Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 838: The Price of a Realm

The swirling grey mist of the cosmic boundary parted like a heavy curtain. Old Du’s wooden skiff glided smoothly onto the silver waters of the central canal.

Daiki did not wait for the boat to fully dock. He vaulted over the side and landed heavily on the stone pier. He patted the spatial ring on his finger to ensure the cargo was still there before turning toward the medical district.

Li Yu disembarked a moment later and offered a respectful nod to the old ferryman and thanked him for taking them. Old Du returned the gesture and left.

Daiki and Li Yu walked together through the quiet streets of Kyokai City with long and determined strides. The urgency of their mission pushed them forward until the familiar wooden structure of the Ward of Tranquility came into view.

They pushed the sliding doors open and stepped into the hushed environment of the healing pavilion.

Elder Vaelin was currently grinding a mixture of dried spiritual roots in a stone mortar. She looked up as the doors opened and her eyes widened slightly when she recognized Daiki. The giant Raging demon had left a few weeks ago on what she assumed was a difficult mission. Yet he had returned, looking uninjured and radiating a dense aura of newfound confidence.

"You have returned," Elder Vaelin noted while setting her pestle down. "Did you encounter trouble?"

"I encountered success," Daiki answered as he walked directly toward the private alcove where Sora rested.

Elder Vaelin followed him inside. Sora was still lying on the jade healing bed. Her silver fur lacked its usual luster and her breathing was shallow and uneven. The shattered state of her internal core was slowly draining her life force.

Daiki stepped up to the edge of the bed and reached into his spatial ring. He pulled out three separate containers and placed them carefully on the wooden table nearby.

The first was the beautifully carved wooden box radiating dense life energy, the welcoming gift from Master Uthara. The second was the specialized jade box containing the Lotus Core he had purchased with his tournament points. The third was the heavily sealed box holding the Sunfire Spirit Root from the academy.

"I have procured what is hopefully needed," Daiki announced.

He opened the containers one by one. The ambient Qi in the small alcove surged instantly. The rich and restorative aromas of the medicines filled the air. Elder Vaelin stepped forward and stared at the glowing treasures in sheer disbelief. Her hands trembled slightly as she hovered over the open boxes.

"This is..." Elder Vaelin stammered, her usual professional composure slipping. "I expected you to search for years, perhaps decades, to find even a fragment of a lesser substitute. You found three treasures in a matter of weeks."

"I had strong motivation and I was incredibly lucky in my search." Daiki replied simply. He looked at the healer with intense focus. "Can you prepare them?"

"I can," Elder Vaelin confirmed while regaining her focus. She carefully picked up the wooden box containing the Sovereign's elixir. "The procedure will be delicate. Her fractured meridians are incredibly fragile. I will need to guide the energy manually which requires direct and unhindered access to her spiritual pathways."

Li Yu understood the implication immediately. Guiding Qi through a patient's core often required physical contact along the major meridian points on the chest and back.

"I will wait outside," Li Yu offered. He gave Daiki an encouraging pat on the shoulder. "I am glad we got back in time."

Daiki nodded his thanks. Li Yu turned and walked out of the alcove, sliding the paper screen shut behind him to give them privacy. Daiki remained inside. From the main sitting area of the ward, Li Yu could sense the fluctuations of energy occurring behind the screen.

Elder Vaelin administered the first medicine. The elixir from Master Uthara acted as a powerful restorative wave. Even through the paper walls, Li Yu could feel the dense life force spreading outward. It knit the superficial damage and reinforced Sora's physical vessel and was preparing it for the heavier burden to come.

A few hours later, the energy signature shifted. The cool aura of the Lotus Core filled the pavilion. Elder Vaelin was using the second medicine to aid the foundation laid by the first. The lotus core sank deep into Sora's center, actively rebuilding the shattered fragments of her internal core. The process was slow and methodical. It was helping to weave the severed connections back together with meticulous care.

When the suns of Kyokai City began to dim toward their evening cycle, the paper screen finally slid open.

Daiki stepped out into the main ward. He looked exhausted but a genuine smile graced his scarred face.

"She is resting," Daiki said as Li Yu stood up. "Her breathing is deep and steady. Elder Vaelin says the core is forming again. It will take some time for her to regain her strength and adapt to the new flow of Qi but the danger is gone. She is going to be fine."

"That is excellent news," Li Yu smiled warmly. The long and desperate journey had finally yielded the result they had hoped for. Elder Vaelin walked out of the alcove a moment later. She wiped her hands on a clean cloth and offered a tired but satisfied nod.

"The integration was highly successful," Elder Vaelin reported. "The quality of the medicines ensured there would be no lingering corruption in her pathways. If things continue like this, she should make a full recovery within a month or two."

She paused and glanced toward the small wooden table inside the alcove.

"However," Elder Vaelin continued carefully. "We only utilized the first two medicines. The Sunfire Spirit Root remains untouched. Her foundation should be secure without it."

Daiki nodded. "I brought as many as I could just to be certain. I am glad she did not have to endure the strain of a third integration."

Elder Vaelin hesitated for a fraction of a second before speaking her mind. "Candidate Daiki, The Veil is a broken realm. We lack the environment to cultivate natural treasures of that caliber. Having a Sunfire Spirit Root in our possession could save some lives during future battles or aid our own elders in stabilizing their crumbling domains."

She offered a respectful bow. "I would like to ask if you would consider trading it to us. The healers guild possesses a vast stockpile of high tier soul resources. We could offer you an incredibly generous exchange that would greatly benefit your own cultivation."

Daiki looked at the elder. He did not dismiss the request nor did he react with greed. The recent trials and his conversations with his father had taught him the value of measured negotiation.

"I am open to a trade," Daiki agreed with a calm voice. "The root is valuable and I know your people need resources. However, I will not finalize any exchange today. We will make the trade only after Sora is fully recovered and walking on her own two feet. I will keep it until I am certain there are no unforeseen complications or relapses. I am taking no risks with her life."

Elder Vaelin smiled in understanding. "That is a wise and fair condition. We will hold our resources ready for when that day arrives. Thank you."

With Sora safely on the path to healing, Li Yu felt a sense of relief. He planned to return to his pavilion and finally get a full night of rest. Before he could reach the exit of the ward, the front doors slid open.

Old Du stood in the doorway. He held his wooden paddle and looked directly at Li Yu.

"Your companion is safe," Old Du stated, though it sounded more like an established fact than a question. "That is good. If you have a moment, Li Yu, please come with me. Astramentis has requested your presence."

Li Yu raised an eyebrow. The timing was highly specific. He nodded to Daiki and followed the old ferryman out into the cool evening air.

They walked in silence until they reached the towering white marble structure of the Pagoda of the First Echo. The heavy wooden doors opened as they approached, granting them entry into the endless expanse of dark space.

The pale ethereal mist parted as the spinning astrolabe descended from the darkness above. The intricate rings of Astramentis clicked and rotated while glowing with a soft golden light.

"Welcome back, Li Yu," Astramentis resonated in his mind. The layered voice sounded weary but focused. "I am pleased to see you return safely from the Kurogane Realm."

"Thank you," Li Yu offered a brief bow. "Old Du mentioned you wanted to see me."

"I do," the artifact hummed. The golden light pulsed in rhythm with its words. "I have observed your actions since you arrived in this realm. I have seen your pragmatism in the trials and your willingness to bleed for your companions. I must ask you a direct question. Do you truly wish to help us restore The Veil?"

Li Yu found the question slightly odd. "I have no ill will toward this realm. I have participated in the trials and I have gotten to know some of your people. I am willing to help where I can but why are you asking me this now?"

Astramentis spun quietly for a moment.

"Because a unique opportunity has presented itself," Astramentis explained. "A situation has arisen outside of our borders. Several realms located close to our cosmic position are controlled by a faction known as the Eidolon Court. The Eidolon are a phantom-like people who possess a mixture of physical traits from various other lineages but are spectral like in appearance. They operate a highly secretive and powerful empire."

Li Yu listened carefully. He had never encountered the Eidolon but managing a multi-realm empire required significant military and political strength.

"The Eidolon are facing a severe crisis within their own borders," the artifact continued. "They have an issue that desperately needs to be resolved. In exchange for resolving this issue, their leadership has offered a staggering payment. They are willing to give us the Realm Essence of one of their controlled worlds. More importantly, it is one of the worlds that closely matches our own."

Li Yu frowned as he didn’t quite understand the process.

"Extracting a Realm Essence destroys the world it is taken from," Astramentis noted. "The land shatters, the spiritual veins collapse and the realm dies."

"It is a heavy and terrible price. Offering a Realm Essence shows just how desperate their needs are. For us, however, that essence is a lifeline. Injecting a healthy Realm Essence into the foundation of The Veil would repair a large portion of the damage Xyphyra caused. It would accelerate our restoration a great deal." Astramentis went on.

Li Yu crossed his arms in thought. The scale of the trade was massive but he saw the immediate flaw in the conversation.

"That sounds like a great opportunity for your people," Li Yu said bluntly. "But I am not one of your people. I am a guest participating in a localized recruitment drive. You are asking me to step into a foreign empire to solve a crisis so severe they are willing to destroy a realm to fix it. That is a massive risk for me."

"It is a tremendous ask," Astramentis agreed. The golden light shifted to an apologetic hue. "You are an outsider and it is not your burden to carry. The Eidolon Court has promised heavy rewards for the individual who assists them as well, separate from the Realm Essence they offer us."

"I do not need heavy rewards," Li Yu countered plainly. He remembered his choices in the Pagoda of the Veiled Path. He was not a righteous hero desperate to save the world, nor was he a greedy mercenary willing to die for gold.

"I have what I need to cultivate for some time. I do not want to take on unneeded risks to save this realm, as unfortunate as your situation is. It is a disproportionate ask. I have no reason to do anything for the Eidolon."

Astramentis fell silent. The ancient rings clicked methodically as the artifact processed his refusal.

"You are right," Astramentis finally responded. The voice held no anger, only a deep resignation. "I had to ask and I expected you to refuse. A pragmatist does not accept blind risks. However, I brought the offer to you because I had to take the chance. You are the only person who fits the description they requested."

Li Yu raised an eyebrow. "What description?"

"They provided a very specific set of criteria regarding soul density, cultivation alignment and physical capacity," the artifact explained. "Out of all the candidates and native elders currently residing in The Veil, your foundation is the only one that matches their requirements. It is still not certain that you would meet their needs once they see you though."

"What exactly is the issue?" Li Yu questioned. His curiosity was piqued despite his refusal. "What can a Law Integration cultivator do that their own empire of powerhouses cannot handle?"

"I do not know," Astramentis admitted freely.

Li Yu stared at the spinning disk. "You want me to accept a mission where you do not even know what the objective is?"

"The Eidolon Court is incredibly secretive," Astramentis explained. "They refused to broadcast the nature of their crisis. They stated that the information will only be revealed to the person who fits their needs and to the guardian accompanying him. If you were to accept, Old Du would act as your guardian and travel with you to their realm."

Li Yu looked over his shoulder at Old Du. The ferryman stood quietly near the entrance. He did not pressure Li Yu or try to leverage their past interactions. He simply waited for the decision.

Li Yu turned back to the giant astrolabe. He let out a long and slow breath. The situation felt highly suspicious. A powerful empire offering a Realm Essence for a secret task suited only for him was a recipe for a deadly trap. Li Yu has been wary of schemes for a while now. He liked Old Du and he understood the artifact's desperation but he was not going to walk blindly into the dark.

"My answer remains no," Li Yu stated firmly. His voice echoed through the ethereal mist. "I will not agree to leave The Veil for a secret mission. I will not accept a contract where the terms are hidden."

The golden light of Astramentis dimmed slightly.

"If they are truly that desperate for my specific help," Li Yu continued as he turned toward the wooden doors. "Tell them to come here. If they want me to risk my life, they can travel to The Veil and talk to me face to face. I will not accept anything unless I know exactly what I am walking into."

Li Yu did not wait for the artifact to argue. He pushed the heavy wooden doors open and stepped back out into the plaza, leaving the desperate artifact and the silent ferryman behind.
