Chapter 587 - 27: The Cannon Fodder Daughter and Her Cannon Fodder Dad (Part 27)
"I guess, maybe it’s Director Gao from the street committee. Remember he came over to stick up for Shen Yan a few days ago?"
Everyone thought it made sense and nodded in agreement.
"I think so too. Tsk, tsk, tsk, that Old Gao with his chubby face is far worse than Jiang Hai! Shen Yan really isn’t picky."
"Shen Yan only has a decent face, and her niece is just like her, a face like a vixen! Otherwise, why would Jiang Hai be interested in her, someone from the countryside?"
The aunts were gossiping heatedly.
As the sky gradually darkened, they were still chatting.
"What are you aunts gossiping about?"
The moment the aunts heard this, they immediately fell silent, each awkwardly smiling and chuckling.
"Nothing, nothing. How come you walk without making a sound, girl?"
Jiang Lai’s cheerful demeanor put them at ease, ensuring she hadn’t overheard anything.
"It’s getting late. I should be heading back to sleep."
Seeing they were about to disperse, Jiang Lai suddenly asked in puzzlement and surprise.
"Aunties, did any of you hear some strange noise?"
"Strange noise? What noise?"
Jiang Lai pointed to the wall in the backyard, listened carefully, and then nodded.
"There is indeed a sound, something strange. I’ve never heard it before. You should listen carefully."
Being a famed little gossip group on the street, they immediately sensed something unusual and their expressions changed at once.
One of them went straight to the base of the wall, pressed her ear against it, listening intently, as a glint of excitement flashed in her eyes.
Jiang Lai curiously asked from the side.
"Auntie, what exactly is that noise? It seems to be just behind here."
The eldest among them gave a look and then whispered to Jiang Lai.
"Kids just don’t understand. You should go home and sleep. Ask your mom another day."
Jiang Lai scratched her head.
"Why ask her? Can’t you just tell me? Otherwise, I’ll just go take a look myself."
"Oh, you little girl, where does all your curiosity come from? You’ll regret it if you see something you shouldn’t! Listen to your auntie and go back to sleep."
Jiang Lai nodded.
"Alright."
Shortly after she left, Little Buding laughed and said.
"A few of them sneaked out with kerosene lamps."
Jiang Lai smiled, yawned, and continued walking.
"Hey, aren’t you going to take a look? Aren’t you interested in a good show?"
"What’s there to see? It’s not like I haven’t seen it before."
Did they really think she was from this era, having never seen the world? What big storms hasn’t she seen? Why would she be curious to see two young people snuggling in a corner?
As long as she led those few over there, her goal was achieved.
In these conservative times, everyone treated such matters with deep embarrassment. Boys at least could gather some related information, but girls were completely naive before marriage, knowing nothing of the sort.
That’s why those aunts kept urging Jiang Lai to leave, worried she’d be led astray.
Back in the house, Shen Yaoyao had already returned and was sitting in front of the mirror combing her hair.
The room was filled with the scent of shampoo, a whole jar of cold cream was placed on the table in front of her, and all the different scents mixed together, making it hard to ignore.
Seeing Jiang Lai return, Shen Yaoyao turned around and smiled at her.
"Jiang Lai, little sister, I’m staying here for a few days. You don’t mind, do you?"
Jiang Hai had already kicked them out, and both Shen Yan and Shen Ping had been sent to the backyard. But Shen Yaoyao, being a young lady, planned to continue living here. Even if Jiang Hai saw it, he’d be embarrassed to say anything.
So, Shen Yaoyao would frequently ask Jiang Lai this question.
Previously, Jiang Lai’s response was always that she was too embarrassed to make her leave if she wanted to stay.
But now, since Shen Yaoyao had already assumed she wouldn’t be evicted, Jiang Lai wouldn’t let things go her way.
"Of course I mind. Actually, I’ve always minded, but you shamelessly refused to leave, so I was too embarrassed to kick you out. I was counting on you to be considerate and move on your own, but it seems I’m never going to see that day.
So, please move out tomorrow, to the backyard, and live with your aunt."
Shen Yaoyao’s expression changed instantly, clutching the cold cream tightly in her hand.
She didn’t expect Jiang Lai to be so blunt in kicking her out!
There’s only one room in the backyard. With Shen Yan’s preference for sons over daughters, how could she possibly give her a comfortable place to live?
"Jiang Lai, little sister, I know you’re still angry about what happened before. I apologize on behalf of my aunt for what she did, and I’ll give you this cold cream. Please don’t be angry, okay?
After all, we’re family. We’ve been living together for so long, I can’t believe you really want to kick me out."
"I do."
Jiang Lai looked at her, without an ounce of mercy.
"I really want you to go. As for this cold cream, give it to your aunt. Her face has been streaked with tears lately and could use this fancy stuff."
After saying this, Jiang Lai thought for a moment and continued.
"You can stay if you wish, but if that’s the case, I’ll have to go talk to folks at the steel mill’s canteen."
"Jiang Lai, you’re really taking this too far. I never thought you’d be so cold-blooded, to the point of driving your own relatives away!"
Jiang Lai chuckled.
"Next time you speak like that, take a look at the clothes in your closet. They were all bought with my dad’s wages. I’m embarrassed for you when you say such things. If you keep talking, I’ll have to calculate all the food and drink you’ve freeloaded off our family over the years.
Anyway, you’re living so well now, surely there’s no problem in giving a little something back to my dad.
As you yourself said, we’re all family. If that’s the case, it’s disgraceful to earn money and spend it only on yourself, like shampoo and cold cream, without showing anything to the family that raised you. If word got out, you’d be called a thankless snake.
Isn’t that right, thankless snake?"
Shen Yaoyao had no words against this onslaught. Though it was true, she still felt endless humiliation and grievance. Tears swirled in her eyes, offended veins bulged on her neck.
She glared at Jiang Lai, finally forcing out a sentence.
"Fine, don’t you just want me to leave? I’ll leave, I’ll leave right now, alright!"
Jiang Lai clapped her hands.
"Alright then, leave now. The backyard is not that far."
Jiang Lai immediately pushed open the door and shouted outside.
"Jiang Li! Come over!"
Jiang Li, just home, ran over immediately at the commotion, as obedient as a dog.
"Help Sister Yao Yao pack her things; she’s off to share joys and sorrows with her aunt, hurry up, don’t delay my rest."
"Okay."
Jiang Li didn’t hesitate, going straight over.
"Sister Yao Yao, if anything needs carrying, leave it to me, don’t be shy."
Shen Yaoyao gritted her teeth, glaring at the sibling pair, her face flushed.
By now, how could she not move out!
