Chapter 781: It’s About to Begin
Khaos watched Zhan Tielan weep. He did not offer empty comfort. He did not register the tears as a reason to stop his explanation. The cosmos did not care about personal grief.
"We have a real chance here," Khaos continued. His voice remained even and pragmatic. "We can get Li Canghai out. Even if we were not doing this for the boy, it must be done for the stability of the realms. Your husband is important. While only a third of his total forces are trapped inside that temporal bubble with him, he is the key piece. If he falls, the entire sector collapses."
Zhan Tielan slowly lowered her hands. The tears on her face evaporated under the sudden terrifying heat of her rising Qi. The guilt and grief were still there but they were now forged into something infinitely more dangerous. She stood up.
"If my son is going into that zone," Zhan Tielan declared. Her voice was devoid of any remaining softness. "We are not just taking my personal forces. I will mobilize the elites of the Zhan Clan. I will send word to the Li Clan to gather their finest as well. We will form an absolute perimeter around him."
She looked at Khaos. The ruthless blood soaked commander the universe feared had returned. The motherly sacrifice she had endured for years fueled her ferocity.
"To hell with the grand defensive lines," Zhan Tielan stated coldly. "To hell with everyone else in that zone. My husband and I have paid a great price for this universe. We gave up raising our own flesh and blood in the name of duty. This is where I draw the line. I do not care if every single soldier and commander we bring perishes in this. As long as Li Yu leaves that battlefield untouched, it will be worth the cost."
Khaos nodded. He understood the absolute finality in her tone. It was a terrifying resolve.
"It is the least we can do," Khaos agreed.
The promised day arrived in Silkwood. Li Yu stood in his quiet courtyard. He had checked his arrays, secured the brown gourd within his Koi Sanctuary and prepared his mind for the trial ahead. The air distorted near the wooden fence. Khaos and Lian stepped onto the grass.
"It is time," Khaos said.
Li Yu nodded. He stepped forward. Lian raised her hand and carved a path through reality. It was not a violent tear in space. It was a smooth and perfect tunnel through the fabric of the universe. Li Yu walked through it without hesitation.
He noted the stability immediately. During his past travels between realms the spatial tunnels were often turbulent, filled with chaotic currents that threatened to shred his body. This portal was completely calm. It was a flawless bridge.
Li Yu looked at Lian. He marveled at her strength. He firmly believed she was the one powering this journey due to her supreme cultivation base. He was traveling under the guise of Khaos's disciple, a title he believed was entirely accurate anyway.
They stepped out of the portal. Li Yu stopped breathing.
They were standing on the observation deck of a warship. The vessel was massive. It was the size of a continent, forged from dark metal and pulsing with intricate defensive arrays. But it was not alone.
Li Yu looked out into the void. The sheer scale of the gathered forces was mind boggling. It defied mortal comprehension. Space itself seemed crowded by the armada.
"These are my armies," Lian explained standing beside him. "They are broken into ten distinct fleets. Each fleet is commanded by one of my generals."
Li Yu saw the familiar figures of General Po, General Hua and General Sha standing on the command decks of nearby escort vessels. When Lian appeared on the flagship the generals turned and locked eyes with Li Yu. They offered crisp military salutes. The countless soldiers standing in strict formation behind them mirrored the gesture. The regular troops were not told the identity of the young man standing beside their leader. They simply saluted the guest of their supreme commander.
But Lian's ten fleets were only the center of the formation. Gathered here today was a good portion of the elites, all from apex factions in the universe. It was not their full combined military might but it was enough to shatter the heavens. Li Yu was not introduced to any of them in order to keep him away from everything.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
To the right of Lian's forces stood the personal armies of Zhan Tielan. The organization that she had built and commanded. They were a legion of battle hardened veterans radiating a uniform killing intent that made the void around them warp.
To the left was the Li Clan. They were the family of Li Yu's father. They were renowned across the stars for their boundless Qi reserves and their devastating Qi techniques. Their ships glowed with ethereal light. They were humming with concentrated elemental power.
Below them stood the Zhan Clan. The family of Li Yu's mother. They were a clan of body refining titans. Their warriors did not wear heavy armor. Their flesh alone possessed the density to shatter meteors and withstand cosmic fire.
Above them floated the forces of Khaos. They were cloaked in dark swirling void energy. They were silent, absolute in their discipline and terrifying to behold. Li Yu could vaguely sense that they were similar in nature to the group he had met in that realm.
His own theory that Khaos was a branch member of that clan was now changed that perhaps Khaos came from the main clan and the one he met was a branch family that had broken off. The forces here were much more terrifying.
Positioned at the very front and acting as the vanguard spearhead, was an unidentified force to everyone but the very top leaders of the other groups. This was the Leviathan Smashing Vanguard. Their ships were sleek, jagged and designed for pure suicidal offense.
Positioned at the very back, acting as the ultimate rearguard, was another unidentified force. This was the Golden Shell Phalanx. Their massive vessels shaped to look like turtle shells formed an impenetrable wall of overlapping defensive arrays.
Li Yu stood in the exact center of this cosmic formation. It was probably the safest spot in the entire universe at that moment. Each distinct force gathered around him possessed the power to end entire realms without breaking a sweat.
Li Yu did not know that. He could not sense the true depths of the auras surrounding him at all. He was simply too weak to comprehend the forces prepared for his protection and to break through. He felt like a speck of dust floating among giants.
He decided the smartest course of action was to follow Khaos's orders and stay right beside him the entire time. The operation was about to begin. The massive continental warships began to hum.
A figure descended from the void above and landed softly on the observation deck of the central flagship. Li Yu tensed but Khaos raised a hand to signal calm.
The figure was a woman. However her form was entirely blurred. A thick layer of dense laws distorted her appearance, making it impossible for Li Yu to see her face or sense her cultivation base. She was a walking distortion in reality.
Yet as she stepped closer, Li Yu felt a strange, inexplicable warmth in his chest. He felt a sense of familiarity with the blurred entity standing before him.
Zhan Tielan looked at her son. Her heart hammered against her ribs. She wanted to pull him into an embrace. She wanted to shatter the disguise and hold the boy she had left behind so many years ago. She restrained herself. The iron discipline of a supreme commander held her turbulent emotions in check.
"You are the disciple of Khaos?" Zhan Tielan asked.
Her voice was soft spoken. It was tender and gentle.
A few paces away on the adjacent ships, the generals of the Veiled Lotus exchanged subtle bewildered glances. They had fought alongside her before.. To the rest of the cosmos, Zhan Tielan was a demon woman.
She was a titan of war who crushed enemy fleets with her bare hands and roared orders over the din of battle. To hear her speak with such delicate and fragile warmth was a shock that rivaled the temporal trap itself.
"I am," Li Yu answered respectfully.
Zhan Tielan studied him. She looked at his posture, his bright eyes and the calm foundation of his Qi.
"You look like a fine young man," Zhan Tielan commented. Her blurred form shifted slightly. "Your foundation is incredibly strong. Khaos has a magnificent disciple."
Despite her best efforts, a heavy and undeniable sadness leaked into her voice on the final word. It was the crushing grief of a mother praising her own child through the mask of a stranger.
Li Yu heard the sadness. He did not understand the context but the strange familiarity tugged at his heart. He felt a genuine connection to this nameless faceless commander leading the charge into the abyss.
"Thank you senior," Li Yu said while offering a deep bow. He looked back up at the blurred figure. "I wish you luck. Please stay safe in the battle to come."
Zhan Tielan froze. The simple honest wish from her son struck her with the force of a collapsing star. She had been sent off to countless wars with cheers of glory and demands for absolute victory. This send off hit differently.
"Thank you," Zhan Tielan whispered. Her voice trembled just a fraction. She turned her head toward Khaos. The motherly tenderness vanished instantly and was replaced by the iron will of the general.
"Make sure you keep him safe," Zhan Tielan commanded.
"Of course," Khaos replied smoothly.
Zhan Tielan did not linger. She shot into the void and returned to her personal flagship on the right flank. The horns of war echoed across the dark expanse of space. The rescue operation was under way.
