My breath caught in my throat as Adrien’s words lingered in the air, low and deliberate, his body radiating warmth that felt like a solid wall, pinning me in place without even touching me. The hunger in his gaze was clear, dark and raw, sending a treacherous shiver racing down my spine—one that had nothing to do with fear.
For a heartbeat, I was frozen, unable to move or think; all I could feel was the heat from his bare skin and the faint cedar scent that wrapped around me like a drug.
A drug I really wanted to get addicted to...even if it ruined me.
Then, reality hit me, sharp and cold.
I ducked under his arm before he could react, slipping out from the cage of his body and putting a safe distance of several feet between us. My hands shook as I shoved them into the pockets of my pajama pants, turning to face him, hoping I looked more resolute than the chaotic mess I felt inside.
"No," I said, surprising myself with how firm my voice sounded. "That’s... that’s not happening...at least, not right now."
Adrien straightened slowly, his arms falling to his sides, the teasing edge in his demeanor fading into something quieter and more serious. He didn’t invade my space again, but he didn’t look away either...just watched me with that steady gaze that always felt like he could see through all the defenses I tried to put up.
"Noah," he said softly, almost gently, "you can draw all the lines you want, but we both know they’re already blurred beyond recognition."
I shook my head, stepping back another pace until my calves bumped against the edge of his desk chair.
