Chapter 719: It’s Never Easy
The sky was a chaotic tapestry of lightning, fire and toxic green acid. The ground shook continuously under the weight of the massive armies grinding against each other.
Sovereign Zylith and Aquila dominated the skies. They combined their understanding of lightning and wind laws to create massive localized hurricanes that swept up thousands of flying Hive demons and shredded them into pieces.
On the ground, Seraphis slithered alongside the marching demonic infantry. His hard scales deflected incoming acid blasts while his highly toxic breath melted the heavily armored beetle demons into bubbling pools of sludge. The Alliance was finally making good progress and pushing forward. They were closing the distance to the towering dimensional rift that tore the sky in half.
From the enemy camp appeared three towering figures. They were Demon Lord level commanders of the Hive Empire. The first was a massive bipedal rhinoceros beetle covered in dark purple armor plates. The second was a slender but towering praying mantis monstrosity with four arms. Each ending in vibrating scythes. The third was a grotesque bloated spider creature that floated above the ground on a cushion of dark toxic energy.
The three commanders let out a synchronized screech that shattered the surrounding rocks and instantly killed thousands of lower tier demons caught in the shockwave. They charged forward to break the Demonic Vanguard.
The Demon Lords and the Beast Kings operated with a unified efficiency.
Sovereign Ignis and Sovereign Malos immediately intercepted the massive armored beetle. Ignis unleashed a roaring river of white hot flames that instantly superheated the creature's thick purple carapace. As the armor glowed bright orange from the intense heat Malos stepped forward and swung his sword. He used his mastery of spatial laws to send a devastating cutting wave right through the superheated armor, bypassing the physical defense completely and severing the beast's vital organs.
High above the battlefield Zylith and Aquila engaged the four armed mantis. The mantis swung its vibrating scythes, creating vacuums in the air that deflected Zylith's purple lightning strikes. Aquila let out a piercing cry and dove from the storm clouds at intense speeds. He used his massive talons infused with wind laws to tear two of the scythe arms right off the monster's body. This left it wide open for Zylith to vaporize its head with a compressed spear of thunder.
Down on the scorched earth, Sovereign Morven Sovereign Rathor and Seraphis completely overwhelmed the floating spider monstrosity. Seraphis coiled his massive serpentine body around the beast and crushed its defensive energy. Rathor manipulated the blood within the spider, causing its internal pressure to skyrocket. Morven finished the brutal execution by leaping into the air and bringing his heavy trident down through the center of the creature, pinning it firmly to the ruined ground.
The three Hive commanders were dead within minutes. The combined might of five Demon Lords and two Beast Kings was simply too much for them to handle.
The Demonic Alliance cheered loudly. The path to the rift was completely wide open.
But the celebration was incredibly short lived. Above the battlefield appeared a towering figure but it was a man. No one knew when he had arrived which greatly alerted all of them. Morven narrowed his pale eyes and tightened his grip on his trident. He recognized the facial features from the intelligence reports provided by Sovereign Thorne before the old man lost his mind.
It was Lucien. The elder disciple. The betrayer of humanity.
However, Lucien no longer looked entirely human. He had clearly fused with a high tier entity from the Hive Empire or undergone a horrific mutation to adapt to their foreign laws. Thick, dark chitinous plates were grafted seamlessly into his pale skin. They covered his chest, arms and legs like natural armor. Four translucent insect-like wings twitched rapidly on his back. His eyes were entirely black and multifaceted, reflecting the carnage of the battlefield with terrifying coldness.
Lucien did not carry a weapon. He simply looked down at the massive unified army of the lower realm and smiled a grotesque and arrogant smile.
"You beasts actually managed to push this far." Lucien spoke, his voice echoing with a strange buzzing distortion. "I am genuinely impressed. But your little crusade ends exactly here."
Morven let out a furious roar. "You slaughtered your own people, you disgusting traitor! I will mount your mutated head on the walls of the Violet Deep!"
Morven, Seraphis and Rathor did not wait for the others. The three of them launched a coordinated assault directly at the hovering betrayer.
Morven thrust his trident forward, unleashing a massive crushing wave of deep ocean water. Seraphis opened his massive jaws and fired a concentrated beam of highly toxic poison meant to dissolve Lucien's chitinous armor. Rathor stood back and extended his pale hands. He was trying to manipulate the blood within Lucien's body to paralyze him from the inside out.
Lucien didn’t seem to notice. He casually raised his right hand. The chitinous plates on his arm shifted and expanded. He met Morven's heavy trident strike with his bare palm. The crushing weight of the ocean trench splashed harmlessly against Lucien's mutated skin without pushing him back a single inch.
With his left hand, Lucien swiped the air. A wave of dark demonic energy erupted from his fingertips, completely parting the beam of toxic poison fired by the Snake King. The poison rained down uselessly on the ash covered ground.
Rathor cursed loudly. He was pushing his blood laws to the absolute limit but Lucien's blood was completely alien. It was thick, corrosive and entirely unresponsive to the Blood Demon Lord's control.
"You rely too much on your crude tricks." Lucien mocked his voice buzzing loudly in their ears.
Lucien vanished. He did not use spatial manipulation. His physical speed was simply so absurdly high that the Demon Lords could not track his movement.
He reappeared directly beside Sovereign Rathor. The Blood Demon Lord gasped and tried to summon a defensive shield of crystallized blood. Lucien reached out and grabbed Rathor's right arm. With a brutal casual tug, Lucien completely ripped the arm out of its socket.
Rathor let out a bloodcurdling scream of agony. The physical strength required to instantly dismember a Demon Lord without using Qi was incomprehensible.
Rathor was incredibly paranoid and inherently cowardly by nature. He took one look at his severed arm dripping blood onto the ash and immediately abandoned the vanguard. He turned into a streak of red light and fled desperately toward the rear of the army, leaving his allies behind.
Lucien tossed the severed arm onto the ground and laughed. It was a harsh clicking sound. "One down. Your alliance is as fragile as glass."
Morven and Seraphis quickly backed away. They realized they were completely outmatched in close combat. Lucien was on another level.
Fortunately, the rest of the leadership finally arrived to help. Ignis, Malos, Zylith, and Aquila landed around Lucien. They had surrounded the betrayer entirely. Six supreme beings of the realm now had him trapped in the center of the ruined valley.

"You are a strong traitor." Ignis declared with her molten armor flaring with intense heat. "But you cannot fight all six of us at once."
Lucien looked at the surrounding Demon Lords and Beast Kings. He did not look worried in the slightest. He reached into the folds of his dark robes in an instant.
"I do not need to fight you in close combat," Lucien said softly. "My master was incredibly generous when he told me to hold the line. He gave me tools meant to conquer."
Lucien pulled out a glowing dark jade talisman. It pulsed with a terrifying authority that made the surrounding space tremble violently. He crushed the talisman in his mutated hand.
The sky above them literally tore open.
A devastating projection of a massive dark finger descended from the void. It was an attack carrying a tiny fraction of the Hive Emperor's personal power. The weight of the finger caused the ground to completely collapse before the attack even landed.
Morven and Seraphis were directly in the path of the descending finger.
Morven roared and channeled every single drop of his Qi. He summoned his ultimate defense, creating a dense dome of water Qi that could withstand the impact of a falling meteor. Seraphis coiled his gigantic serpentine body around Morven transforming his hard scales into an impenetrable physical fortress.
The dark finger struck the defensive dome.
There was no explosive sound. There was only the terrifying noise of structural failure. The dome instantly evaporated into mist. The hard scales of the Snake King shattered like cheap glass.
The attack completely overwhelmed their ultimate defenses in a fraction of a second. The residual force of the finger slammed into Morven and Seraphis, sending both of them flying backward like discarded toys. They crashed through several ruined mountain peaks miles away and were coughing up massive amounts of blood. They were now completely buried under tons of rubble.
Ignis and Malos watched in absolute horror as the two strongest defensive fighters in the alliance were casually swatted away. Lucien did not stop or give them time to think. While the finger came down he reached into his robes again and pulled out a small glowing red pearl with haste. The pearl was entirely unstable, vibrating with destructive energy.
"Let us see how much you care about your little armies," Lucien mocked, his multifaceted eyes gleaming with cruelty.
He tossed the red pearl high into the air and directly over the center of the massive Demonic Alliance that was still fighting. He clearly did not care about his own troops at all. The pearl began to expand. It rapidly glowed with white light as the detonation sequence began.
Ignis and Malos reacted entirely on pure instinct. If that pearl detonated it would instantly vaporize millions of their soldiers, completely ending the war in a single strike.
Ignis pushed her fire laws to the absolute breaking point. She flew directly under the expanding pearl and unleashed a massive reverse vortex of sovereign flames designed to absorb and suffocate the heat of the explosion. Malos flew above her and he used his spatial mastery to carve a massive localized box out of the void, attempting to completely seal the blast radius inside an isolated pocket of space.
They worked together flawlessly. Ignis compressed the thermal energy while Malos locked the physical shockwave inside the spatial box.
The pearl fully detonated.
Through the efforts of the two, the explosion was successfully mostly contained within the spatial box. This prevented the annihilation of the army below. However, the apocalyptic feedback of the contained blast was far too much for them to handle. The spatial box violently shattered.
The backlash struck Ignis and Malos directly. Both Demon Lords were blasted out of the sky. Ignis's molten armor completely cracked and faded into dull iron. Malos dropped his sword and tumbled helplessly through the air. They crashed heavily into the grey ash, completely injured and entirely drained of all their Qi. They had saved their armies but sacrificed their combat ability to do so.
Aquila saw an incredibly brief opening. Lucien was busy watching the explosion and his guard appeared to be completely lowered.
Aquila folded his massive wings and dove toward the betrayer at the speed of crackling lightning. His talons were aimed directly at Lucien's exposed neck, hoping to decapitate the human demon hybrid in a single flawless strike.
Lucien did not even look up. He casually reached into his robes for the final time and tossed a miniature bronze pagoda into the air. The moment the pagoda left his hand it expanded instantly. It turned into a towering nine story prison of dark metal. The heavy bronze doors at the base of the pagoda slammed open. A terrifying and irresistible suction force erupted from the darkness inside.
Aquila was flying far too fast to change his trajectory. He dove directly into the path of the suction force. The Falcon King shrieked in panic as his massive body was violently dragged toward the open doors. He flapped his wings desperately, trying to summon a hurricane to push himself away but the ancient artifact seemed to completely ignore his wind laws.
Aquila was sucked entirely into the dark pagoda. The heavy bronze doors instantly slammed shut, cutting off his screeching cry.
The pagoda crashed heavily into the scorched earth and embedded its deep foundation permanently into the rock. It hummed with a dark energy and had perfectly trapped the Beast King inside.
Lucien landed softly next to the pagoda. He reached out and tried to pick the artifact up to store it back in his robes. To his immense annoyance, the pagoda did not budge a single inch. He grunted and pulled with all of his mutated strength but the artifact was completely immovable.
It was the only piece of good news in the entire disastrous exchange. Lucien could not take the pagoda with him and he could not use it to trap anyone else. It was a single-use prison meant for exactly one high tier target.
Silence fell over the ruined valley.
In less than a few minutes, Lucien had completely dismantled the combined leadership of the realm. Rathor had fled. Morven and Seraphis were buried under mountains miles away. Ignis and Malos were severely injured and completely out of Qi. Aquila was permanently trapped in a bronze box.
Only Sovereign Zylith remained standing in the sky. The Lightning Demon Lord hovered in the air and her body was trembling as she looked down at the monstrous betrayer. She was completely uninjured but she was terrified.
Lucien looked up at her and crossed his chitinous arms.
"You can run away now." Lucien told her with his buzzing voice echoing across the quiet battlefield. "I have no desire to chase you down. My orders are simply to defend this perimeter. Take your broken armies and leave. We have already won. Once my Emperor fully stabilizes the rift and crosses over, your entire world will become a breeding ground."
Zylith gritted her teeth in humiliation. But she was not a fool. The leadership was completely broken. If she tried to fight Lucien alone, she would end up exactly like Rathor or Aquila.
Far in the distance, Morven suddenly erupted from the rubble of the shattered mountain. He was covered in his own blood and his heavy armor torn to shreds. He leaned heavily on his trident and looked across the battlefield. He was assessing the catastrophic damage.
Morven raised his free hand and channeled his voice across the entire demonic vanguard.
"Fall back!" Morven roared, his voice filled with bitter defeat. "Sound the retreat! All forces fall back immediately!"
The mournful war horns blew across the ruined domain. The Demonic Alliance slowly began to pull back and was abandoning the ground they had just bled so heavily to gain. The remaining Hive Empire forces did not pursue them. They simply held their positions around the towering rift. They were screeching in victory as the lower realm armies fled.
Hours later, the Alliance established a new temporary camp far away from the front lines.
The mood in the camp was incredibly grim. The medical tents were overflowing with wounded soldiers. In the center of the camp, the surviving leadership gathered in a quiet circle.
Sovereign Zylith stood silently with her arms crossed and her face pale. Ignis and Malos sat on the ground as they slowly circulated healing pills and spirit stones to recover their completely drained Qi.
Sovereign Morven, Sovereign Rathor and Seraphis the Snake King were in the worst condition by far.
Morven was sitting on a wooden crate and was breathing heavily as medics carefully wrapped the deep fractured wounds across his chest and back. The massive finger attack had nearly crushed his heart.
Seraphis had returned to his human form, a tall slender man with pale green skin. He was laying flat on a cot and was coughing up small amounts of blood. The hard scales along his spine had been completely shattered, leaving him temporarily paralyzed.
They sat in silence while listening to the groans of the dying army outside the tent. They had kicked an iron plate and its name was Lucien.
