Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 812: The Cost of Pushing Forward

The illusionary world of cracked black glass and glowing purple fault lines dissolved into a pale mist. Li Yu leaned heavily on Star Crusher as the suffocating scent of ancient blood and burnt ozone faded from the air. The physical reality of the Inner Sanctum slowly reasserted itself and he found himself standing back in the blinding white core of the Pagoda of the Sundered Sky.

He took a long and ragged breath. His muscles ached with a deep exhaustion that he had not felt for awhile. He had burned through a massive amount of Qi to survive the three historical waves.

The white light in the center of the room shifted and condensed. The massive and spinning astrolabe descended from the high ceiling. The rings of Astramentis rotated with a slow and rhythmic click. They were casting a warm golden glow over Li Yu’s sweat drenched robes.

"Your soul is an anomaly but your martial skills are truly monstrous as well," Astramentis resonated. The ancient and layered voice carried a tone of curiosity and mild respect. "I have observed candidates with overwhelming power who lack the mind to wield it. I have seen brilliant tacticians who lack the physical vessel to endure. You possess a good balance."

"I have had excellent teachers," Li Yu replied softly while loosening his grip on the heavy staff. "And I have learned that raw power is useless if you do not know how to fight against something."

The golden light of the artifact pulsed warmly. "You are also remarkably perceptive, Candidate Li Yu. The Guardians informed me of the conversation you held in the teahouse with your peers. You correctly deduced the nature of the Trial Grounds."

Li Yu did not flinch or reach for his weapon. He simply looked up at the spinning disk. "Then it is true? We are the fuel for a symbiotic engine?"

"It is entirely true," Astramentis confirmed without a hint of shame or deception. "It is no dark secret and you are not the first candidate to figure it out. Many of the prodigies and kingdom heirs understand the exchange perfectly. We gather what is put out and weave it back into the shattered spiritual veins of The Veil."

"And in return, you grant us ancient heritage and soul nurturing resources," Li Yu finished the thought.

"Exactly," Astramentis hummed. "Since it does not permanently harm your core foundation, there is no issue of malice or theft. It is a mutually beneficial Daoist exchange. You push your limits to claim our wealth and we harvest your struggle to keep our world breathing and recycle it. It is the only way we can survive the long dark while a true solution is thought of. The trial grounds pay for themselves so to speak."

Li Yu nodded in understanding. He respected the pragmatism of the artifact. There were no hidden daggers or manipulative lies regarding the ultimate purpose of the trials. It was a brutal but honest transaction.

"The three battlefields you just survived were merely the first sequence of the Sundered Sky," Astramentis explained as the white light around them began to dim slightly, creating a comfortable and soothing atmosphere. "You are allowed to rest here in the core. Once you have recovered, the second sequence will begin. You must witness the full scope of the Great Devastation to refine your skill to the peak."

Li Yu accepted the terms and sat down in the lotus position on the smooth floor. He drew the ambient Qi of the pagoda into his body to speed his recovery. The fighting did not end that day.

For the next week, Li Yu was plunged into an unrelenting gauntlet of historical nightmares. Astramentis would allow him brief periods of rest in the white core before tearing reality apart once more.

He fought on the shattered walls of a grand fortress against swarms of winged void beasts. He stood his ground in a sinking valley against corrupted elders who wielded terrifying soul laws. He summoned Muddy to break enemy lines, deployed his Sentry clone to control the chaotic battlefields and swung Star Crusher until his arms felt entirely numb. He utilized his domain over and over again to familiarize himself with it and was tapping into all the different laws he had come to understand. It was a good opportunity for him to unleash all of his abilities.

When the final illusion shattered and the trial was completely over, a full seven days had passed in the outside world. Li Yu stepped out of the heavy iron doors of the Pagoda of the Sundered Sky.

The artificial sunlight of the Inner Sanctum felt blindingly bright against his tired eyes. His dark purple soul-jade badge pulsed heavily, burning a new symbol of completion into its surface. He was physically battered and his robes were torn but his eyes were incredibly sharp. The week-long crucible had refined his combat instincts and allowed him to explore his increase in power.

He left the isolated quadrant and walked back toward the bustling streets of Kyokai City. He was looking forward to a hot meal and the comfortable company of his friends. He headed straight home to bathe and change his clothes. After resting for a bit, he headed for the open-air restaurant where the trio usually met but their regular wooden booth was empty.

Frowning slightly, Li Yu wandered toward the outer training rings, expecting to find Daiki arm wrestling or Sora offering guidance to the native youths.

Instead, he found Daiki pacing nervously outside a large and elegant wooden pavilion situated near the edge of a silver canal. The pavilion lacked the aggressive architecture of the pagodas. It was surrounded by gardens of soothing, pale blue spiritual herbs. The heavy scent of sharp medicinal poultices drifted through the open windows.

Daiki looked up and stopped pacing when he saw Li Yu approaching. The giant crimson demon did not look relieved to see him. He looked incredibly somber and deeply worried.

"Where have you been?" Daiki asked, his deep voice carrying a rare edge of tension. "You vanished into the Inner Sanctum a week ago."

"The trial was extensive," Li Yu answered while glancing at the medicinal pavilion. "What is going on, Daiki? Where is Sora?"

Daiki sighed heavily and rubbed his face with a massive hand. He pointed toward the sliding white doors of the pavilion. "She is in there. The Ward of Tranquility."

Li Yu felt a sudden spike of alarm. "Was she injured in a trial? Did Jin Wu or one of the other factions attack her?"

"No one attacked her," Daiki shook his head quickly. "And it wasn't the trial itself that beat her. She was assigned to the Pagoda of the Chanting Blade again but on a much higher difficulty. She cleared it but she was carried out by the Guardians a few days ago."

"If she cleared it, why was she carried out?" Li Yu asked with his brow furrowing in confusion.

"Because she is entirely too stubborn," Daiki grumbled with a mixture of frustration and genuine concern. "I was told by the Guardian that she pushed her limits too far. From what they told me, she tried to forcefully integrate a highly volatile soul art with her physical sword techniques while under the immense pressure of the trial. She made a wrong move. The energies collided and caused heavy damage to her internal meridians. She nearly shattered her own foundation."

Li Yu stared at the pavilion doors. Sora was the most disciplined and precise cultivator he had met in The Veil. For her to make such a catastrophic error meant she was taking massive and unnecessary risks.

"Can we see her?" Li Yu asked quietly.

"Yes, but she is unconscious," Daiki replied as he turned and slid the white doors open.

Li Yu followed the giant demon into the pristine ward. The interior was lined with woven mats of healing grass. Several native attendants with glowing blue eyes moved quietly between the beds. They were adjusting incense burners and checking on a few other injured candidates.

In a private alcove near the back of the ward, Sora laid perfectly still on a jade healing bed. She looked incredibly fragile. Her usually vibrant silver fur was dull and her face was terribly pale. A complex array of glowing green spiritual needles had been carefully inserted along the major meridian points of her arms and chest to stabilize her fractured energy flow.

An older native woman was sitting beside the bed, carefully guiding a stream of soothing water Qi into Sora’s chest. The woman possessed an aura of power and absolute calm. She was clearly a master healer of The Veil.

"Elder Vaelin," Daiki whispered respectfully as they approached the bed. "This is our friend, Li Yu. He just returned from the Inner Sanctum.

The powerful native healer briefly opened her pupil-less eyes and offered Li Yu a polite nod before returning her full focus to the treatment. "Her condition is stable but the internal damage was severe. The people here are highly experienced with this type of trauma. We have spent millennia healing internal damage and fractured souls. She is in good hands but her body requires time to rebuild the broken pathways. She will remain unconscious until her core is secure."

"Thank you, Elder," Li Yu said with a deep bow of gratitude. "We appreciate everything you are doing for her."

Elder Vaelin nodded once more. "You may stay but do not disturb the ambient Qi."

For the next several days, Li Yu’s routine shifted entirely. When he was not summoned for minor tasks or resting in his own pavilion, he and Daiki spent their downtime in the Ward of Tranquility. They pulled up small wooden stools and sat quietly by Sora’s bedside. They provided a silent vigil of support, ensuring that their injured friend was never truly alone in the bustling city.

The atmosphere in the medical ward was somber but it gave the two remaining members of the trio plenty of time to talk in hushed voices. One evening, while the artificial suns outside cast a soft twilight glow through the paper screens, Li Yu looked across the jade bed at Daiki. The giant demon was carefully using his massive claws to peel a spiritual fruit, his movements surprisingly delicate.

"What are your plans after all of this is over?" Li Yu asked quietly.

Daiki paused, a piece of the fruit held halfway to his mouth. He looked at Li Yu, then down at the floor. The usual booming confidence of the Blood Iron Clan heir was completely gone.

"I have been thinking a lot about that lately," Daiki admitted softly. He placed the peeled fruit on a small wooden tray near Sora’s bed. "Every time I clear a trial, I gather more resources. I am becoming stronger, just as my father intended. But the thought of cashing out and returning to my home realm... it makes my stomach turn."

"You do not want to go back?" Li Yu asked, though he already knew the answer.

"I really don't," Daiki sighed, his horns dipping slightly. "If I go back, nothing changes. My father will take the soul nurturing treasures I didn’t use and use them to solidify his political alliances. He will force me to marry that terrifying hydra to secure our borders. I will spend the next thousands of years playing a role I absolutely hate."

Daiki looked up and gestured vaguely around the quiet medical ward. "But here? In The Veil? Things are different. The natives do not care about my clan's name or my father's wealth. The people in the outer rings smile when I walk by. I feel useful here, Li Yu. Not just as a weapon or a political bargaining chip but as a person."

Li Yu listened intently. He understood the desire for a simple, meaningful life. It was the exact same desire that had driven him to build his farm in Silkwood.

"Perhaps I will stay," Daiki continued, a spark of hope entering his golden eyes. "When I reach my limit in the pagodas, I can officially surrender my candidate badge. I could stay in Kyokai City permanently. I could help the natives clear the minor trials, gather soul drops and protect this broken world as I continue to grow stronger at my own pace."

Li Yu looked at his friend. Daiki’s vision of the future was noble but it was built on a flawed foundation.

"I do not think that is a bad idea, Daiki," Li Yu said gently while choosing his words with care. "This realm needs strong protectors and the people here clearly care for you. But staying here for the right reasons is very different from staying here just to hide."

Daiki frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

"Running away from things rarely ends well," Li Yu explained, his voice steady and grounded in his own hard learned lessons. "Karma is a heavy chain. If you abandon your clan without a word and hide in a broken realm, the unresolved issues with your father will fester. The fear of that hydra will always hang over your head. You will be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your long life, wondering if your clan has found a way to track you down."

Daiki shifted uncomfortably on his wooden stool, the wood groaning under his massive weight. He knew Li Yu was speaking the truth but it was a truth he did not want to face.

"You are stronger now than when you left," Li Yu encouraged him. "You have survived the crucible of Astramentis. You have proven your worth. Perhaps when the time is right, you should take your accumulated rewards, go back home and resolve things with your father first. Stand your ground. Tell him you refuse the marriage. Once you have severed those chains properly and secured your freedom, you can always choose to return here on your own terms. As a free person and not a fugitive."

Daiki stared at Li Yu for a long time. The giant demon’s expression was torn between the logic of the advice and the deep seated dread anchoring his heart. Finally, Daiki shuddered visibly and shook his head. He completely dismissed the idea.

"You do not understand, Li Yu," Daiki muttered, genuine terror bleeding into his deep voice. "You have never seen her when she is angry. You haven't seen the devastation she brings when her tea is cold. Even with my new strength, I cannot fight a six-headed warlord. And my father... he does not negotiate. He commands."

Daiki looked away with his golden eyes fixed on the paper screens. "I will think about it, but... I am too scared to return. It is safer to remain a ghost in The Veil."

Li Yu did not push the issue further. He could see that Daiki’s fear was a towering wall that logic could not easily scale. The demon was incredibly brave when facing historical nightmares and deadly arrays but the familial terror of his home realm paralyzed him completely.

Li Yu looked back down at Sora. The wolf woman remained silent and pale, trapped in her own internal struggle to repair the damage she had inflicted upon herself.

The trio was a collection of deeply flawed and running individuals. Daiki was running from his family. Li Yu had spent years running from the cosmic responsibilities he didn’t know he had but was slowly becoming aware of. And Sora... Sora was running toward something with such desperate speed that she was willing to destroy herself to reach it.

As Li Yu sat in the quiet ward, listening to the steady breathing of his friends, he could only hope that whatever finish line Sora was sprinting toward was truly worth the price she was paying.
