"I’m sorry," I said again, because I felt I had to. "For everything. For the courtyard. For not telling you sooner about... us. About Adrien. I know I broke what we had. I know I can’t just waltz back in and act like it didn’t happen."
Ethan studied me for a long moment, his eyes steady. "You did break something," he said softly. "And yeah, it still hurts. But right now? What matters is making sure we don’t end up like Logan. Everything else? We can sort out later. Or not. But we can’t solve anything if we’re dead."
His bluntness took my breath away for a second. Then I nodded, my throat tight.
Before I left, Ethan walked me to the door and paused with his hand on the knob, looking down at me with the same intense gaze I’d fallen for months ago.
"Stay at Gigi’s," he urged firmly. "Don’t go back to the house. Not until we know more. If Keith figures out you overheard him, if he even suspects...he won’t hesitate. He’s already shown that."
The gravity of his words sank in as he said them. I felt the chill run down my spine again, sharper this time. "You really think he’d...?"
"I think he killed my uncle to keep a secret," Ethan replied simply. "I think he’d do whatever it takes to bury another one."
He opened the door, and the cold night air rushed in, sharper than before, bringing tiny flecks of snow that stung my cheeks.
"When this all blows over...if it does..." I began, not even sure of how to put the jumbled mess that was my thoughts into words. "We should talk, about...the three of us. I know what I did was wrong and... frankly...um, weird. With me you know falling for my own stepbrother... Adrien."
