, and it comes with a voice changer. After playing that role for a few years, he's gotten pretty good at it. Even if you saw him in person, it’d be hard to link him to your brother."
Su Zimai asked in a low voice, "Then what do we do?"
Ke Qirui thought for a moment, then suggested, "Before the auction starts, let’s try to meet with your second brother again. Afterward, I’ll have Xu Sanyan tail him. Sanyan’s the best at tracking in our team—she rarely messes up."
She let out a low chuckle. "But if your brother really is Blue Arc, with his skills he’ll definitely notice Sanyan following him. Once he catches her, you can just jump out and do the whole dramatic sibling reveal." "Alright... let’s go with that," Su Zimai said, slumping in her seat like even talking was exhausting.
Ke Qirui nodded and suddenly added, "Oh, right. For the mission, I’ve prepared a face mask and a voice changer for you."
"Is that really necessary?"
Su Zimai looked up at her.
"Absolutely. You can’t afford to let your guard down during the operation. The White Crow Brigade is a bunch of evil scum. If they saw your face, your family might be targeted for revenge... not to mention your family just so happens to be vacationing in Japan, so better safe than sorry."
"Alright, then Captain, don’t you need a disguise too?"
"I don’t have family. Except for the Chairman who adopted me."
Ke Qirui smirked, "The Chairman’s health is so bad, if nothing unexpected happens, he’ll probably kick the bucket in a year or so... he’s lived long enough anyway. If the White Crow Brigade really comes knocking, maybe those villains will do him the favor of sending him off."
Su Zimai rolled her eyes. Captain, you're way too ‘filial.’ Is that really how you treat your adoptive guardian?
She asked, "Sanyan and Zhengquan haven’t arrived in Japan yet?"
"They’re tied up with things back home, arriving a bit late. Should be here in the next couple days... once they arrive, we’ll settle your brother’s situation first, then formally meet with the yakuza."
Ke Qirui said as she took a pipe from her trench coat pocket, intending to take a puff, but was interrupted by the chef knocking the cutting board with a knife. She raised an eyebrow, gave an awkward grin, and remembered the restaurant was non-smoking, so she put the pipe away.
Su Zimai nodded. "This mission’s tough. If we can pull it off, the Association will give us a serious boost in ratings. The ‘Ghost Train Brigade’ could officially level up to a third-tier Exorcist squad."
Ke Qirui raised a hand and patted her head. "Just do your job well—everything else is a bonus."
"Okay," Su Zimai said. "Then once Sanyan arrives in Tokyo, I’ll ask my brother out to meet." She paused. "But he’s so lazy, it’s gonna be hard getting him to come out."
"Then ask in advance? Better chance of success that way."
"True... he can dodge me for a while, but not forever. I’ll get him to come out eventually."
Su Zimai took a deep breath, pulled her phone from the pocket of her jumpsuit with determination, eyes drooping as she opened her WeChat chat screen.
Staring at Gu Wenyu’s profile photo—a blue hedgehog in running shoes: Sonic—her finger hesitated for a moment.
For some reason... Su Zimai almost hoped Gu Wenyu would just stay holed up in that hotel room forever and never come out. But in the end, she still moved her finger, typed one word at a time in the message box, and hit send.
[Su Zimai: Big bro, can we meet up in a couple days?]
...
...
At the same time, elsewhere in Tokyo.
Roppongi Grand Hotel, fourth floor. Ji Minghuan was walking down the dimly lit hotel hallway. He looked up from his phone screen and saw Gu Qiye leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed, idly playing with his phone as he waited.
"Had fun with your friend?" Gu Qiye asked while handing over the room card from the adjacent room.
"Yeah, she’s loaded. Total sugar mommy. We ordered a ton of food—couldn’t even finish it."
Giving a half-hearted reply, Ji Minghuan took the room card from his older brother, glanced at the number, and scanned the hallway until he found room 4105.
The three of them were in neighboring rooms: Blue Arc on the left, Black Cocoon in the middle, Ghost Bell on the right... maybe Gu Qiye did that on purpose—putting Black Cocoon right between Blue Arc and Ghost Bell.
Not sure what the other two thought, but Black Cocoon was definitely satisfied. He figured with Binding Restraints pressed against the walls on both sides, he could easily monitor what his brother and dad were up to—super convenient.
Right now, Gu Zhuo’an’s room was silent—not a sound, probably already asleep.
"Good. Get some rest," Gu Qiye smiled.
"Okay."
Ji Minghuan tapped the keycard on the door handle sensor. Beep—the door unlocked.
He slotted the card into the power slot, took a shower, then collapsed on the hotel bed wrapped in a towel. Too lazy to even change clothes, he lay there motionless, chin on the pillow, thinking:
"Need to move my sister’s main quest along before the auction starts. Try to get ‘Black Cocoon’ to work with her... would’ve been easier if the target were Ke Qirui. But no, it had to be my irrational sister."
"But those two are like conjoined twins—glued together 24/7. When I show up, even if Su Zimai doesn’t listen, Ke Qirui will get her to calm down."
"In that case, it might actually be possible to talk to her peacefully without a fight."
Just then, the phone by his pillow buzzed with a text.
He used Binding Restraints to pull the phone from under the covers and held it up to read the message.
[Su Zimai: Big bro, can we meet up in a couple days?]
[Gu Wenyu: What’s this? Trying to scam me into a free meal?]
[Su Zimai: Well, thing is… Miss Ke Qirui… she… she… she fell in love with you at first sight.]
Ji Minghuan’s eye twitched. That message hit him as hard as the one Gu Qiye sent him before: "You’re my dad?"
Crap… did I just get roped into a lesbian marriage scam?
Ji Minghuan, being who he is, instantly saw through the trick. “Ke Qirui must be trying to marry into our family just to get close to my sister, huh?”
He lifted his head from the pillow.
Just thinking about how one room ahead lay a terrifying Clocktower man, and behind him a terrifying Lightning man, Ji Minghuan let out a long sigh for Ke Qirui’s future:
"So many flowers in the world, why fixate on my sister? This road leads straight to hell."
If Ke Qirui really did marry into their family, the terror she’d experience would probably rival that of an otaku gleefully booting up what he thought was a fluffy dating sim, only to discover he’d downloaded a hell-difficulty spy thriller.
With that in mind—for everyone’s sake—Ji Minghuan googled “how to prevent a lesbian marriage scam.”
Clearly lacking experience in this area, he stared at the screen where it said in bold text:
“In cases of lesbian marriage scams, to avoid all adverse consequences and malicious retaliation, the best approach is—
fight poison with poison.”
Ji Minghuan expressionlessly read those four words out loud, nodded in agreement, and exited Su Zimai’s chat.
He pulled up Ke Qirui’s contact and sent a message.
[Gu Wenyu: Miss, I’m gay.]
Soon, she replied.
[Ke Qirui: ?]
