Chapter 121: Spider Man
“So now you can only rely on my worthless self. Besides supplying cola and sensing the surroundings, you can do nothing.”
Lin Ye summed up.
“You’re not wrong, but I won’t be worthless forever. As the story progresses, I’ll adapt to this place more. By then I’ll be able to do things that break the rules — it’s an early investment, guaranteed to pay off,” Mia said confidently.
“Can’t you fight using runes?”
Lin Ye felt something was off.
“No. My abilities basically only work in a hospital environment. Unless you teach me the runes, but mental contact is too dangerous. I don’t want to get intertwined with you,” Mia explained.
“I don’t either. Tell me what’s inside.”
The ancient, dilapidated church stood directly ahead. Calling it a church felt inadequate; it looked more like some ancient structure associated with deities.
Lin Ye couldn’t sense inside the church. Some sort of mental field isolated the interior from the outside.
“There are a lot of low-tier spider-like creatures inside. Only one mid-tier creature. Its spiritual energy core is right in the center of the chest, and it has two special mutation organs: a sac in the abdomen and the first right forelimb. As for what those organs do specifically, I can’t read them,” Mia easily breached the church’s mental field and relayed what she perceived to Lin Ye. “I take back calling you worthless.”
Lin Ye pushed open the church door, glanced inside, then shut it quickly.
The interior was a nest for some kind of spider creature—white webs and small spider nests were everywhere, and unknown rune structures existed on those webs.
Fighting a mid-tier spiritual energy creature in an environment like that was suicide.
“Find another place. I can’t handle this here,” Lin Ye said decisively.
“But the fourth-tier creature inside is about to come out. Do you want to discuss this in front of it?” Mia pointed at the church door.
“Oh? It’s coming out? Then there’s no need to find somewhere else.”
Lin Ye drew the Peace pistol and backed up a short distance with Mia.
Unless the power gap was enormous, no one would choose to fight inside the enemy’s lair. But when the enemy comes out on its own, that’s another matter.
Lin Ye concentrated on the church door. Rustling, dense crawling sounds came from within. The door opened, and a flood of spider monsters with sharp legs and heads covered in eyes poured out.
Most of the spider monsters were impaled and killed from all directions by spiritual energy blades of various shapes, gray-green ichor splattering everywhere.
Bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang!
Lin Ye pulled out a shotgun to deal with the low-tier spider monsters that had avoided the stabs from behind.
The spider monsters were excellent jumpers; they leapt in every direction and bounded at Lin Ye from all angles.
Lin Ye fired while retreating. Those spiders were nothing special, but he had to focus all his attention on the mid-tier humanoid creature standing at the church entrance.
It was a half-human, half-spider monster—its main body human, but covered with spikes and legs. Its head resembled the spider monsters, with two compound eyes of red and black fused, taking up half its head.
The creature did not immediately attack Lin Ye, nor did it step out of the church’s threshold.
That made Lin Ye unwilling to go all out; he had to back away step by step from the church.
Just as Lin Ye was about to give up on using the church as a stronghold, the spider man moved.
It launched itself to Lin Ye’s flank in an instant, spraying white silk like sharp swords as it propelled.
The white silk easily pierced the mutated spiritual energy shield and sealed off Lin Ye’s escape route.
Bang!
Lin Ye didn’t retreat. He raised his gun and shredded the silk in front of him, firing as he charged toward the spider man. The creature’s launch speed was so fast he couldn’t be confident of hitting it at a mid-range.
Only at extremely close range did Lin Ye have a chance to hit the spider man with the Peace pistol.
The spider man hadn’t expected Lin Ye to charge it, which caused a momentary hesitation. Lin Ye was only third-tier while it was a fourth-tier creature—there was no reason for it to retreat.
Yet it did fall back. Lin Ye’s unhesitating approach was more intimidating than any words.
The spider man launched itself to the side-rear while continuing to spray silk at Lin Ye. If even one strand hit, it could deal with Lin Ye easily.
Seeing the spider man’s motion, Lin Ye began predicting its landing spot before it struck and activated every acceleration item and rune he had.
Using skewed, multi-layered mutated spiritual energy shields to split the silk, Lin Ye forced a gap through the dense strands and slipped through that fissure to reach a position ahead of the spider man.
At that moment the spider man had just landed, and the Peace pistol was already aimed at the exact center of its chest.
The distance between the muzzle and that spot was less than three meters.
Bang bang bang bang bang bang!
Lin Ye emptied the magazine. Before arriving at the church, he had been injecting spiritual energy into the bullets as long as it didn’t affect his condition. There were six rounds in the gun.
The spider man, having just landed, couldn’t dodge and could only raise its forelimb to block the bullets. Frenzied compressed spiritual energy detonated repeatedly in front of it, blowing its mutated forelimb to pieces and destroying over half its body.
Lin Ye closed in, using the Heavy Blow technique to stab full force toward the spider man’s spiritual energy core.
The spider man tried to resist. Its abdominal mutation organ exploded, spraying massive amounts of silk that wrapped around Lin Ye.
Lin Ye ignored the silk. His blade shattered the spider man’s spiritual energy core; the Severing rune guided the chaotic energy to tear apart the rest of the spider man’s body.
A large amount of silk plunged into Lin Ye, winding tightly inside and outside his body, leaving him unable to move.
Lin Ye looked hopefully at Mia and found her bound to the ground by silk after stepping on it; she could only wriggle and crawl.
‘Worthless!’
Unable to speak, Lin Ye had to retract his earlier judgment in his mind. He vowed that from now on he would choose reliable teammates when he went on trips.
A swarm of spider monsters lunged at Lin Ye. He could only outline runes with mental energy to fight back. Through the spiritual energy shield and the spiritual energy blade, Lin Ye fought with everything he had and barely dealt with the nearby spider monsters.
But the commotion from the earlier fight attracted a large number of mutation creatures rapidly approaching them.
This time Lin Ye was truly helpless. His remaining spiritual energy was low; if he killed another wave of mutated creatures, he would exhaust his energy and could only wait for death.
As Lin Ye pondered what to do, he sensed a team approaching the church.
“What happened here?”
“Someone killed the monsters inside the church.”
“That’s Heath’s hunting rifle!”
“Aren’t those two bound the Heath and his lover?”
“It really is them. As expected of Heath—this old man is still so brave.”
“He shouldn’t have retired.”
“Hurry, bring them inside. There might still be a chance.”
