Chapter 32: The World
"Since you don't like it, I'll switch to another style."
The Instructor smiled nonchalantly.
He reorganized his words and said, "Anecdote Envoys usually don't appear in market cities. Their hideout is inside the belly of a whale called 'Chikanao.' Hidden within the whale’s stomach is a vast world, which we generally refer to as—the 'Whale’s Garden'."
Seeing Ji Minghuan absentmindedly drawing circles on the table without speaking, he continued,
"Just from the whale’s size alone, you could never guess how vast the world inside it is. The Whale’s Garden is filled with massive constructions: cities on the sea, royal palaces, and the royalty of the Anecdote Envoys resides inside these palaces."
Ji Minghuan drooped his eyelids, looking like he was about to fall asleep.
He mumbled, "I don't care whether they live inside a whale or a shark. Can you first explain what an Anecdote Envoy actually is and what special powers they have?"
The Instructor said blandly, "Each Anecdote Envoy awakens at a certain age and gains their own 'Anecdote Codex.' The Anecdote Codex helps them locate nearby Anecdote Secret Realms... Within the secret realms are hidden Anecdote Fragments. If they can conquer the Anecdote through their own strength, they can obtain the corresponding Anecdote Fragment."
He adjusted his glasses and went on, "Through the Codex, they can activate the lingering Anecdote power within the fragments. That's how they fight."
"See, wouldn’t it have been better to start with the good stuff?" "Couldn't be helped. I was afraid you’d fall asleep."
Ji Minghuan rested his chin on his folded arms, slumping onto the table like a puddle of mud.
He casually asked, "So then... what's the point of picking up these Anecdote Fragments like they’re trash?"
"Anecdote Fragments are usually stored inside the Anecdote Codex. Depending on their strength, the fragments are classified into four levels: Myth-grade Anecdote, Epoch-grade Anecdote, Popular-grade Anecdote, and Common-grade Anecdote."
The Instructor paused, "The most powerful among them is the 'Myth-grade Anecdote.' As the name suggests, they're closely tied to myths from around the world. In recorded history, Myth-grade Anecdote Fragments have been extremely rare. Only fragments from a few deities have ever appeared: Zeus, the Eight-Headed Serpent, Ra the Sun God, Hades the King of the Underworld..."
"Oh, oh, what about the next level down, the 'Epoch-grade' Anecdotes?"
"Most of the Epoch-grade names should sound familiar to you: 'Santa Claus,' 'Titanic,' 'Hyakki Yagyō'... These Anecdotes fall under the Epoch-grade category. Currently, the strongest Anecdote Envoys are the ones who possess Epoch-grade Anecdote Fragments. Each one of them holds the power to awaken history itself."
Ji Minghuan raised an eyebrow, looking a bit interested.
He said, "Let’s not talk about familiar ones like 'Santa Claus' or 'Hyakki Yagyō' for now. But isn't the 'Titanic' just that ship that sank in the Atlantic in 1912? I remember it was later made into a romance movie?"
The Instructor nodded, "Yes. After being passed down by word of mouth, these events became Anecdotes. And wherever there are Anecdotes, there will be fragments left behind. Anecdote Envoys can extract power from these fragments... To put it bluntly, if an Anecdote Envoy holds a Myth-grade Anecdote Fragment, it’s as if they've inherited part of an ancient deity’s power. Destroying a country would only be a matter of time."
"Hearing that, aren’t these Anecdote Envoys even more dangerous than me?"
"First of all, very few Anecdote Envoys have ever conquered a Myth-grade Anecdote. Secondly... there's a fundamental difference between having the power to destroy a country and having the power to destroy the world."
Ji Minghuan rolled his eyes, "So basically, I'm a cursed lone star."
"I hope you understand, we're here to help you."
Saying this, the Instructor crossed his hands, his voice turning serious, "Only by understanding how your Esper ability works can you have a chance to leave here. Think of it like this—you’re a nuclear bomb, and we need to find the 'launch' switch inside you. If we can't find the switch, we'll have no choice but to seal you away. Otherwise, if you were to suddenly detonate while walking down the street one day, it could kill thousands, all of whom are innocent."
As he said this, his tone suddenly softened, becoming much gentler, "But if we find the switch, it's a completely different story. Something controllable and something uncontrollable are two entirely different things."
"You make it sound like a nuclear bomb with a switch has the right to walk around the streets."
"At least it would have a chance... better than being locked up here forever, right?"
Ji Minghuan sighed, "Even if you put it like that, I have no idea where that 'switch' is."
"That's why our job is to waste time with you here until we figure out exactly where that 'switch' is. If you refuse to cooperate, honestly, we don’t have a particularly good solution either."
The Instructor replied calmly and unhurriedly.
"Who exactly are the 'we' you keep talking about? I still don't know where you people come from."
"That has to stay a secret for now."
"You're not from the Reality-altering Esper Association?" Ji Minghuan probed.
"Incorrect... Our work is far more dangerous and noble than the Reality-altering Esper Association. Likewise, we don't belong to the Anecdote Envoys or the Exorcists either."
Seeing Ji Minghuan stay silent and just lower his head in thought, the Instructor slowly shifted the topic,
"Where were we? Oh right... that's enough about the Anecdote Envoys."
【A series of key intelligence related to the "Anecdote Envoy world-building" has been obtained.】
【The world-building development progress for the "Anecdote Envoy" branch has changed: 1% → 30% (Due to the increase in development progress, the probability of generating higher-potential Anecdote Envoy characters during the "Character Creation" stage will also rise accordingly.)】
Ji Minghuan glanced at the text on the panel and thought, "Whoa... it jumped straight to 30%. Looks like the Instructor wasn’t bullsh*tting me."
He was already itching to create an "Anecdote Envoy" character and test it out. Although there were only two days left, the Black Cocoon Esper character that played with Binding Restraints was starting to bore him.
So Ji Minghuan looked up at the Instructor and tried to squeeze more information out of him,
"Since you finished talking about Anecdote Envoys, what about the Exorcists?"
