620. About knowledge, 4

(Rose)

We sailed across the Atlantic ocean in a far more peaceful manner as I would have thought.

As a child I pictured the crossing of this ocean as a deadly and long journey, played by deadly storms, crushing waves, ices and diseases. I wasn’t lucky enough to ever travel on any marvel of the Cunard or White Star.

But the legendary beast pulling our carriage is swimming so swiftly, there’s always a wind in our hair, over landscapes of sea so calm and still, we could still be less than a mile away from the shore.

The gods make things too easy.

The matter and importance of events is shifting along them.

The scales and concerns have to change, but it’s not easy.

I’ve always brought my human insight and values over events that are outside of such relevance. And that’s what it feels to be dropped in a new world suddenly.

As much as I love the world, sometimes I feel so estranged to it, and old, in the face of modern customs and concerns I can’t grasp easily.

My daughter who’s grown too fast has already a mind of her own, and powers I cannot control.

N – I love you mom.

R – I love you too sweet cheeks.

I keep playing with her cheeks eagerly. But I can tell she doesn’t behave like a baby or young child anymore.

And now that she has, albeit briefly, learnt how to use her bio-engineering powers her mother gave her, she’s fully grown.

I can tell she’s thinking a lot about it all, finding her way.

Things don’t evolve exactly in our time. They transform. In the blink of an eye. Everything changes.

Fully grown adults can be created and copied in a manner of mere days and few nights.

And gods can rise.

When my mind wanders back to times of the old world, I feel overwhelmed and melancholic in the present. Things were so much simpler back in the twentieth century.

How surreal, against this illusory remembrance of the past, everything has become.

But as long as I can hug my weird child, the melancholy from the ruptured times doesn’t last.

R – There is still so much I have to tell you. From the falls of Italy to the giant fruit pods of Anatolia.

N – Teach me more then. And do the thing tonight!

The thing.

My body builds its own artefacts of power now. I’m working on something so dire and faustian...

I keep the dangerous doors to power slightly stuck open in a corner of my mind. I let ambient T.I. fall into me, to channel it thus into specific corners where it accumulates.

They don’t crystallise in a single lump or object in my flesh, but these drops where my metabolism currently concentrates T.I. exist.

I’ve learnt to release that power in magic, through that powerful light mostly. It’s really covering the broadest spectrum of electromagnetic spectrum truly. From infrared to the most energetic frequency I can reach, it’s much wider than mere light. It burns bad and deep, and it can reach what’s not exactly made of normal baryons either, which is what matters to me.

I can’t exactly feel the precise amount of energy stored and accumulated that way in my blood or cells, but I can call upon it like any of them. It’s like pouring fluid from an invisible vial.

Nokaranlık has come to understand that I had begun accumulating power for a coming purpose, and far, far more than the mere sparks I can do to light a campfire.

I give her another light show at her request during the night. It’s not wasting that much of ammunition since I don’t focus on the highest frequencies but the visible ones.

I raise my hands, warmth grows in them and my will propagates.

Light springs out, illuminating the ocean and the sky as if day returned for a short while. Not exactly a firework yet, but still a good scatter of light.

But now with some ingenuity, throwing powders of various metals into the air I heavily ionize, I do make shoddy fireworks explode high above the waves.

It’s nothing as beautiful as the real things, but it does create bursts of colours into the sky, in an anarchic manner.

Nokaranlık is mesmerised. Even Blume and our dragon are.

For a few minutes, bizarre and simple shapes of lights and colours appear and briefly swim into the sky, scattering and vanishing.

Until my hands burn from the inside, and my hair starts turning white.

My light still bleaches me from within as I use it, because I don’t control it as well as I wish I would.

But I smile, along Nokarlık’s happiness.

~

Nokaranlık learns everything we can teach her about this ambiguous form of discreet or quantum energy we call T.I.

Water, eitr, for Blume. Magic, ichor, or shifted quantic field for me. Something hard to comprehend and explain in the same manner at both chemical and Angstrom scales.

And it’s likely non-existent beyond Earth’s surface in outer space, we theorize.

I tell her about Annie, somewhere in the northern frozen fields of Eurasia. The one guarding the doors to the source of all T.I. on Earth shut, until her family brings a long lasting solution to its menace behind. Because there’s still more to be released behind it would seem. Enough to cause another apocalypse most likely.

These doors should stay shut.

I tell Nokarlık about them. Because whatever comes in the next hundred years, I don’t want her to get entangled in wars over there without awareness. I don’t want her to be caught in a crossfire at all. But should it happen, it wouldn’t be without full knowledge of what’s rightful.

Rightful in my old eyes...

I teach her the virtue I saw in Annie, of refusing to grab a power offered to her, for a far greater good.

On the other end of the spectrum was Magenta, that would devour anything and everything it could, to grow endless, far beyond the needs to survive or even propagate. It was the extremity of what life can be, if not merely a thoughtless form of entropy.

N – And you?

R – I swim in between. Trying to lean on the good side, but often pulled into other necessities and desires.

Teaching virtue with honesty is hard. And who knows what she will make of it or even remember, in twenty or even ten years from now... All I can do is give her more, and hope she’ll be good.

~

Stuck on this small ship with nowhere to go, and not much else to do, Nok and I talk a lot about everything.

And she asks more and more subtle and intelligent questions. It’s pleasing.

The naïve mind of younger children that still have a world of conceptions to build in their mind, it’s now going distant behind. Nokaranlık knows now.

She has revealed or built good memory and intelligence. She already knows far more than I give her credit for, because of her real biological age.

She was born adult already, but also had a frame of mind able to learn lots and fast.

That’s how Nightmare works. Unbothered by the constricting rules of what growth and reproduction would be on her artworks, she likes to create individuals already fully grown and quickly able.

Like machines in a way. Very complex organic machines, but still mechanical automatons she designed as she envisioned, without the limitations that growth and reproduction would force onto the spectrum of her work. She bypasses them to give herself far more freedom and options in her artistic thirst.

Our work of art for beings-like-her. Her latest masterpiece. My only daughter.

And as a proud member of their kind, she doesn’t require to reproduce now, because she has the innate power to create life from almost nothing stored in her.

She still has that cute cheeky smile of an impish child though.

So I keep having a nibble or pinch of her cheeks now and then.

N – Stop! Mom!

She laughs as I tickle her, but now she’s outgrowing this too. Oh that is bittersweet to my heart.

She keeps growing. She keeps learning.

And so we sailed, at such high speed, day and night as the dragon needed little rest.

So fast, that we will reach the old world, well, old continents before a fortnight...

Our dragon seems able to feed and breathe through the sea water. Which Nokaranlık confirms to my surprise.

N – Only if it feels tired or hungry in spite of this would it need to rest and fish. It also sleeps in manners that let it continue to swim.

B – I heard of birds doing that... So?

N – It was Nightmare’s idea yes. It taught me some kinds of plasticity of the brains.

Nok is twitching her fingers as if she was holding something soft. She is shining, speaking of what she learnt.

I do see the dreadful hand of her creator in such science.

And it gives me the human worry of possible abuses of such powers.

But her smile and proud attitude isn’t gloating. It’s childish search for recognition from her mother still.

I let my feelings of pride, amazement and love push aside my worries of age and moral. I congratulate her and hug her tight, until she begs me to stop.

I am proud. And I will do all I can to incentive her to use that kind of powers for selfless goodness.

She can become anything... In more ways than one.
