Chapter 627: Grand Celebrations
The wooden door swung open before he could even answer.
Kira and Zeyra stood in the doorway, their faces bright and thoroughly refreshed.
Both had washed up and changed out of their heavy battle gear; Kira wore a soft forest-green tunic that complemented her bright blue eyes, her hair were tied into a neat, high braid that showed the graceful curve of her neck.
Zeyra, standing beside her with a hand propped on her hip, wore a fitted, sleeveless dark-leather vest over a crimson tunic, her long black hair left loose to fall over her shoulders.
She had traded her twin combat daggers for a pair of polished utility knives at her belt, her sharp features were softened by a relaxed, radiant smile.
"Still sitting in the dark?" Zeyra teased, a playful smirk curving her lips. "The whole tribe is already dancing, and you’re hiding up here like an old hermit."
Kira stepped inside, naturally taking Sol’s arm and pulling him up from the platform with an excited laugh. "Come on, Sol! Mother has already opened up all the reserved food, the grand meat pits are lit. You can’t miss this."
Sol let out a quiet, raspy chuckle, shaking his head. "Alright, lead the way."
Stepping out of the dwelling, the settlement had already transformed into a massive, living carnival of light, music, and smoke.
The sun had set, replaced by towering bonfires that turned the central plaza as bright as midday. The heavy, mouthwatering scent of roasting boar, spiced whole oxen, and sweet charred tubers hung thick in the cool mountain air.
Long timber tables were groaning under the weight of wooden platters piled high with smoked venison, dried mountain berries, and large clay jugs of sweet fermented fruits.
Sol, Kira, and Zeyra walked side-by-side through the vibrant walkways.
Everywhere they went, the atmosphere was filled with unrestrained joy. Children ran past in packs, laughing and chasing each other with wooden practice sticks.
Groups of warriors sat around the smaller fire pits, loudly recounting the tales of the infiltration and the sudden surrender of the Marauders, clinking heavy wooden tankards together in celebratory toasts.
Whenever Sol passed by a table, the warriors would stand up and offer a respectful fist to their chests, handing over fresh cuts of roasted meat and filling his cup with sweet juice.
Kira dragged him toward a circle of elder women who were roasting skewers of seasoned marsh-spiced meat over glowing embers, happily handing a hot skewer to Sol while taking a bite of her own. Zeyra grabbed a jug of refined juice from a passing barrel, pouring a generous splash into Sol’s cup with a sharp, satisfied grin.
"To the conquest," Zeyra said, raising her cup toward his.
"To the conquest," Sol echoed, clinking his cup against hers and Kira’s, taking a long, satisfying drink of the sweet, warming liquor.
The drums began to beat a deep triumphant rhythm in the center of the square that matched the roaring voice of a reborn clan.
Dancers swarmed into the open spaces, their movements wild and free, celebrating a future that was no longer clouded by fear or the shadow of encroaching enemies.
...
Slowly the rhythmic pounding of the great tribal drums intensified, the heavy hollow-log instruments sending deep, resonant thumps vibrating straight up through the soles of everyone’s feet.
Around the massive central fire pit, flames leaped fifteen feet into the cool night sky, sending showers of golden sparks swirling up toward the canopy of stars. The heat from the pit was intense, baking the skin of the dancers and illuminating the wide, grinning faces of the entire Veynar clan.
As more and more night deepened, the celebrations surged from lively to completely wild.
Large clay platters heaped with crackling roast boar, succulent cuts of spiced mountain ox, and steaming piles of seasoned tubers were carried out from the communal kitchens in an endless procession.
Warriors who had faced death shoulder-to-shoulder just days ago now slammed heavy wooden flagons together, sloshing sweet juices over their knuckles as their laughter echoed off the surrounding stone cliffs.
Old men stamped their carved walking sticks against the packed ground to the rythm of the drums.
Elderly women, draped in festive shawls woven from wool, clapped their hands in synchronized triple-beats, singing ancient, lilting chants of victory, harvest, and ancestral blessings.
The unrestrained relief was truly intoxicating. The suffocating shadow of hostile tribes that had choked the Veynar for generations had vanished in a matter of days.
For the first time in memory, the people drank not to numb the dread of an encroaching siege, but to bask in the uncontested dawn of their new sovereign reign.
Near the edge of the central clearing, a group of young female archers and scout apprentices spotted Kira standing beside Sol.
"Kira! Over here!" a sun-browned girl with a short hunting braid shouted, waving a cup over her head before breaking from the crowd and grabbing Kira’s free hand. "Why are you standing on the sidelines like a brooding elder? Hurry up and come tonight is for celebrations!"
Kira laughed, looking back at Sol with a bright, apologetic smile. "I’ll be right back!"
"Go on," Sol said with a faint chuckle, waving her off.
Before she could take three steps, four more young women swarmed in, linking their arms through Kira’s and dragging her directly into the swirling ring of dancers encircling the grand bonfire.
The tribal dance was fast, primal, and full of raw, stomping energy. The dancers moved in interlocking concentric circles, alternating between low, crouching steps that mimicked stalkers on the hunt and sudden, explosive leaps toward the sky accompanied by sharp, rhythmic whoops.
Kira fell into the tempo effortlessly. Her green tunic fluttered around her as her supple frame twisted and leaped, her long braid whipping through the firelight, her face glowing with pure, unburdened radiance.
Every movement of her lithe body carried the natural grace of a predator that had finally shed the fear of the cage.
Moments later, the vanguard line warriors found Zeyra.
