Myriad Rivers to the Sea

Chapter 731: Sparks and Rejection

The grand heavy doors of the Patriarch's hall closed with a deep resonant thud. Li Yu and Garrick followed Muten down the sprawling corridors of the Void Shell Citadel. The young prodigy walked with his hands clasped loosely behind his back. The rigid tension that usually dictated his every movement was noticeably less.

Muten proved to be a surprisingly excellent host. It was clear after a bit that he had done this many times before. He led the two travelers through the colossal floating fortress and was pointing out the architectural marvels carved directly into the ancient petrified crab shell.

"The citadel is divided into four main districts," Muten explained as they walked across a massive stone bridge suspended over a swirling pool of purple void energy. "The outer rings are for the vanguard and the standing armies. The inner rings house our forges, our alchemy pavilions and the general populace of the clan. The central spire where my father and the elders reside is the absolute heart of our defenses."

Li Yu looked down over the edge of the bridge. The void energy swirling below illuminated the dark metallic walls with a beautiful haunting glow. He could feel the sheer density of the power radiating from the pool.

"It is an incredible place," Li Yu commented honestly. "Your clan has built a true marvel."

As they reached the other side of the bridge and entered a wide open courtyard filled with training disciples, a young woman suddenly stepped out from a branching corridor.

She wore fitted dark armor trimmed with elegant silver threads. She carried a sleek straight sword at her hip and moved with a fluid and absolute confidence. Her dark hair was tied back in a practical braid and her striking eyes possessed a sharp intelligent edge. As she walked past the training disciples, they all immediately stopped their drills and offered her deep respectful bows.

She was clearly someone of immense importance.

Li Yu looked at the young woman and completely stopped walking. A sudden powerful wave of familiarity washed over him. It was the exact same instinctual recognition he felt when he first saw Muten on the dirt road.

He stared at her and was trying to place her face within his memories. But just like with Muten he simply could not figure out why she felt so familiar. It was a lingering echo in his soul that completely defied explanation.

The young woman noticed the group and her sharp eyes immediately softened. She walked directly toward them and was completely ignoring the bowing disciples.

"I heard the carriage was sent ahead to the academy city." she said. Her voice was clear and melodic. She looked at Muten with a mixture of relief and subtle deep affection. "I was told you returned early alongside Elder Jaro and Elder Torin. Is everything alright?"

"Everything is perfectly fine." Muten answered, own voice losing its usual cold, authoritative edge. He offered her a warm smile instead.

Muten turned toward Li Yu and Garrick.

"Li Yu this is Kaia." Muten introduced her by gesturing with his hand. "She is a very special member of our family. My mother actually found her as an abandoned baby by chance during a border skirmish and took her in."

Kaia offered a polite bow to Li Yu and Garrick. Li Yu returned the bow and noted the immense respect she carried despite not sharing the core bloodline of the clan.

"She was originally trained to be my personal bodyguard," Muten continued, his voice laced with pride. "But she showed extraordinary skills and tactical aptitude that vastly exceeded such a position. So her path was changed. She is currently being trained to become a Special Elder."

Li Yu tilted his head curiously. "A Special Elder?"

"Since she is not of our direct blood, she cannot become a true elder of the inner court." Muten explained the clan politics smoothly. "A Special Elder is a title reserved only for non blood members who are deemed entirely worthy of leading our forces. She is already leading a vanguard group of five hundred elite warriors for the clan. She wages wars and commands battles in our name. She is treated with the exact same respect as any true elder."

Kaia smiled modestly and was shaking her head slightly. "You praise me too much. I simply do my duty to repay the kindness your mother and clan have shown me."

Li Yu watched the interaction between them and a knowing smile slowly crept onto his face. The subtle glances, the softening of their voices and the comfort they shared was entirely obvious. He instantly suspected that Kaia was the specific girl Muten had just argued with his father about. She was the one he truly wanted to be with.

Muten looked at Kaia and then looked at the bright heavy sky above the courtyard.

"Have you eaten your meal yet?" Muten asked her.

Kaia blinked in surprise. "No, I have not. I was just reviewing the latest border reports."

"Join us then." Muten offered, extending his hand slightly. "I am taking our guests to the eastern pavilion for food. I would like you to come with us."

Kaia stared at him for a long silent moment. The disciples in the courtyard who were secretly listening in also stared in shock. The greatest genius of the Void Shell Citadel was notoriously obsessed with his cultivation. He never took the time to have casual meals or socialize during the middle of the day.

A bright and beautiful smile broke across Kaia's face. "I would love to."

The group walked together toward the eastern edge of the central spire. They arrived at a stunning open air pavilion that hung over the side of the ancient crab shell and offered a breathtaking view of the heavy clouds and the sprawling lands below.

Servants quickly brought out a massive feast. There were plates of perfectly roasted spirit beasts, bowls of steaming fragrant rice and delicate pastries filled with sweet nectar.

They all sat around the circular stone table.

As Li Yu picked up his chopsticks, he suddenly froze. A heavy suffocating pressure slammed directly into his chest. It felt like an invisible hand was pressing against his very existence, trying to physically squeeze him out of the air.

He let out a sharp gasp and dropped his chopsticks.

Garrick grunted loudly next to him. The large man gripped the edge of the stone table and his metallic knuckles turned white.

"Are you two alright?" Kaia asked while leaning forward with immediate concern.

"We are fine," Li Yu managed to say as he took in a deep, struggling breath. The intense pressure slowly receded back to a dull ambient ache but it was significantly stronger than it had been yesterday.

Li Yu looked at Garrick. The Great Sage met his gaze with a deeply serious expression.

"The rejection force is getting stronger." Garrick muttered. "It is accelerating much faster than I initially calculated. The resistance is compounding. We absolutely do not have one month. At this rate we might only have a few days before we are violently ejected from this place."

Li Yu nodded slowly and was processing the terrible news. He had hoped to spend some time exploring this incredible realm and finding a proper way back to his original home. But the realm was actively pushing them out with increasing hostility. Their chaotic arrival was clearly a massive anomaly that the universe wanted to correct as quickly as possible.

Li Yu forced a bright smile onto his face and picked his chopsticks back up. He entirely refused to let the impending ejection ruin a good meal.

"Just a sudden cramp." Li Yu lied smoothly to Muten and Kaia. "The laws of this realm are still taking a toll on my body. Please let us eat."

The meal commenced and the atmosphere quickly shifted from concerning to incredibly warm.

Li Yu spent most of the meal quietly observing the two young prodigies. Muten and Kaia dominated the conversation. Kaia talked passionately about the new defensive formations her group was practicing. She described the tactical maneuvers with brilliant clarity and proved exactly why she was elevated to the rank of Special Elder.

Muten listened to her with rapt attention. He did not dismiss her ideas or interrupt her. He offered constructive thoughts and praised her tactical insight. In return Muten told her about his recent breakthrough.

"I actually took a nap," Muten admitted while looking slightly embarrassed. "On a dirt hill. Right in the middle of the day."

Kaia nearly dropped her tea cup. She looked at Li Yu and then back at Muten in disbelief.

"You slept?" Kaia asked as a bright laugh escaped her lips. "I have known you since we were children and I have never once seen you willingly close your eyes when there was daylight to burn. What possessed you to do such a thing?"

"He forced me to do it," Muten said, pointing a chopstick at Li Yu. "We made a wager and I lost. He forced me to completely stop cultivating and just lie in the grass. It was incredibly frustrating at first. But then the tension just vanished. I let go of the rigid control and the final piece of the Void laws simply fell perfectly into place."

Kaia looked at Li Yu with gratitude and surprise. Gratitude that Li Yu was able to force him into doing anything and surprise that he won a wager against him. "You achieved the impossible traveler. You made the most stubborn man in the cosmos actually relax. Our entire clan owes you a debt just for that."

"He just needed a push," Li Yu laughed it off.

The meal progressed and the sparks between Muten and Kaia became completely undeniable. As that was going on, Li Yu noticed a very specific subtle detail. Every single time the guards, the servants or the disciples addressed the young master they called him Muten. But Kaia never once used that name.

She navigated the entire flowing conversation without ever saying the word ‘Muten.’ When she asked him a direct question she simply said "What do you think?" or "How did you feel?" When she needed his attention she just looked directly into his eyes. She completely and entirely avoided using his name.

Li Yu chewed his food slowly and his mind began connecting the dots.

'Muten is definitely a fake name.' Li Yu commented internally and was confirming his earlier suspicions. 'It is just an alias. But for what reason, I do not know. Perhaps the heir of the Void Shell Citadel traveling openly draws too many assassins. Or perhaps he just wanted to attend the academy without the overwhelming burden of his clan title. Perhaps that’s just what he is called around strangers? I have no idea. Maybe I am wrong all together. Perhaps that is his real name and I am reading too much into the situation.'

Li Yu did not care about the real name anyways. He was just happy to see the young prodigy acting like a normal person who was deeply in love.

The meal was winding down and the sun was beginning to dip lower into the heavy sky. It was casting long beautiful shadows across the eastern pavilion. Muten was pouring Kaia another cup of warm tea and Li Yu was finishing his final pastry.

Suddenly, a massive and terrifying explosion of pure Qi erupted from the very center of the citadel.

The shockwave was absolutely immense. It tore through the air and shattered the calm afternoon in a fraction of a second. The stone table violently trembled and the purple void pools below the bridge surged upward in massive and erratic waves.

Li Yu and Garrick instantly jumped to their feet, their combat instincts taking over. Garrick summoned his massive spiked mace and Li Yu channeled his Void Qi, ready to defend against a massive siege.

But Muten and Kaia did not draw their weapons.

They stood up and were looking toward the central spire where Patriarch Karkin's private quarters were located. The dark sky above the spire was swirling with an unimaginably vast vortex of raw spiritual energy. The sheer density of the power was suffocating pressing down on the entire floating fortress.

Instead of fear, Muten's face was filled with stunned elation.

"He is breaking through!" Muten shouted over the roaring wind of the spiritual vortex.

Across the entire Void Shell Citadel, thousands of disciples, guards and elders poured out of the corridors and into the courtyards. They looked up at the central spire and a massive, unified cheer erupted from the fortress. The sound of their pure joy echoed across the realm.

Patriarch Karkin, the imposing ruler of the clan, was breaking through his current realm. He was stepping into a completely new tier of power.

Li Yu lowered his hands and stared at the massive swirling vortex of energy. He felt the terrifying pressure radiating from the Patriarch's quarters. It was a power that made the Demon Lords of his previous realm look like absolute children playing with wooden swords.

Li Yu smiled and was letting the violent wind whip his dark hair around his face. He was paying attention to what was happening because any breakthrough was a learning opportunity. He did not know exactly what caused the sudden massive breakthrough but he was happy for the Patriarch and for Muten. The clan was celebrating a monumental victory.

But as Li Yu stood in the cheering pavilion, the invisible hand pressed against his chest once more. The rejection force flared violently and deep within his foundation. The realm was pushing back against his presence and their time in this heavy ancient realm was rapidly running out.
