Chapter 1212 - 1239: Unmasking the True Face 24
Chu Zhan let out a sigh. "It’s not like I don’t know what she’s thinking. It’s exactly because I know that I can’t bear to push her."
"Sis, Nuannuan said before that everyone was forcing her, and not a single person has ever respected what she wanted."
Chu Zhan pressed his fingers to his brow, his breathing labored and heavy with pain. "When I heard her say that, my heart felt like it was going to split open. I really ache for her. So, Sis, I don’t want to force her. I respect her choice."
"Even if she’s breaking up with me to protect me, even if I clearly know she doesn’t want to marry Lu Xingshen, I still don’t want to pressure her. As long as she’s happy."
Nianyang said faintly, "But, brother, you’re really okay with her marrying a bad man who’s scheming against her?"
Chu Zhan was stunned. Actually, putting aside his own feelings, he felt Lu Xingshen treated Shi Nuan pretty well—at least he could keep her safe. He wasn’t the type of man who put love above everything else; to him, liking someone meant respecting their free will. All that overbearing-CEO stuff was impossible with him.
This was the obvious difference between Chu Zhan and Li Tingyan.
"Brother, I’ve already looked into Nuannuan’s background. She’s actually the daughter of the Jian Family, Jian Xiong’s granddaughter. I already have the evidence, and Lu Xingshen knows all of this too."
"What did you say, Nuannuan is the Jian Family’s daughter?"
"Yeah. I don’t have time right now to explain how it all happened."
Nianyang said quickly,
"But the fact is, that’s exactly how it is. And Lu Xingshen knew before any of us. Yet in order to control Nuannuan, he buried this, refused to let her go home. He’s that terrifying. If Nuannuan marries him, she won’t have a good life."
The news hit Chu Zhan so hard it scrambled his brain; he still hadn’t recovered.
Nianyang dropped another bombshell. "And the main reason Nuannuan is marrying Lu Xingshen isn’t to protect you. It’s because Lu Xingshen once saved her life. When she was little, she almost drowned and died, and it was Lu Xingshen who saved her. Because she owes him her life, she’s restrained by him in everything. She’s afraid that if she forces things and stays with you, Lu Xingshen will retaliate against you later, and you’ll suffer because of it. She doesn’t want you to be dragged down and controlled by Lu Xingshen along with her."
Chu Zhan suddenly shot to his feet. "What did you just say?"
Nianyang had no idea why he was suddenly so agitated. "I said Nuannuan only married Lu Xingshen so you wouldn’t be wronged..."
"Not that!" Chu Zhan’s eyes were shining so brightly it was startling. "You said she almost drowned when she was little and was saved by Lu Xingshen. When did that happen? Where did she drown?"
Nianyang said, "I think it was when she was six, in a pond not far from outside the Shi Family residence."
Chu Zhan’s eyes suddenly reddened. "I was clearly the one who saved Nuannuan. That bastard Lu Xingshen actually took credit for it."
Now it was Nianyang’s turn to be shocked. "Brother, what are you saying, you were the one who saved Nuannuan?"
"Yeah, it was me." Chu Zhan ground out the words, teeth clenched, sinking into the memory. "That day I was outside doing weighted training. I heard a little girl crying for help, so I went to save her. After that I went to look for a nearby clinic. When I got back, the little girl was already gone. I thought she’d gone home by herself, and it never occurred to me that she was actually Nuannuan."
Nianyang stared at him. "Then why didn’t you say anything earlier!"
Chu Zhan looked aggrieved. "I didn’t know Nuannuan’s fear of water was because she’d almost drowned. I never connected it. I only suddenly remembered it when you said all that just now."

That’s it for today’s update. Thank you all for the recommendation votes.
Even though lots of readers have left and I’ve been so upset I’ve wanted to just finish this plotline and end the story, I even don’t feel like writing about the Female Lead’s child anymore.
But for the babies who’ve stayed, I think I have to properly write this to the end.
The new story is already in preparation. It’ll still be a historical-era novel and will be released next month. You can follow me, and then you’ll see it as soon as it’s posted. ❤
