Chapter 51: The Great Thieves
July 12th, 7:00 a.m., Lijing, China.
The first rays of morning light slipped through the curtains and spilled across Ji Minghuan’s face. He slowly woke up, rolled over, and fell off the bed onto the tatami.
Not long after, a hand suddenly reached onto the bed and groped around under the blanket for the remote control. With a “beep,” the air conditioner shut off.
He had set the temperature too low last night, and the cold air made him sneeze. If it weren’t for the nonstop chirping of summer cicadas in the trees, he might have mistaken it for winter.
After washing his face and brushing his teeth in the washroom, Ji Minghuan wandered around the house for a bit. It was still early in the morning, but there was no sign of Gu Qiye anywhere. Probably Lijing’s celebrity Reality-altering Esper, Blue Arc, had gotten another emergency mission alert.
Ji Minghuan tilted his head, wondering if his busy brother was once again dealing with that one certain troublemaker whose “family name is Ghost, first name Bell,” and then he headed up to the third floor and knocked on the door.
When there was no response from Dad’s room either, he pressed his Binding Restraints to the doorframe and channeled his senses through the wood. The room was empty—no sign of Gu Zhuo’an either.
“They both got up this early… don’t tell me they’re already out there brawling again?”
Ji Minghuan muttered softly, walked downstairs, and entered the living room on the first floor.
Taking over the soft sofa, he grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. The news anchor was broadcasting a breaking story: “At 7:15 this morning, Lijing Third Bank was violently robbed by Superhuman criminals. Several security guards were injured or killed in the encounter. Currently, A-rank Reality-altering Espers ‘Blue Arc’ and ‘Silver Swallow’ are pursuing the Superhuman criminals involved in the city—‘Flying Ant’ and ‘Da Zhonghou’. These two are internationally notorious thieves. Previously, museums in Japan, France, and several other countries have been…”
Ji Minghuan sat up from the back of the sofa, raising an eyebrow: “Lijing Third Bank? That’s right near my place… If I hurry over, I might still catch the action.”
...
...
At the same time, on the other side of Lijing City—
Screams rang out across the plaza. The police had formed a barricade with patrol cars to keep civilians back.
Blue Arc stood at the base of a skyscraper, looking up. Under the sunlight, a giant six-meter-tall gorilla was climbing up the building, its massive limbs smashing through layer after layer of glass curtain wall, shards raining down on the city like a storm.
A huge pack was slung over its back, and banknotes flew from it nonstop. The strong wind whipped through the gorilla’s fur, making it look especially savage—like a character drawn with exaggerated thick lines from a comic book.
“Confirmed: Dragon-level Esper—‘Da Zhonghou’.” Information on the criminal appeared in Blue Arc’s lenses.
The next second, Blue Arc shot up the side of the building like a bolt of lightning. All the bystanders saw was a streak of deep-blue electricity tearing toward the sky—even the morning light seemed to dim for a second.
No matter how fast the gorilla climbed, it couldn’t outrun lightning. In just one second, Blue Arc was already positioned slightly above it, standing on the building’s surface like a ninja from the movies, electric arcs screeching through the air around him.
A frontal clash with such a massive creature clearly wasn’t a wise choice.
He crouched slightly, pressing his right hand to the glass curtain wall. Deep blue arcs surged from his fingers and rapidly formed a snaking net that spread wildly across the surface.
The gorilla’s limbs were instantly entangled by the electric net. Its body spasmed uncontrollably, and it roared as it plummeted toward the ground.
With a ripping sound, the sack full of money tore open mid-air, unleashing a rain of bills. People below, half afraid of being crushed by the falling beast and half tempted by the storm of cash, pushed toward the police barricade, wanting to catch the money fluttering from the sky.
The gorilla crashed into the ground, forming a deep pit. Its body began to shrink, transforming back into a ragged, skinny young man.
He lay on his side in the crater, unconscious, unable to say a word.
Blue Arc spoke into his helmet's built-in communicator: “Da Zhonghou is down. Silver Swallow, how’s your side?”
Da Zhonghou and Flying Ant were notorious international thieves.
One of them could transform into a massive gorilla, breaking through bank defenses and smashing vault doors. The other could shrink down to the size of a thumb, grow wings, and look just like a flying ant. She usually scouted out banks, auction houses, and museums, then directed Da Zhonghou’s actions.
The pair, who had never failed, recently got married. They threw a globe-spanning wedding, traveling through countries like Japan, France, the U.S., and the U.K.
In Paris, they stole from BNP Bank, then climbed the Eiffel Tower, where Flying Ant, wearing a wedding dress, scattered bills across the city as if mocking its wealth and indulgence.
Later in Japan, after stealing from the Tokyo National Museum, they climbed to the top of Tokyo Tower and used a spotlight with a “Flying Ant & Gorilla” emblem to light up the sky—declaring to the city they had succeeded.
The stunt enraged all of Japan, but the next day, the couple had already left Tokyo. No one knew where they’d gone.
Not just Japan—the leadership of several major nations were infuriated by this thieving couple. Some even proposed dispatching Rainbow Wing to capture them, though that seemed like overkill.
Recently, the couple arrived in China and even brazenly posted their travel vlogs online, drawing the authorities’ attention.
As luck would have it, during their very first heist, they ran into one of Lijing’s top operatives—Reality-altering Esper Blue Arc. If they’d delayed just one more day, Gu Qiye would’ve already been “vacationing” in Japan.
And just like that, one of the two international criminals, the brazen Dragon-level Esper Da Zhonghou, was captured effortlessly.
“Silver Swallow, do you copy?” Blue Arc asked again.
Soon, a frustrated voice came through the headset—Reality-altering Esper Silver Swallow: “That damn fly’s too fast and too small. I can’t find her at all!”
“Then forget it... Flying Ant’s ability is perfect for escape anyway,” Blue Arc said calmly.
“She came to our turf to cause trouble—we can’t just let her get away... Wait, that person is—” Silver Swallow suddenly paused.
“Who did you see?” Blue Arc frowned.
“Black Cocoon,” Silver Swallow said.
Hearing that name, Blue Arc’s heart skipped a beat. He immediately changed his tone:
“I’m on my way.”
With that, his body turned into a streak of lightning and bolted toward the other side of the city. The gale he stirred swept electric arcs through every street, alley, and skyscraper.
