Chapter 625: The War For Survival Was Finished

For a time, no one moved to break the moment.

The wind continued its steady passage across the stone shelf. The kneeling Marauders remained where they had fallen, massive frames still and subdued.

The Veynar held their positions in a widening ring of spears and shields, the earlier confusion giving way to the disciplined calm of warriors who had just watched an expected meat-grinder dissolve into total submission.

Then Veylara exhaled once, the last of the battle-tension leaving her shoulders, and turned her attention to the practical work that victory always demanded.

"Thauren."

The commander was already moving toward her before the name fully left her mouth. He stopped a respectful distance away, fist pressed to his chest, waiting.

"Secure every giant," Veylara ordered. "Bind the warriors first. Separate the laborers and the non-combatants. I want a full count before sundown.... how many fighting-age males remain, how many females, how many young.

Strip the settlement of every weapon, every club, every scrap of usable iron or stone that could be turned against us later. The huts stay standing. We will need them."

"Yes, Warchief."

Under Commander Thauren’s leadership, the stunned squads poured through the open gate the moment the path was clear.

Even though surprised, confused and happy, they still moved in tight, practiced formations... shields up, spears angled, eyes sweeping the wide stone shelf for any sign of renewed violence.

The order had already passed down the line: secure, disarm, control. No one assumed the collapse would last without pressure applied. Years of fighting in the Great Orrath had taught them that an enemy on its knees could still rise if given even a breath of space.

The squads spread outward at once, encircling the kneeling giants in a widening ring of Veynar weapons and disciplined presence.

Groups peeled off to cover the mud huts, the scattered weapon piles, and the open flanks of the plateau.

Others moved directly among the surrendered Marauders, issuing short, sharp commands in the marauders’ tongue and gesturing for remaining clubs, javelins, and axes to be kicked farther away from reach.

Despite their vigilance, the giants offered almost no resistance.

Most remained exactly where they had dropped, massive foreheads pressed to the dry rock, broad backs rising and falling with heavy, uneven breaths.

When a Veynar warrior stepped in and pulled an axe from nerveless fingers, the Marauder simply let it go.

When another was nudged to shift so that a squad could bind the wrists of the fighters nearest him, he moved without protest.

The nightmare pressure and the mountain-like weight of Veylara’s presence still lingered in the air; between that and the black-armored figure still standing in the gate, whatever fight had remained in them had already been spent.

A few of the younger or more stubborn warriors tensed when hands settled on their shoulders, but even those brief flickers of instinct died quickly under the surrounding spears and the collective submission of the rest of the tribe.

The will to fight had been burned out of the tribe too thoroughly for any late defiance to take root.

So, throughout the Marauder conquest, no clubs were swung. No sudden charges broke the line. The encirclement closed cleanly, methodically, and without the bloody struggle the Veynar had fully expected to face once inside the stronghold.

Within minutes the entire Marauder settlement was under Veynar control.

...

The afternoon wind swept across the conquered ridge, carrying away the dust and the faint scent of fresh jungle. It moved freely over the open stone shelf now... unopposed, unchallenged... stirring the dry scrub at the edges of the plateau and tugging at the edges of discarded clubs still lying in the dirt.

The entire operation had taken less than an hour.

And just like the campaigns that had come before it, not a single Veynar warrior had fallen.

Veylara walked through the center of the kneeling giants without hurry. Her boots struck the stone with steady, deliberate weight.

For a long moment she said nothing.

She simply looked out over the vast southern ridges... the broken stone shelves, the deep gorges, the distant haze where the highlands eventually gave way to further wilderness... and the deep blue of her eyes burned with sovereign triumph, countless other complex emotions.

When she finally spoke, her voice carried cleanly across the canyon, strong enough for every kneeling Marauder and every standing Veynar to hear.

"The Zharun are absorbed."

"The Zerith are broken."

"And the Gray Marauders have fallen."

She let the heavy and irreversible words settle, before she turned her gaze toward Sol.

A rare unshielded smile touched her lips, filled with a depth of gratitude and pride she rarely allowed to show. In that expression was the full weight of everything the tribe had faced: the poisoned leaders, the near-extinction in the pass, the long shadow of the Coalition, and the impossible reversal that had followed.

"The Coalition is dead, Sol," she said. "From this day forth... the entire northern expanse of the Great Orrath belongs to the Veynar."

Kira and Zeyra moved up to stand near Sol as the work unfolded around them.

Kira’s bow was already unstrung and slung across her back. The sharp focus she had carried through the climb and the charge had softened into something quieter, though her eyes still moved across the plateau with residual alertness. Zeyra cleaned the last traces of dust from her daggers with a strip of cloth, then slid them home into their sheaths. Her expression was cool, but the faint curve at the corner of her mouth betrayed a hard satisfaction.

"Three territories," Zeyra said under her breath. "One day and a half. And we still haven’t lost anyone."

"Don’t say it too loudly," Kira murmured. "The ancestors might decide we’ve been greedy enough."

Sol said nothing for a moment. His crimson gaze remained on the far horizon, where the southern ridges eventually blurred into deeper, unknown ranges

The war for survival was finished.

The board that had once been filled with enemies, traitors, and converging threats had been cleared... completely, and without the tribe paying the price everyone had once expected.
