Chapter 698: The Union of Fire and Tide
The morning of the grand wedding brought a rare and pristine clarity to the skies above The Eternal Crucible. The perpetual canopy of industrial smog and volcanic ash had been forcefully cleared away by Demon Lords. In its place, a breathtaking tapestry of crimson sunlight filtered through iridescent blue clouds and was casting a vibrant glow over the dark ironstone architecture.
Before the chaotic festivities of the day could officially begin, a quiet, intimate gathering took place within the warded confines of Li Yu’s guest pavilion.
The air in the courtyard was still, save for the gentle bubbling of a tea kettle over a fire. Malos stood beside the heavy stone table with his usual boisterous persona subdued by an almost nervous sincerity. Arranged across the smooth stone were the spoils he had personally selected from the eradicated Ironwood and Crow vaults.
"I know," Malos began as he was clearing his throat and looking at Lana and Tuwark. They stood opposite him. "I know that in the past, you have both preferred to forge your own paths. You have built your lives with your own hands. Without the shadow of my influence. But... the realm is unforgiving as the past month has violently reminded us. Please, view this not as a Sovereign's charity but as a father's investment in his children's safety."
Malos reached out and picked up the hammer. Beside it sat two spatial rings.
"For the forge," Malos said softly while holding the hammer out to his son. "It is a powerful artisan's tool that I claimed from Terris's private vault. It channels fire Qi flawlessly. To help you shape the future."
Tuwark stared at the hammer with his broad chest rising and falling heavily. For a Soul Formation blacksmith, holding a tool of such magnitude was akin to a mortal holding a piece of a fallen star. In the past, he might have rejected it out of stubborn pride. But now, he had watched his father go to war for them.
Tuwark reached out with both hands and accepted the heavy hammer. He gripped the handle and felt the incredible resonance of the tool immediately attune to his foundation.
"It is magnificent, Father," Tuwark rumbled with his voice thick with emotion. He looked up to Malos with a bright and earnest smile. "With this and the materials... my skill will break through to the next realm. I will forge wonders with it. Thank you."
Malos’s breath hitched as his shoulders visibly relaxed. He turned to his daughter and gestured to the remaining items on the table.
"For the ledger and the cauldron," Malos offered.
Lana scanned the rings and realized the wealth within them. It was enough capital to instantly elevate her merchant guild. It provided the rare ingredients she desperately needed to push her alchemy to its absolute limits. She didn't hesitate. She stepped forward and seamlessly swept the items into her own spatial ring.
"Thank you, Father." Lana said. She stepped around the table and wrapped her arms around Malos in a tight embrace. "Thank you, Father. I will use every ounce of this to grow stronger and grow my business. We both will."
Malos returned the embrace and buried his face in his daughter's shoulder. When he pulled back, the Lord of Foresight was absolutely beaming. The radiant joy on his face outshone the crimson sun rising over the capital. He had been permitted to provide for them.
Li Yu sat near the edge of the courtyard and was quietly sipping his spiced tea. He watched the family dynamic with a warm and satisfied smile. He had nearly died to secure this peace but seeing the pure elation on the ancient Demon Lord's face made the gamble entirely worth it.
"Well," Malos announced. "Now that the family treasury has been successfully distributed, I believe we have an empire to see forged. Tuwark, Lana, check your illusion artifacts. Today, you are simply humble friends of Li Yu as before."
"Lead the way, Brother Li Yu," Malos chuckled while adopting the title Sovereign Morven had bestowed upon the human..
The Eternal Crucible had been transformed into a breathtaking spectacle of unified elemental laws. The grand plaza, which only weeks ago had been a cratered, blood soaked warzone, was now completely smoothed over and paved. Running parallel through the massive expanse were newly carved canals. Half of the canals flowed with glowing magma from the deep earth, while the other half surged with luminescent blue water imported directly from the Violet Deep just for this day.
Banners of interwoven crimson and oceanic blue silk draped from every spire and watchtower. They were fluttering in a pleasant breeze. The air smelled of roasting exotic meats, burning incense and the smell of alcohol.
Thousands of guests filled the tiered seating that surrounded the plaza. There were allied sect masters from the outer rings, wealthy abyssal merchants draped in pearls and the surviving, battle hardened troops of both armies standing at strict attention along the perimeter.
Li Yu, Malos, Lana and Tuwark were escorted to the absolute front row of the VIP pavilion. A seating arrangement that drew countless curious and envious stares. To the uninformed masses, Li Yu was a human anomaly. A mid level cultivator who had somehow earned the title of Sovereign Morven's sworn brother. Now his friends were benefitting from his elevated status.
As they took their seats, the pre-ceremony mingling was already in full swing.
"Brother Li Yu!" A gruff and gravelly voice called out.
Li Yu turned to see General Karr approaching. The commander of the Ash Guards stood tall and his heavy armor polished to a mirror shine. He was holding two massive tankards of a special heated ale.
"General Karr," Li Yu greeted respectfully while standing to meet the demon. "It is good to see you on your feet. The healers did excellent work."
"Bah, the healers wanted me to rest for another month!" Karr scoffed as he handed one of the tankards to Li Yu.
"I told them I wasn't going to miss my Sovereign's union." Karr raised his tankard. "I heard what happened during the initial strike. You took that soul attack for us. You saved my men and allowed us to start the war on the right foot. The Ash Guards do not forget such things. To your health, human."
"To the victors," Li Yu deflected smoothly while clinking his tankard against the general's. He then took a sip of the searing and heavily spiced ale.
Nearby, Admiral Vark of the Violet Deep was seated heavily in a reinforced stone chair. He too had mostly recovered from being impaled. Since they were generals they had access to the best healing pills around. Despite his severe injuries during battle, Vark was loudly recounting his implosion of the avian commander to a group of captivated and wide eyed merchants. He occasionally pauses to wince and show off his injuries.

The scars of the war were visible everywhere. They were worn not with shame but as absolute badges of honor.
"Li Yu! Old Malos!"
A bright and commanding voice cut through the heavy laughter of the generals. Princess Asha strode into the VIP pavilion and was flanked by a squad of elite guards. The young princess was a vision of radiant health and currently dressed in a stunning gown that flowed like liquid fire.
But it wasn't just her health that had transformed; it was her presence. She held a leather bound ledger in her hands and her orange eyes sharp and focused.
"Asha," Lana smiled while stepping forward to meet her. "You look magnificent."
"And incredibly busy," Asha sighed dramatically but she was clearly thriving in the chaos. She tapped the ledger.
"The abyssal merchants tried to double the tariff on the deep sea leviathan meat for the banquet. They were claiming hazard pay for the recent war. But I used the logistical clauses you taught me, Lana! They folded instantly and we actually saved thirty percent on the original catering budget!"
Lana’s eyes crinkled with pride. "A flawless execution, Princess. Commerce truly is the sharpest blade."
"I learned from the best," Asha beamed while hugging Lana tightly before turning to Li Yu and Malos. "Mother and Sovereign Morven are nearly ready. Secure your seats. It is about to begin."
Asha hurried off to coordinate the final arrangements and was barking orders at a group of panicked servants with the seasoned authority of a veteran guild master. Other members of Ignis’s family had returned for the ceremony as well but were spread around in other areas. For one reason or another, they seemed to have avoided Li Yu as he had never met any of them.
A sudden and deafening silence fell over the grand plaza.
The heavy war drums of the Ash Guards began a slow, rhythmic and earth shaking beat. A moment later, they were joined by the haunting and deep resonance of massive conch shells blown by the Violet Deep tide callers. The two distinct sounds did not clash; they wove together into a powerful and harmonious anthem of supreme power.
At the far end of the plaza, the massive ironstone doors of the inner palace slowly ground open.
Sovereign Morven emerged first. The Lord of the Violet Deep wore regal, iridescent armor crafted from the scales of ancient leviathans. The finest of such were used for his armor this day. His newly regrown left arm rested easily at his side and he carried his towering trident in his right. He looked like the undisputed master of the crushing abyss. An apex predator of unparalleled lethality.
From the opposite side of the plaza, Sovereign Ignis stepped forward. The Sovereign of Flame did not wear armor. She wore a breathtaking, trailing gown of woven fire silk that shimmered with immense intensity but gave off no heat. As she walked, her newly regrown legs moved with grace and authority.
The crowd of thousands erupted into a deafening roar of reverence while bowing their heads as the two Demon Lords walked toward the center of the plaza. It was where the canals of magma and heavy water met in a massive, circular basin.
A marriage between Sovereigns was not bound by paper contracts or mortal vows. It was a visceral, foundational merging of laws. It was a treaty signed in the very fabric of reality. Ignis and Morven stepped up to the edge of the basin. They did not speak. They simply turned to face one another. The towering, pale scaled brute and the radiant, fiery queen.
Morven raised his right hand. He cleanly sliced the palm of his newly regrown left hand. A few drops of luminescent black blood fell from his grip.
Ignis mirrored the gesture. She pressed a finger to her own palm. Her skin parted to release drops of blood that burned with heat.
They held their bleeding hands over the basin and allowed the drops of blood to fall simultaneously into the center where the magma and the deep water collided. The reaction was instantaneous and awe inspiring.
Fire and acidic tide did not destroy each other. As the blood of the Sovereigns mixed with the elemental basin, a massive, towering pillar of harmonious, iridescent steam erupted into the sky. It shot upward for miles and was catching the crimson sunlight and scattering it into a breathtaking and localized aurora borealis that covered the entire capital.
The steam was thick with revitalizing spiritual Qi. As it washed over the crowds, the ambient energy of the city surged. Minor wounds healed, exhausted meridians were replenished and the very air felt vibrating with new life.
Morven reached out and his massive hand gently enveloping Ignis’s smaller one. They turned to face the cheering masses with their union complete. The Empire of Fire and Tide had officially been born. The act was more than just a visual spectacle. They had formed a blood and soul bond with one another through that act.
The solemnity of the ritual immediately gave way to a chaotic and lavish banquet. Massive tables carved from petrified wood were laden with roasted Leviathan flanks, spiced Fire drakes, and endless casks of potent, high tier spirit wines. The air was filled with raucous laughter, the clashing of tankards, cups and the booming boasts of generals recounting their kills from the recent and past wars.
As the evening deepened and the stars broke through the lingering steam aurora, Sovereign Morven stood up from his massive throne at the head table. He raised a chalice the size of a barrel and was signaling for silence. The plaza quieted with thousands of eyes turning to the Lord of the Violet Deep.
"We stand here today, unbroken!" Morven’s voice thundered as he began. It carried the crushing weight of the ocean. "We survived the cowardice of traitors and we crushed the vanguard of our enemies into the dust! To the Aegis of Flame! To the Violet Deep!"
"TO THE EMPIRE!" The gathered armies roared back while slamming their weapons against the ground or against other weapons in a deafening salute.
Morven lowered his chalice slightly and his pale eyes searched the VIP pavilion until they locked onto Li Yu.
"But an empire is not forged by strength alone," Morven continued, his voice dropping to a serious, resonant tone. "It is forged by loyalty. By those who stand in the breach when the sky falls. When the traitors unleashed a strike meant to wipe this city, it was not a Demon Lord who took the blow. It was a human."
The crowd murmured and countless eyes turned toward Li Yu. Li Yu on the other hand was surprised and wanted to shrink down to avoid being seen.
"He asks for no glory and he seeks no throne," Morven bellowed as he raised his chalice directly toward Li Yu. "But he has earned the protection of the Violet Deep and the Aegis of Flame! I raise my cup to the man whose shadow hides a leviathan's strength. To my sworn brother, Li Yu!"
Ignis stood up beside her husband and raised her own jade cup in silent agreement. General Karr, Admiral Vark and thousands of troops followed suit. They all raised their drinks to the sky.
"To Brother Li Yu!" The plaza cheered.
Li Yu sat in his chair and was feeling the crushing weight of thousands of eyes upon him. He offered a polite bow back to Morven and raised his own small cup of tea in return. Internally, he sighed. He preferred a low profile but having the public backing of the two most powerful entities in this world was a tactical advantage he could not deny.
As the cheers subsided and the banquet devolved back into joyous chaos, Malos leaned over and clinked his own cup against Li Yu’s.
"You are a legend now, my friend," Malos chuckled while his eyes crinkled with amusement. “I met you are a wanderer and now you are a sworn brother of a Demon Lord and an honored friend with what could possibly be the strongest faction in this world now.
"Mere chance and fate." Li Yu replied cheekily to Malos.
"Indeed it is." Malos laughed quietly. He looked at Li Yu. "What of the Sworn Brother of the Empire? Will you stay and enjoy the luxury of the inner palace?"
Li Yu looked out over the plaza. He saw the dancing flames, the flowing blue waters and the scars of a war that had almost claimed everything.
"No," Li Yu said as his gaze drifted toward the dark horizon beyond the capital's walls. "The food here is excellent but I find my feet getting restless. I will most likely head back on the road again."
The grand wedding raged on into the night. It was a beacon of life and power in the dark expanse of the realm.
