Game of Dragonborn

Chapter 238 – The News Spread 02.

[Chapter Size: 2300 Words.]

Third Person POV.

King's Landing.

...

...

It was not only Baelish who had received information from the south in the Vale, but even the other lords of the Vale were reading the news of the past moons.

"What do you think of this, father?" the young Royce, Andar Royce, eldest son of Yohn Royce, asked his father, the Lord of Runestone.

"I do not know. We are standing here in the Vale, since the beginning of all the turmoil that has been happening in Westeros after the king's death," said Lord Yohn Royce.

And his son could see the frustrated look on his father's face... ever since Daemon Arryn had been killed. Lady Lysa Arryn was ruling as Lady of the Vale, since her son was a child to take on the responsibilities of the Lord of the Vale — a fragile child, who even managed to surprise everyone when Lysa said she would attend that tournament together with little Rob.

Westeros had been undergoing great changes in the past year, and the Vale had made no move. The Vale, which should always be positioned in political matters and in the changes of Westeros, was, for the first time since the unification of the Seven Kingdoms, standing with its arms crossed. And that was far too shameful for a Royce, as well as for many other lords who shared that same thought.

The Baratheons had lost the throne to the Lannisters, and now the Lannisters were about to fall, according to the letter, if they had not already fallen this very day.

They only received the news. The North had been conquered by the man who killed King Robert. Lord Stark had knelt along with all the northerners who were still alive after the war in the south. They conquered Pyke, executing Balon Greyjoy and sending thousands of prisoners to the Wall. They conquered the Riverlands and made Brynden Tully the lord of the realm.

The army split and conquered Casterly Rock. The last news spoke of them preparing to attack King's Landing, with a huge army behind the gates.

"And we, in all this, are playing at tournaments while our lady forces us to remain inside our castles, doing nothing. This will turn against us, and it will be a mistake," he said at last.

"Father, Lady Lysa listens too much to that Petyr Baelish! Ever since he arrived, he has been the voice whispering in her ear. We have heard that he betrayed Lord Stark and that this Daemon Targaryen wants to kill him. She insists that he must not be touched!"

"I know, and the rumor. But we cannot do anything, not now. And the war in the south is far from over. After all, it is not only King's Landing that they must conquer. There is that other Aegon Targaryen with three dragons."

"But, as you said, we will pay for this either way. We will be called cowards. The Vale never—"

"Enough. There is no use wanting to argue about this. Things are as they are. We only have to obey our lords," he said, while his son nodded, despite his reluctance.

Yohn knew that his son was right, but there was nothing to be done. They could only kneel to whoever came to claim the Vale. Or, if Lysa continued mad in the head, making them all pay — whether by an ice dragon or by three fire-breathing dragons.

He and his son went to the area where the tournament was taking place. Most of the stands had already been arranged. Several lords of the Vale were there, and the favorite was known as Harrold Hardyng, the heir, being next in the line of succession after Robert Arryn, Lysa's son.

Lady Arryn openly despised him. Everyone knew that she saw him as a threat. Many lords of the Vale were turning more toward him than toward her son, which she found unforgivable.

But she could not deny the fact that, on that day, he was the favorite of the tournament in everyone's eyes.

Yohn Royce saw his son and soon parted from him to join the other knights who were preparing for the joust. He went to his place while watching the seat of honor being occupied by Lady Arryn together with her son, who seemed to scream the entire time, Rob. He saw Petyr Baelish approaching and sitting beside her, a very improper behavior toward a single widow. But Lysa did not seem to care. In fact, she displayed certain suggestive expressions toward Petyr Baelish.

Beside Baelish sat his bastard daughter, Alayne Stone.

Yohn had always found that girl strange and had certain suspicions. The blue eyes were unmistakable, and, given the coincidence of Sansa Stark being missing, the young man could not help but notice certain features in the girl. She simply did not have her mother's red hair. There was no doubt.

The question was: what did Petyr Baelish plan with the girl? Because he would certainly use her to try to save himself from retaliation by both Daemon and Lord Stark, who would not remain idle. The question was what he and the other lords should do. This involved even greater danger for the Vale.

And the madness of their lady was already known.

The tournament began soon after. Yohn, Lysa Arryn, Petyr Baelish, and Sansa Stark in disguise began to watch the competitors. When Harrold Hardyng entered, he was more applauded than any other, and even Sansa seemed charmed by him — even more so when he personally asked for her favor, and she granted it.

While the tournament continued in the Vale, Winterfell had also become aware of the events, but in a very different way from the others. They did not need ravens, and even if a raven arrived at Winterfell, it would take some time after the others had already received the news.

But, with Bran as the warg who could enter the mind of the bird he had left with his father and brother, the principal members of Winterfell already knew by the end of the day that King's Landing had been conquered.

Daenerys woke in a good mood, clinging to Ghost, lying in her chamber.

"If Daemon were here right now, I would ask him to take me to King's Landing!", she murmured, rubbing the fur on Ghost's head against her face.

The direwolf only made a soft sound, almost inaudible, like a small whimper.

"I know, I know. But I wish Daemon would come get me. I am eager to see King's Landing. Finally... it is where my family grew up," she murmured softly.

But soon her eyes closed, and she shook her head. "Not yet. Daemon would never allow me to go to King's Landing. Not now. There is still the Blackfyre in the south."

Daenerys knew that Daemon was watching that Blackfyre all the time. According to Bran, he could sense it better than the people around Daemon. Even Val did not notice it, but Daemon was always searching for any movement from the enemy dragons. He was prepared to act the moment any of those dragons made a move, whether to attack the army coming from the West or even to attack Winterfell. He was keeping constant watch.

Daenerys rose, and Ghost did the same. She merely adjusted her dress to face another day in Winterfell and stepped out, with Ser Barristan waiting for her outside.

"Good morning, my queen," he said.

"Good morning, Ser," she greeted, heading toward the kitchen.

"You seem quite animated today," he could not help but notice.

"I am simply happy. And you already imagine the reason," she said, pleased.

He nodded. "Soon you will be walking through the Red Keep, my queen, with your mother's crown upon your head." She smiled at hearing that.

Before reaching the kitchen, Ghost darted outside, running toward the wolfswood with his pack, while the servants and soldiers greeted Daenerys as she entered.

She went to the main table, together with the Stark children who were arriving as well. Lucis was speaking with Bran, wanting to know about her younger brother.

"Is he well? You said you would look at him for me yesterday," she asked.

"Yes, he is well. I heard them speak of him having managed to kill someone," Bran told Lucis.

Lucis nodded, and Daenerys saw Bran turning his attention to the side, as he greeted the girl seated beside him, Meera Reed. The Reed siblings remained in Winterfell, but it was clear that those two were spending more time together than necessary.

It was admirable that Bran, despite already taking on duties as Lord of Winterfell, still had time for the girl he clearly liked.

Daenerys would not mind having that couple at the Red Keep in the future as well, since Daemon had said he planned to bring Bran to the council.

"Good morning, everyone. So, any news from King's Landing?" Daenerys asked as soon as she reached her chair.

Bran, who greeted them like everyone else, lowering his head.

Arya pricked up her ears nearby, being by far the most enthusiastic about the events that were happening, shouting and asking for information all the time after she learned that Daemon, her father, and her brother were going to attack King's Landing the day before.

"Everything is under control in King's Landing for now. They are already preparing to execute the Lannisters. Daemon will pass sentence in the next few hours."

"Good. Let them all be destroyed," Arya said with satisfaction.

"I think you should not celebrate people's deaths so openly," Bran murmured.

"Those idiots did so many stupid things, they deserve all of this!" Lyanna, like a ghost there, seemed to be on Arya's side.

Arya smiled at the invisible ghost. "They are Lannisters. I do not care if they are destroyed, as Daemon claims they will be!" she said.

Daenerys saw Rickon and Shireen entering the hall as well. She could not help but turn her thoughts back to the south while eating her first meal of the day beside Lucis, waiting to see what would happen with Daemon, with Bran passing along everything that was occurring in real time.

At the same time, south of King's Landing, in the Stormlands, at Storm's End, the advisers of Aegon 'Targaryen' were not at all pleased with the news. They did not yet know exactly what had happened in King's Landing, since it took two or three days for a raven to arrive, but they already presumed that King's Landing must have been lost by that moment.

Varys was thoughtful. He no longer wore his usual neutral smile. He seemed to be reflecting on how to proceed in that game.

"That damned bastard. If he has taken King's Landing, I will behead him," Jon Connington growled.

"You speak as if it were easy. And the fault is ours. We are delaying too much. We have not even managed to raise our army yet. Aegon in the Reach suffered a horrible defeat. We are here waiting for the Martell army and the Reach's to join us," said Harry Strickland, the commander of the Golden Company.

"But it was Aegon who was supposed to avenge the Lannisters before the Seven Kingdoms! He was the one who should seek vengeance for his sister and his mother who were killed, and not that bastard from the North! This is bad for Daemon and his legitimacy," Jon kept shouting.

"I know. If he still had the dragon he lost, he could simply take the other two and finish our enemy in King's Landing," said another commander.

"That damned Euron Greyjoy! All his fault as well, how dare he steal the king's dragon with some kind of magic?" Jon kept growling like a dog in a fit of rage. The latest news had left him quite furious, and he continued snarling in every direction.

"I think we should calm tempers a little, my lords," Varys said for the first time. Even Randyll Tarly was with them at that meeting.

"It is very likely that King's Landing has already fallen by now, but not everything is lost yet. They may have a huge army and one dragon and more than a hundred thousand soldiers, but we have that as well — and a little more. Believe in Aegon. He may have lost one dragon, but he returned alive and still has two of them. Euron Greyjoy will be dealt with later. For now, we must focus on fighting Daemon to the north of here."

"Fine words, Varys. Not even I knew you could be so encouraging," Harry Strickland murmured among them, with a satisfied nod.

"I am only trying to find clarity in the midst of so much confusion, my lord."

"What he says is true. Let us wait for Daemon to arrive and also wait for the news to finally reach us. Then we will decide what to do. In any case, our enemy is to the north, and we will deal with the stolen dragon later. Euron Greyjoy will pay for what he has done," Harry Strickland said.

Even Jon seemed to calm down and nodded at that. They had to wait; they had great names to add to that council, and once they arrived, they would have a clearer conversation about what would happen.

But in the meantime, they continued the meeting, waiting for Aegon and the news from the north.
