Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 749: The River of Ash

Li Yu sat motionless in the quiet dark. He was currently in a self made cave that he had carved directly into the side of a small mountain range. The air was cool and smelled of damp earth and crushed stone.

It had been roughly a week since he officially began his solo travels through the insectoid realm. The first four days were spent simply walking. He had journeyed far away from the sprawling central capital of the Hive Empire and crossed the vast alien landscapes until he finally reached the desolate borderlands.

Just as he stepped past the official border markers he received a sudden calling from deep within his body.

It was a physical and spiritual heaviness that every cultivator recognized. His foundation was overflowing. The vast amount of accumulation had reached a critical tipping point. He felt the undeniable calling to settle down. It was time to advance.

He found this quiet mountain range and used his techniques to hollow out a secure cavern. He sealed the entrance with a heavy boulder, took over several array disks to conceal it and had been sitting here meditating for the last three days.

Just yesterday he had successfully stepped all the way into the fourth level of the Divine Transformation realm.

The breakthrough itself was a strange process. Before he began his deep meditation Li Yu had carefully laid out various treasures across the stone floor of the cave. He pulled glowing spirit stones, rare organic metals and vibrant spiritual herbs from the storage ring Xerxis had given him. He wanted to ensure he had an abundance of ambient Qi to support his advancement.

But his body did not absorb a single drop of the external treasures during his breakthrough.

When his Myriad Rivers Returning to the Sea Art activated his foundation completely ignored the wealth scattered on the floor. His Koi Soul turned its attention inward. It swam toward the massive structure resting in his inner world.

Floating there was the dense sphere of Qi and essence from before but it had now mixed and combined with the purple Qi and essence of the Xylarri that were slaughtered by the mountain that day. That sphere contained the raw essence and the fragmented souls of the Xylarri drones and thirty four leaders.

The Koi Soul opened its mouth and began drawing in a stream from the sphere. The energy that flooded Li Yu's meridians was violent and chaotic but his martial spirit easily filtered the malevolent intent. The raw power surged through his pathways and broke down his internal bottlenecks with terrifying ease. He crossed the threshold into the fourth level of Divine Transformation smoothly and without a physical injury.

However, the breakthrough was only the beginning.

Because he had utilized the essence of the Xylarri to fuel his advancement, his consciousness experienced a sudden shift. The Xylarri were a species that existed solely to consume and destroy. Their very existence was intertwined with the fundamental ending of things.

By absorbing their core essence his mind began to understand Destruction more clearly. After his breakthrough was completed, he was pulled directly into the Law River for Destruction.

That was exactly what he had been doing since his breakthrough yesterday. His physical body remained sitting in the dark cave while his consciousness wandered forward on this endless river. He was actively gaining insights on the true nature of destruction.

The sky above the river was currently a fractured mosaic of dying stars and collapsing galaxies. The sound of the river was the sound of mountains crumbling, steel shattering and dying breaths escaping tired lungs.

Li Yu walked upon the surface of the river. He looked down into the churning gray currents and observed the endless cycle of endings.

Before this moment, his understanding of destruction had been decent but relatively shallow. He used it to crush bones, shatter armor and obliterate physical forms. But as he walked further down the river and was guided by the lingering echoes of the Xylarri essence, he realized that explosive force was only the most crude and basic application of the law.

Destruction was vastly more complex. It was a multi faceted force of nature. He stopped walking and knelt down. He dipped his ethereal hand into the gray water. The first new insight flowed into his mind. Destruction was not always sudden. It was also a slow and inevitable decay. It was corrosion.

He saw a vision of a masterful steel sword left out in the rain. Over centuries the water and the air slowly ate away at the pristine metal. The steel rusted, flaked and eventually turned into brittle orange dust that blew away in the wind. The sword was destroyed just as thoroughly as if it had been smashed by a hammer but the process was quiet and insidious.

Li Yu realized he could apply this specific concept to his own combat techniques. He did not always need to overpower his enemy with a massive explosive strike. He could weave the concept of corrosion into his Qi. If he struck an enemy barrier, he could make their defensive energy rust and decay. He could cause their techniques to wither away into nothingness before they even reached him just like the Xylarri aura devoured the ambient space.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

He pulled his hand from the water and let it drip from his fingers. He took a few more steps down the river and dipped his hand in again. The second insight washed over him. Destruction was a purifying force. It was cleansing.

He saw a vision of a massive ancient forest that had become infected with a terrible and creeping blight. The trees were rotting from the inside out and the soil was turning toxic. Then a massive lightning strike ignited the dry wood. A raging inferno swept through the forest and was burning everything to the ground.

The fire was pure destruction but it was also a perfect cleansing. It burned away the diseased wood, the toxic soil and the creeping blight. It erased the flawed and the corrupted to leave only a blank slate.

Li Yu opened his eyes wider as the weight of the concept settled into his soul. Destruction could be used defensively. If he was afflicted by a dark curse or a foreign binding technique he could use the law of destruction on himself. He could selectively target the invading energy and burn it away. He could also use it to constantly cleansing his own meridians and purify his foundation.

He stood back up and looked out over the endless churning river. He saw the final truth of the law reflecting in the dying stars above. Destruction was the necessary precursor to creation.

He looked back at the vision of the burned forest. The massive trees were gone, reduced to nothing but a thick layer of gray ash. But as the seasons passed, the rain fell on the ash. The destroyed matter seeped into the earth and provided incredibly rich nutrients to the soil. Soon a tiny vibrant green sprout pushed its way through the gray dirt.

The destruction of the old forest directly fueled the creation of the new one. The end of one state of being was the exact starting point of another. They were two halves of the exact same cycle.

Li Yu thought about his own foundation. He possessed a mastery over the laws of Life as well. He had used it to heal his wounds and restore his vitality from time to time. He had always kept his understanding of Life and Destruction separated, viewing them as opposing forces. But now he saw the bridge between them.

You must destroy the old to make space for the new. Li Yu closed his eyes and pulled his consciousness away from the Law River. The sounds of dying stars and crumbling mountains faded away, replaced by the quiet stillness of his dark cave.

He opened his physical eyes. A faint gray and purple light flickered deep within his dark pupils before settling back into a calm black. He raised his right hand and actively began weaving these new philosophical concepts into his martial foundation. He wanted to upgrade his techniques.

He projected his soul domain outward. The opalescent ocean flooded the small cave and illuminated the rough stone walls with a gentle shifting light. The heavy spiritual Qi hovered in the air and perfectly reflected his internal Ocean of Qi.

Li Yu focused his mind and guided his new insights into the projected water.

He started with the concept of corrosion. He willed the opalescent water to carry the subtle insidious nature of decay. The spiritual water shifted slightly and took on a very faint grayish tint beneath the shifting colors.

He picked up a loose piece of hard stone from the cave floor and tossed it into the floating water.

He did not use the crushing gravity of the domain to break the rock. He simply let the water wash over it. As the opalescent fluid touched the stone, the stone began to hiss. The solid surface rapidly decayed, losing its structural integrity. Within three seconds the hard rock simply dissolved into a handful of loose sand that drifted downward.

Li Yu smiled faintly. The corrosion was highly effective. If an enemy cultivator stepped into his domain, their protective Qi arrays and their physical armor would rapidly rust and decay. They would have to actively fight the suppression of the soul domain as well as the decay. This should leave them highly vulnerable to his follow up strikes.

Next he focused on the concept of cleansing.

He drew a small amount of the purple Xylarri Qi from the sphere in his inner world. He carefully pushed the malevolent energy out through his fingertips and allowed it to coat his right hand. The purple aura immediately began to tear at his skin and was trying to rot his flesh.

Li Yu did not panic. He submerged his hand into his opalescent domain.

He willed the spiritual water to act as a purifying fire. He directed the destruction specifically at the foreign purple energy. The water swirled around his fingers and the gray undertones flared. The destruction law acted like a targeted eraser. It aggressively broke down the chaotic Xylarri Qi, tearing the malevolent intent apart without harming a single cell of Li Yu's actual skin.

The purple energy vanished and left his hand perfectly clean and undamaged.

It was a success. He now had the stepping stones to a viable way to purge his body without needing specialized medical pills. His soul domain was evolving from a simple zone that suppressed into a highly versatile multi functional tool. These were the beginning blocks and he would have to refine it over and over again.

He sat back down on the stone floor and let out a satisfied breath. The results were truly staggering. He was now a 4th level Divine Transformation cultivator with a much deeper understanding. He was learning how to manipulate with precision and intent.

He looked down at the glowing spirit stones and rare herbs still scattered across the cave floor. He waved his hand and swept them all back into his storage ring. He had not needed them this time but they were still highly valuable resources for trade or future use.

Li Yu stood up and stretched his arms as he was listening to his joints pop in the quiet cavern. His body felt incredibly light but his Qi felt impossibly dense and heavy.

He walked over to the massive boulder sealing the entrance of the cave. He placed his hand flat against the rough stone and channeled a tiny fraction of his new corrosion insight. The center of the boulder rapidly decayed and crumbled into fine dust. He pushed lightly and the rest of the rock shattered outward and was spilling into the mountain air.

Bright sunlight flooded into the dark cave.

Li Yu stepped out onto the mountain ledge and took a deep breath of the fresh air. He looked out over the sprawling valleys and the dense strange forests stretching out toward the horizon. He was currently standing in the more lawless but neutral zones between the great empires.

He had completed his advancement and solidified his new insights. There was nothing left for him to do in this quiet mountain range. It was time for him to resume his journey and see what kind of unique challenges the borders of the Ant Empire had to offer.
