Chapter 693: Shattering of the Sky
The clash of eight supreme beings in a single airspace was a physical impossibility. The overwhelming density of their combined auras immediately began to tear at the foundational fabric of The Eternal Crucible. The dark ironstone buildings groaned and the protective arrays surrounding the city flickered violently. They threaten to collapse under the ambient pressure alone.
If they unleashed their full wrath here, there would be no city left to conquer or defend. It would simply be wiped from existence.
Sovereign Ignis was the first to act. She did not bother with words or grand declarations. She became a literal incarnation of world ending fire. She rocketed directly toward the Three Eyed Crow. Beast King Corva shrieked and her human form was enveloped in a blazing aura of crimson feathers as she met the Sovereign of Flame head on.
When the two women collided, there was no explosive shockwave. Instead, the extreme heat of their combined laws folded space inward. A swirling portal of molten orange and deep crimson tore open in the sky and the two Sovereigns dragged each other into a self contained Fire Realm. It would isolate their apocalyptic duel from the fragile mortal world below.
Sovereign Morven leveled his massive trident at Lord Jareth. The Lord of the Violet Deep roared with his voice carrying the crushing weight of the abyssal ocean. He surged forward, wrapped in a localized hurricane of acidic water. Jareth met the charge. His untamed hair whipping around him as his greatsword gathered the chaotic winds. The kinetic force of their clash propelled them both backward like twin comets. They then both shot far beyond the city limits and disappeared over the jagged horizon.
Malos, his black eyes devoid of their usual cheerful warmth, turned his gaze entirely to Sovereign Terris. The massive Lord of the Ironwood sneered while summoning a fortress of petrified earth around himself. But Malos did not strike the earth. He swung the bone hilted sword his son had forged. The blade sliced through the fabric of reality itself, opening a pitch black rift that led directly to the third layer of the Void.
"Let us see if you can root yourself in nothingness, Terris," Malos roared as his voice echoed from everywhere at once. The Demon Lord pulled Terris into the rift he had created. The rift snapped shut and left no trace of either being.
Only Thorne and Saintess Elara remained.
Thorne’s void-like presence expanded and completely eclipsed the golden light radiating from Elara’s form. The old farmer in the stained linen robes looked at the woman he had fought beside for centuries. His hollow eyes filled with an unspeakable sorrow.
"We will not unmake the home of millions for your hubris, Elara," Thorne commanded. His voice held the absolute authority of a Human Pillar. "Come."
The shadows swallowed them both. Not to be mistaken with the void. The crushing pressure holding the capital hostage vanished and the two saviors of humanity reappeared hundreds of miles away. They were now standing in the center of a desolate and petrified plain far removed from the city.
With the Sovereigns gone from the immediate airspace, the secondary war for The Eternal Crucible began.
The invading army, composed of thousands of elite troops, war beasts and heavily armored warships descended upon the city like a plague. But the capital was not defenseless. The survival of their command structure allowed for a coordinated counter attack.
The unwritten law of chaotic warfare immediately took hold. In battles of this scale, combatants naturally gravitated toward enemies of matching standing and power. To fight someone vastly weaker left one's own peers unchecked, inviting a slaughter that no army could afford.
General Karr of the Ash Guards locked eyes with an invading general. A towering demon whose flesh was entirely composed of shifting, molten rock. Karr drew his massive serrated blade. He ignited it with white hot ash and the two commanders began to clash. Their shockwaves were shattering the windows of the buildings below.
Admiral Vark of the Violet Deep was intercepting an avian commander from Beast King Corva’s forces. All across the sky and the edges of the city, defending generals matched themselves against the invading vanguard. It was a brutal spectacle. The demons relied heavily on their terrifying physical prowess, innate elemental dominance and treasures.
But the invading army also faced a different kind of threat. Thorne’s personal disciples were also present. They were also furious at the betrayal of their fellow Human Pillars and threw themselves into the fray. However, Elara and Joreth also had human disciples that followed them in their betrayal. Those human disciples tried their best to find one another to fight.
Unlike the demons, the human combatants manifested their Martial Spirits.
Above the eastern district, one of Thorne’s disciples summoned an ethereal silver wolf that howled. The howl froze the air around a squad of invading commanders. Another disciple manifested a floating armory of ethereal swords. It was raining blades down upon the enemy warships. The sky became a chaotic canvas of clashing laws, magical treasures and visceral violence.
Far from the noise of the city, the petrified ash plains were entirely silent. Thorne stood thirty paces away from Elara. The wind whipped at his simple linen robes but he remained perfectly still. Like a terrifying anchor of emptiness in the physical world.
Elara gripped her ornate brass lantern. The golden light it emitted was no longer steady; it flickered and sputtered. Her immaculate white robes were slightly singed at the edges and her breathing was noticeably shallow.
"Why, Elara?" Thorne asked once again. His voice cracked with a personal grief. "We swore an oath. We bled together to carve out a sanctuary for our people. How could you trade that dawn for this?"
Elara’s face, usually set in an expression of unsettling compassion, finally twisted into a mask of bitter exhaustion.
"You wouldn't understand, Thorne," Elara spat at him. Her melodic voice gained a harsh and resentful edge. "You were always too caring. Too selfless. You would gladly turn your own soul to ash if it meant warming a mortal's hearth for one more night. I am tired of pulling weeds in a garden that constantly tries to die. I refuse to carry the weight of an entire race anymore. Terris offered me a future where I do not have to burn myself alive to keep the darkness at bay."

"So you became the darkness," Thorne stated softly as he was shaking his head. "You allied with the very monsters we swore to hold back. You slaughtered the innocent to secure your own throne. There is no dawn for you anymore, Elara."
Elara’s eyes narrowed with venomous intent. "I do not need your forgiveness, old friend. I only need you to die."
Elara surged forward. She did not rely on physical strikes; she was a master of the soul. With a furious cry, she summoned her Martial Spirit.
The space behind her warped and a colossal, translucent entity manifested. It was The Weeping Oracle. A towering, multi armed woman with a blindfold over her eyes and heavy, ethereal chains binding her wrists. The Oracle let out a soundless scream and tears of liquid, golden black soul energy began to pour from beneath her blindfold. This was turning the very air toxic.
Elara thrust her lantern forward and commanded the Oracle to unleash a torrent of corrosive curses directly at Thorne. Thorne sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of the world.
He raised his weathered hands, and the void around him answered. Thorne was a master of Shadow and Metal laws. A unique combination that made his defenses absolute and his strikes inescapable.
Behind the old farmer, his own Martial Spirit rose from the earth.
It was The Obsidian Sentinel. A massive and featureless golem forged entirely from shifting, liquid shadow. It was bound together by thick chains of dark metal. The Sentinel did not roar. It stepped in front of Thorne and raised two metallic arms to form a shield.
The Weeping Oracle’s curses rained down upon the Sentinel. Normally, Elara’s soul strikes would have eaten through physical and magical barriers with ease. But she was severely weakened. Channeling the city wiping attack that Li Yu had absorbed had cost her half her Qi and placed a staggering strain on her spiritual foundation. Her curses lacked their lethal edge.
The golden black tears struck Thorne’s Martial Spirit and sizzled but the liquid shadows absorbed the impact while the metal chains hardened. They perfectly deflected the residual energy.
"Your light is dim, Elara," Thorne said calmly while stepping out from behind his Sentinel.
Thorne clapped his hands together. The shadows cast by the petrified rocks on the ash plain suddenly came to life. They stretched, elongated and physically solidified. They then transformed into razor sharp spikes of dark metal that erupted from the ground beneath Elara’s feet.
Elara gasped and was desperately leaping backward to avoid being impaled. She commanded the Weeping Oracle to sweep its chained arms and smash the metal spikes but Thorne gave her no room to breathe.
He pointed a single finger at her.
The metal spikes that the Oracle had shattered did not fall to the ground. They liquefied and turned back into pure shadow. They then immediately slithered up Elara’s legs like serpents. The moment the shadows wrapped around her pristine white robes, Thorne closed his fist.
The shadows instantly hardened back into heavy and unyielding dark iron.
Elara screamed as thick metal bands clamped violently around her ankles, her wrists and her throat. They were pinning her entirely to the petrified earth. The Weeping Oracle wavered and violently dispersed.
She struggled and was desperately trying to flare her remaining Qi to break the binds but Thorne’s metal laws were absolute. The iron chains fused with her meridians and instantly disabled the flow of her energy. They then moved to suppress her soul to the point of complete paralysis.
Thorne walked slowly toward his former friend as his face was an emotionless mask. He did not draw a weapon. He did not prepare a killing blow. He stood over the paralyzed Saintess and was looking down at the flickering brass lantern that had rolled from her grip.
"I am not going to kill you, Elara," Thorne said. "Not yet. You are going to tell me exactly how deep this rot goes. You are going to tell me every secret you and Jareth sold and every life you traded for your comfort. And then, you will face the judgment of the very people you betrayed."
The battle was a relatively straightforward battle for Thorne. Elara was already deeply drained but had no choice but to face him. Their plans had gone completely wrong once that soul attack had failed and Thorne showing up as well was unexpected.
Back in the heart of The Eternal Crucible, the sky and surrounding area was a scene of devastation, yet the command structures held firm.
After the Sovereigns had left Li Yu stopped playing dead. Since it seemed like Thorne was on their side, Li Yu would help fight off. Li Yu pushed a heavy slab of cracked ironstone off his chest and slowly sat up. He dusted off his robes and his eyes calmly assessing the sky above.
The sky was currently a chaotic tapestry of elemental explosions, flashing weapons and roaring beasts as the generals from both sides tore into each other. He was unharmed but he was undeniably annoyed. His peaceful caravan trip, his culinary experiments and the quiet card games had been violently interrupted.
Li Yu stepped out of the crater. He did not rush blindly into the fray to seek out an enemy general. He understood his strengths and he was still not a top fighter here. He would still need to pick his targets smartly and help out where needed.
Sentry Art.
The air beside Li Yu shimmered and a perfect, featureless clone stepped out of his body.
"Support the others," Li Yu commanded. The Sentry clone nodded silently and shot into the sky. It became a phantom on the battlefield, a support unit that helped.
When an Ash Guard commander found himself overwhelmed by the fiery breath of an invading war beast, the Sentry clone would defend or redirect. When a Violet Deep general was pushed back by a flurry of enemy techniques, the Sentry clone would appear above him. It would summon a swirling vortex of heavy water that caught and effortlessly deflected the projectiles.
With his clone managing the crowd control and saving the lives of the defending commanders, Li Yu began to take action as well. He ascended until he was hovering above the highest towers of the inner palace. He was looking down upon the sprawling and chaotic warzones that had leaked into the city itself.
Above Li Yu, the sky darkened. Not with clouds but with weapons. Dozens, then hundreds of hyper compressed spears of Qi manifested around him. They hummed with a destructive might and were vibrating with the crushing mass of the deep ocean.
Abyssal Javelins.
Li Yu’s eyes locked onto the largest concentrations of elite invading troops and the lesser commanders who were attempting to break through the city’s secondary arrays. He waved his hand downward.
The Abyssal Javelins rained from the sky like a localized meteor shower. They did not fly; they simply erased the distance between the sky and the ground.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The impacts were devastating. The heavy, dark spears pierced through the physical shields of the invading elite troops as if they were made of wet parchment. Wherever a javelin struck, the kinetic mass of the javelins instantly turned the targets into fine red mist, before vanishing completely.
Li Yu then quickly shifted his location with a void step. He kept moving and his hands continuously weaving new javelins. He had become an untouchable artillery battery of wrath. He was picking on the weak and dominating his bracket of the battlefield with overwhelming lethal efficiency. He felt no dishonor from it, only effectiveness.
The sky continued to burn from countless cultivators fighting. The generals continued to clash and The Eternal Crucible fought desperately for its survival.
