Chapter 569 - 345: The Onlooker Sees Clearly
"Big brother, you guys are overthinking it. She’s only thirteen, why think about so many things? Just focus on studying. At such a young age, what else is there to do but study?"
Xiaomi yawned, rubbing her eyes as she walked in from the doorway, startling the two people inside.
"Xiaomi? When did you come in? Weren’t you supposed to be asleep?"
They were talking in the main room, just situated so they could see in the direction of the kitchen. If anyone else came by, they would have seen it clearly and either stopped talking or changed the topic.
But they never expected Xiaomi didn’t actually go to sleep, and she even looked like she’d heard everything!
Xiaomi plopped down on a chair next to them, then grabbed her big brother’s tea and downed it in one gulp, finally feeling a bit better.
"I took a shower and got really hungry. I haven’t eaten since last night, couldn’t sleep."
"What? Why didn’t you say earlier? Wait a bit, I’ll go get you something from the kitchen."
Saying that, Jiang Yu hurried out and quickly returned with some red bean paste buns left over from the morning and a bowl of hot water.
"Hurry up and eat. You just drank a bowl of tea, aren’t you afraid of feeling uncomfortable on an empty stomach?"
Not until Xiaomi had eaten two buns did Jiang Yu remember the main issue.
"Oh right, how much did you hear of what I was saying with Liu Ze just now?"
Xiaomi, now feeling much better and more energized, laughed playfully at them: "Big brother, are you worried I’ll spill the beans about Liu Ze having a crush on our second sister?"
"Xiaomi." Liu Ze hurriedly called out to her, nervously.
Xiaomi shrugged: "Seriously, it’s not a bad thing. I don’t know what you guys are so worried about."
Just as she finished speaking, she got tapped on the head.
It could only have been Jiang Yu; there was no one else here.
"What do you know? Your second sister is still so young, not even twelve yet. Do you think mom and dad would actually be willing to marry her off so early?"
If mom and dad got wind of this, they’d probably start imposing some restrictions on the two of them just to avoid any gossip.
He was quite satisfied with Liu Ze as a prospective brother-in-law and thought it wouldn’t hurt for them to foster some feelings while they’re both still young, without anyone talking behind their backs.
Just worried mom and dad wouldn’t see it that way.
Xiaomi pouted: "I think you guys have studied yourselves silly. You don’t need to get married; you can just get engaged. Once they’re betrothed, they can be together openly every day with a legitimate status."
"Besides, you’re all saying second sister is young, but she’s soon to be twelve. In the village, she’s already eligible for matchmaking. What if someone comes to propose to our parents for her and they’re okay with the conditions? What then?"
Xiaomi wasn’t just making this up. In the village, it’s normal for girls to be engaged at twelve or thirteen and married by fourteen or fifteen!
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yu was okay, but Liu Ze was outright shocked.
He slapped the table and stood up suddenly: "No way!"
That serious expression startled the siblings, and Jiang Yu quickly pulled him back to sit down.
"Don’t worry, don’t worry. Our parents aren’t that old-fashioned. How could Xiaoxue just get randomly married off? Even if someone did propose, Xiaoxue would certainly have to agree first."
Xiaomi, too, was so scared that her drowsiness escaped her. Normally, Liu Ze was mild-mannered, more than worthy of the description of a gentleman.
His sudden burst indeed gave them quite a scare.
"Ahem, Liu Ze, I was just saying casually. Don’t worry, we’re all out here now. Even if someone wants to propose to second sister, it’ll have to wait until we’ve returned after the new year."
"You’re still talking!" Another tap on her head, and Jiang Yu gave his sister who was stirring the pot an annoyed look.
"Liu Ze isn’t in the best health; don’t scare him into a fit."
Xiaomi clicked her tongue: "No way, Liu Ze just has a sensitive stomach and can’t digest regular food. How would he be scared out of his wits?"
"You’re still talking!"
Xiaomi quickly ran a hand across her lips, miming a zipping motion to indicate she wouldn’t talk anymore.
But the siblings’ little back-and-forth did manage to calm Liu Ze down, and as he sat back down, he smiled wryly: "Xiaomi’s right. I got too anxious, making a fool of myself."
Jiang Yu quickly reassured him that it didn’t matter, but the next second, Liu Ze stood up again.
"Now that the results are out, I should write a letter home about this. You guys keep chatting; I’ll go write the letter."
