Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 834: The Sovereign’s Offer

The deafening roar of the stadium slowly faded behind him as Daiki walked off the central white platform. A guide dressed in formal robes was waiting for him at the edge of the arena. The guide bowed deeply and gestured toward a private corridor. Daiki followed without asking any questions.

They walked through a series of winding stone halls beneath the stadium. The walls were lined with glowing pearls and the noise of the crowd was completely blocked out by dense isolation arrays.

"You are to wait in the next chamber." The guide instructed respectfully. He stopped before a set of heavy wooden doors carved with intricate battle scenes. "Someone very important is waiting for you inside."

The guide bowed once more and quickly retreated down the hall. Daiki stood alone for a moment before he pushed the heavy wooden doors open and stepped into the room.

It was a lavish and spacious chamber. Fine silk tapestries hung from the walls and a thick woven rug covered the floor. A woman stood near a large window overlooking the distant floating peaks. Daiki stopped in his tracks. He felt an invisible weight press down on his very soul.

The woman turned around. She was tall and possessed a commanding presence. She wore crimson robes adorned with golden embroidery. A crest of two crossed spears behind a shattered iron shield was proudly displayed on her chest. Her eyes were sharp and carried the weight of countless centuries. She did not release her aura but the ambient Qi in the room naturally bowed to her presence.

Daiki realized quickly that she was terrifyingly powerful. She was stronger than his father and was stronger than Elder Tsuna that brought their academy here.

"Welcome, Daiki of the Blood Iron Clan." The woman spoke. Her voice was smooth but it carried an undeniable edge of authority. "I am Master Uthara. I am a Sovereign from the Valeran Realm."

Daiki was surprised to hear of her power, he was aware of the Sovereign realm and what it represented. He offered a deep and respectful bow. He did not know what the Valeran Realm was but he understood the absolute power of a Sovereign. "It is an honor to meet you, Senior."

"Sit." Uthara gestured to a set of comfortable chairs near a low wooden table.

Daiki walked over and sat down carefully. Uthara took the seat opposite him. She poured a cup of fragrant spiritual tea and pushed it across the table.

"You must be wondering why you are here instead of celebrating with your academy." Uthara began casually. "The truth is quite simple. The final test of the tournament was completely rigged."

Daiki blinked in surprise. He picked up the teacup but did not drink. He waited for her to explain.

"The Valeran Realm is a higher tier world than this or your home realm." Uthara continued. She rested her hands on the table. "It is a place defined by constant war. We are locked in endless cosmic battles with rival realms. Our borders are always expanding and our armies are always fighting. We require strong leaders and true pillars. That is why we arranged the final test today."

Daiki listened intently. He thought back to the strange illusions that he went through during the final test.

"The Trial of the Unseen Path was a filter." Uthara explained freely. "We paid the local academies a fortune to allow us to recruit their finest talents. We used the illusions to judge your character. I watched you and I liked what I saw."

"I only did what I felt was right." Daiki replied honestly.

"And that is one of the reasons why I chose you." Uthara smiled. "I chose you primarily because of the incredible density of your soul. Your physical combat abilities are impressive but your soul is extraordinary for a Domain King. However, your choices in the final test solidified my decision. I need generals who can hold the line. I need warriors with a grounded resolve. I want you to become my personal disciple."

Daiki set the teacup down. He was completely stunned.

To be taken as a disciple by a Sovereign was a legendary opportunity. It would elevate his status beyond anything his father could ever imagine. He would have access to resources and teachings that the Kurogane Realm could never provide.

Yet he hesitated.

He looked at his massive crimson hands. He remembered the empty feeling from the Karma Severing illusion. He remembered his true purpose. He did not enter this tournament for glory or for a legendary master. He entered for one specific reason.

Daiki looked up and met the Sovereign's ancient eyes. He decided to be entirely truthful. He knew lying to a Sovereign was a death sentence anyway.

"I am deeply honored by your offer." Daiki spoke clearly and firmly. "But I must be honest with you. I did not enter this tournament to seek a master or to fight for honor. I entered for a singular purpose. I am fighting to save the woman I love."

Uthara raised an eyebrow. She did not look angry though. She looked curious.

"Her name is Sora." Daiki continued. "She is gravely injured and her soul is fading. I am looking for treasures to heal her. That is why I need the prize points from winning my bracket. Furthermore, I am currently undergoing a trial within The Veil. My time there is not yet finished. I cannot abandon my path or my purpose, even for a Sovereign."

Daiki went on to tell her what type of medicines he was told would work. Once he was done Daiki braced himself. He fully expected the powerful master to strike him down for his insolence or dismiss him immediately. Uthara only stared at him while he was talking. Once he was done, a bright smile suddenly broke across her sharp features and she let out a loud and joyful laugh.

"The Veil?" Uthara asked in disbelief. "You are currently undergoing the trials of The Veil?"

Daiki nodded slowly. "Yes. I am currently stationed there."

"This is magnificent!" Uthara clapped her hands together. Her entire demeanor changed from regal authority to absolute delight. "That explains the terrifying density of your soul. The Veil is legendary and I have heard of it before. It is a crucible that forges true monsters of the soul. You being there is not a problem at all. It is a massive blessing."

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Daiki relaxed slightly. He was surprised by her reaction.

"I will be completely honest with you." Uthara leaned forward eagerly. "Knowing that you are undergoing trials at The Veil makes me want you as a disciple even more. It proves your foundation is what I thought it was. I do not want to pull you away from that opportunity. I want you to finish your time there. It is a chance for growth that I cannot replicate for you."

"But what about my apprenticeship?" Daiki asked.

"We will make it official today." Uthara stated firmly. "I will gift many things to you upon becoming my disciple. I understand your primary motivation is the woman named Sora. You won your bracket and you will receive your tournament points to buy what you need. However, my welcoming gift to you will be an additional medicine from your list that you told me earlier."

Daiki felt his heart skip a beat. Another medicine. This changed everything. It massively increased Sora's odds of a full recovery. He could secure two medicines today.

"I will provide the medicine immediately." Uthara promised. "I only ask one thing in return. The Veil contains unique soul resources that are incredibly difficult to obtain elsewhere. If it is possible, I want you to save some of those soul resources for me. When you eventually come to the Valeran Realm, I will exchange them with you for fair value. I won’t take advantage of you. I will give you weapons, manuals or whatever else you might need at the time."

Daiki was absolutely thrilled. The deal was incredibly generous. Uthara was supporting his current path and providing the exact resources he desperately needed. She was treating him with respect and care.

"I accept." Daiki stood up and moved away from the table. "I am willing to take you as my master."

"Excellent." Uthara stood up as well. Her aura settled into a warm and approving glow.

She instructed him on the formal acceptance process of the Valeran Realm. Daiki knelt on the woven rug. He pressed his forehead to the floor and performed three deep kowtows. It was a gesture of respect and loyalty. He swore to uphold the honor of her teachings and to serve as a sturdy pillar in the wars to come. They formed a contract with one another to not reveal their secrets to outsiders as well as the last step in the process. A mutual protection for them both.

"Rise, my disciple." Uthara commanded gently.

Daiki stood up with a smile on his face. Uthara reached into her robes and produced two items. She handed them to him carefully.

The first was a beautifully carved wooden box radiating dense life energy. Daiki knew without looking that it contained the promised medicine. The second item was a heavy iron token etched with the crossed spears of her crest.

"This token serves two purposes." Uthara explained as Daiki inspected the heavy iron. "It contains a communication array. You can use it to contact me if you encounter a true crisis. More importantly, it carries a special spatial imprint. Once your time in The Veil is completely over, you can show this token to any of the Ferrymen. The imprint will allow them to navigate the chaotic void and bring you directly to the Valeran Realm."

Daiki gripped the token tightly. He felt a sense of security from having it. He had secured a powerful backing and he had secured Sora's future.

"Take your time in The Veil." Uthara offered a final nod of approval. "Grow stronger. Save your woman. When you are ready for war, come find me. You can bring her along with you. If she is there as well, she would also be an amazing candidate. If my teachings don’t match with hers, she can pick someone else as a master to learn from."

It was an amazing offer and Daiki bowed in thanks. Whether or not Sora took it or not, it was a great opportunity. He secured the wooden box and the iron token within his spatial ring. He left the private chamber with a light heart and a renewed sense of purpose.

He navigated the corridors and returned to the Galeheart Academy staging area. The rest of the candidates had already departed. Li Yu was sitting alone in a private preparation room. He was drinking tea and waiting patiently for Daiki.

Daiki quickly walked into the room and closed the heavy door behind him. He engaged the privacy arrays immediately like a child who had news he couldn’t wait to tell.

Li Yu looked up and smiled. "You took your time. The elders were looking for you to distribute the prize points. How did the mysterious final meeting go?"

Daiki walked over and sat heavily on a wooden bench. He let out a long breath but was all smiles. He looked at his friend and decided not to hold anything back.

He told Li Yu everything because there was no need to hide it. He explained the rigged nature of the final test. He spoke about Master Uthara and the endless wars of the Valeran Realm. Finally, he detailed the incredible deal he had struck. He explained the welcoming gift and the arrangement regarding The Veil's soul resources.

Li Yu listened in stunned silence. His teacup remained suspended halfway to his mouth. When Daiki finally finished speaking, Li Yu slowly lowered his cup and a massive smile broke across his face. He began to laugh quietly.

"A Sovereign." Li Yu shook his head. "You managed to get recruited by a Sovereign realm master. That is completely absurd."

"They are looking for people and thought I was a great fit." Daiki grinned broadly. "And I needed the medicine and support. It worked out perfectly."

"I am incredibly happy for you, Daiki." Li Yu stood up and placed a hand on his friend's massive shoulder. His voice was filled with genuine warmth. "This secures your path forward. But more importantly, it secures Sora. You have done it!"

Daiki felt a lump form in his throat. He nodded silently. The crushing weight he had carried was finally lifting. The desperate race for medicine was coming to an end. He was always firmed in will and purpose but that did not make the task at hand any easier. It did not stop the fear of failure from haunting him this entire time.

"We need to go to the prize pavilion." Daiki stood up and was ready to get going. "I have a massive amount of tournament points to spend. I need to claim the second medicine before we leave this realm."

They left the private room together and walked toward the grand prize pavilion located near the center of the academy grounds. The pavilion was a massive structure built from white stones and blue glass. It housed the treasures provided by the Organizer and the combined academies for this tournament. This year the elders did not feel any pang of loss as the students exchanged their hard earned prizes.

Daiki was escorted directly to the vault. His status as the Domain King bracket winner granted him priority in choosing treasures. An academy elder presented him with a glowing catalog of treasures. Daiki bypassed the powerful martial manuals and the rare forging materials. He went straight to the alchemy section. He found exactly what he was looking for.

He exchanged the vast majority of his winning points for the Nine Leaf Azure Lotus Core. It was a medicine capable of repairing shattered souls and regenerating severed life force. It was the perfect complement to the medicine Uthara had already given him.

Daiki secured the lotus core in a specialized jade box. He still had a decent amount of points remaining.

He turned his attention to the weapons section. He wanted to get something for Sora. He browsed the catalog carefully.

After looking for some time, he finally settled on a magnificent longsword. The blade was forged from refined star steel and the hilt was wrapped in pale blue scaled leather. It was named Winter’s Breath. It resonated perfectly with Sora's cold and precise cultivation path. Daiki exchanged his points for the weapon and stored it carefully.

He used his final few points to purchase a collection of healing pills and a set of lightweight and durable traveling robes for himself.

Daiki walked out of the prize pavilion with Li Yu. The sun was beginning to set over the floating peaks of the Astral Gale Realm. The sky was painted in brilliant shades of orange and purple. Daiki looked toward the horizon and never felt lighter. His spatial ring and his soul was filled with hope. He had two medicines. He had a powerful master. He had a clearer path forward now as well. The brutal trials of the tournament were over. It was time to go and give Sora the medicines.
